My god, easily the best hockey series I've EVER seen, NHL playoffs included. The physicality by both teams and the goaltending by Richter was simply incredible.

@@veronicabellucci7129 I still remember being glued to the TV in the bars and at home. Documentaries about the tournament like to say nobody gave a shit and didn't watch it, but that wasn't the case at all in Minnesota. Non hockey fans were even heavily invested in it. Sometimes in those tournaments you don't always get 100% effort. That series against Canada was an absolute war between some of the best players on the planet. Bill Guerin said that series had everything - extremely dirty plays, off the charts skill and physicality, pride, pressure, and suspense. I really wish they could put together something that intense again. To think we've never seen a USA/Canada series where Matthews and McDavid face each other is criminal.

That second goal wasnt his fault at all either, nothing he could do redefelcted and he couldnt even see the redeflection.. but besides that to go against all those legends and only give up one other goal is unreal.. Absolutely amazing by Richter

John Leclair was such a beast in front of the net. He just absolutely manhandled Stevens and DesJardins. I wish he’d dropped the mitts a little more often but man what a beast.

I've only seen leclair drop gloves 1time in his entire career..and he didn't even fight it was broken up..against rich pilon n the islanders when he and lindros had that nasty rivalry going between the 2 of them. and I watched every game from time he joined flyers to time he left

Richter was unreal. Maybe the best performance I've ever seen by a goalie.

Agreed. I remember watching these games as a teenage and, yeah, Richter was good. But looking back now, I can't believe what he did. We hear every year how goaltenders are getting better and better and more sophisticated and more agile -- but look at Richter in this tournament! There is not a single goalie in the NHL these days that moves like that!

absolutely amazing hockey. This may have been the best hockey Ive ever seen in these 3 games. This was even better than the Stanely Cup Playoffs. Also the amount of hall of famers on both sides is incredible and 3 of the players in this game were just inducted into the hall of fame. Brendan Shanahan, Chris Chelios, and Scott Niedermeyer

Brett Hull is awesome, and hos skill at shooting are dynamite. Even though he only played until his Bantam years in the States, I naturally told myself to overlook the fact that he played Junior A in British Columbia before he was a player-student at the University of Michigan at Duluth. Mister Hull was known as an amateur as a pudgy guy and a sort of slow skater. Crikey, Brett Hull was great at Moncton in the A.H.L. and was on Prince Edward Island TV news for his achievements! Hull was sooo underrated, and he loved the Yanks for seeing his awesome skills. Mr Hull has been excellent for the Yanks and will always be greatly admired!!

What a pass though by Leetch to set up the shot!

That 1996 team was no miracle. They were simply the best team in the tournament. They played Canada 4 times and beat them 3(5-3, 5-2, 5-2), the only loss was in OT(4-3).. USA beat the powerful Russian team 5-2 in the round robin and 5-2 in the semi finals.. USA out scored their opponents 37-18 for the tournament. . Canada scored 26 goals and allowed 26 goals.

When Canada starts beating the USA in basketball, baseball or football on a regular basis the way the USA does Canada in hockey, then we can talk. Hockey in the USA is barely in the top 10 participation sports, but the USA hockey organization does a good job with the talent they do get. USA hockey has won six of the last ten U18 and U20(Junior) WC tournaments, Canada has won one. Yes, Canada overall has more and better hockey talent, but at one time, that difference was Grand Canyon like**. Not so much anymore and the USA is producing a lot of good young hockey players. **When I was introduced to hockey, there was one American in the NHL. I think his name was Tommy Williams. I do recall he played for the Bruins, which was how I became a Bruins fan.

Mike Richter proved in those 3 games he was the best goalie that ever played the game. his 3 game performance was 2nd to none. no matter the stanley cup playoffs,the olympics,or canada cup,their was no one who has played better than richter did. i challenge anyone to watch these 3 games and find another goalie that played better than Mike Richter did in this canada cup..maybe thats why he won mvp

I was there for Game 3 and was so pumped, was epic. Richter was unreal and when Lindros finally beat Richter we went nuts but Hull broke our hearts, great to see this again what a rivalry then

I remember this series and this game so well. I had just gotten out of the navy that year and was going to school and playing a ton of league/pickup hockey and watching a ton as well. Watched this whole series with the guys I played with, some American..some Canadian. It was a great time. Mike Richter....in almost 40 years of watching and playing hockey, probably the most impressive goaltending I've ever seen. And not just game 3 but I remember he was stellar in some of the other games as well.

Canadians have developed some healthy rivalries and a lot of improvements in both mens and women athletics with America and the rest of the world, that include; hockey 🏒, other winter sports, soccer ⚽️, track and field, basketball 🏀, and many more!

My favorite hockey game of all-time. We watched it live and all these years later I still act the same way when we score like it's live lol. USA! USA! USA!

I forgot just how good Mike Richter was in this series......

This was not only a huge win for USA, but every hockey fan outside Canada.

Canada has one 5/6 bvb tournaments since. So it was good for us too

lol Richter was such a fucking monster in this game. He was as good as Marty in his prime, but his prime didn't last nearly as long. Also played on nothing but bad teams after 1997 with the Rangers.

Mike Richter----MVP--and deservedly so. His non-butterfly style would still outperform most modern goalies.

Thanks for the upload dafoomie. I just watched this game a few days ago on NHL network. Probably the second best game in USA hockey history. Obviously #1 being Miracle on Ice

I'LL NEVER EVER FORGET THIS GAME. I a Flyers fan and when i saw Lindros high stick tkachuk i lost respect for him and counted the days off until we got rid of him. POS! the game was as dramatic as you could ever want. scoring 3 goals in just over 3 minutes to win was awesome! and it showed the Canada fans that American Hockey is just as good!

Man these rosters are just unreal. It's great seeing all these guys back on the ice.

doc emrick is the fuckin man, he makes watching hockey so intense like actually playing it

Stick to the back of the head, “That could’ve been a 4 minute penalty.” Never forget watching this with my Old Man. Incredible hockey. Great moment for a 13 y/o to be inspired by USA Hockey players just like him.

I attended all 3 games of this series in 1996. The first game was played in Hamilton and games 2 and 3 were played in Montreal. Richter stood on his. It was a very good series but it didn't compare to the 8 game Canada/Soviet Summit Series of 1972 won by Canada, or the 1976 Canada Cup tournament won by Canada, over Czecoslovakia in 2 games. Then there was the 1981 Canada Cup Final with the Soviets defeating Canada 8-1 in the final with a great display of Soviet hockey 🏒. In the 1984 Canada Cup, Canada defeated the favoured Soviets in a semifinal to win the right to play the Swedes in a 3 game final series winning in 2 games. The 1987 Canada Cup pitted finalists Canada and the Soviets in a 3 game series. The Soviets defeated Canada in Game 1, 6-5, in Montreal in a memorable game. The next two games were epic classics played in Hamilton and I was in attendance for both. I consider those two games the 2 best hockey games I have ever witnessed live and in person. Canada won the second game in the second overtime period, once again 6-5. Canada then won game 3 in the series, also 6-5, on a memorable goal scored by Mario Lemieux assisted by Wayne Gretzky, possibly the greatest goal scored in hockey history. The 1991 Canada Cup was won by the only undeafeated team in Canada Cup history. Russia 🇷🇺 didn't field one of it's best teams and failed to make the semi-finals setting up a match-up with the improving Americans against Team Canada in a 3 game play-off winning in 2 games. By 1996, the Americans had become good enough to finally win a Canada 🇨🇦 🏆Cup in 1996.

@@samsantucci1044 I wouldn’t argue those series were bigger. For a young 🏒 player growing up on the north side of Chicago, this was enormous. Chris Chelios, everything you wanted to be as a dreamer, from Chicago & a Blackhawk. Certainly #66 from #99 with Ducky crashing is a bigger moment for hockey then Amonte’s goal at 3:30 in the 3rd. Not for me tho.

Loved the old Chicago Stadium. Great place to watch a hockey game. The experience of hearing the Star Spangled Banner as the hairs on the back of your neck stood up was worth the price of admission alone. The original madhouse on Madison Avenue. Never saw a sold out arena full of people clear out of an area so quickly in my entire life❗ 😄🤣❗ Nine of us went to the game in a limo and we were lucky enough to catch the last bus 🚌 going back to the hotel.

As a Canadian, I will say that Team USA deserved this one. They wanted it so bad! Great talent in both sides!

Seeing some of the names in this game really brings me back to the good days of hockey

Just amazing hockey and my god I love the hitting and all the intensity!!!

Has to go down as one the greatest games ever played. Both Richter and Cujo(except for the Deadmarsh goal) were incredible.

This and the 2014 Western Conference Final was the best hockey I've ever seen.

What class Jean Beluveau showed presenting the trophy. A Canadien/Canadian Hockey God at the Forum presenting it to the U.S. He could hear the joy from the U.S. players and his smile was not forced at all. Can't imagine any US athlete doing that in reverse.

You aren't understanding my point. You think some of these ex NBA or MLB US greats would flash that kind of genuine smile handing over a trophy to the DR in baseball or Russia in Basketball? Go check out how the US 1972 Olympic Team reacted to losing to Russia for sportsmanship. We arent gracious losers.

I know. The US was awesome. Awesome goaltending and great play. They just crushed Canada in this tournament. I think they won 3 out of 4 because they played in the prelims. Now US hockey has slipped a bit again and Canada is back on top.

Tony Gambino USA has slipped in 2014 because of politics, but check out the the 2015 USA world's team. Just beat Finland 5-1. They are a young team, avereage age 24. Not saying this is the 2016 World Cup team (is won't be), but i'm going out on a limb and saying this team at worlds will medal. Reasoning - after long ignoring our European counterparts the team is made up of NHL, young talent, and European league talent. Circle here if you've been reading.

From 10:56 to 11:20, Tony Amonte absolutely cooks Gretzky for the entire shift, leading up to his tie-breaking (and eventual tournament-winning) goal. One of my favorite players of all time (Amonte) outplaying the Great One.

Magnificant game and great series; USA loses the first game in Phili in overtime, turns around and wins the last two games convincingly on Canadian soil in Montreal! The best rivalry in HOCKEY, and may be in all of sports.

I miss this type of hockey. Forget the Olympics for the pros. Bring back the world cup in the off-season and let every pro that's wants to play for the country without disrupting their season.

This was some serious f****n hockey! Both countries wanted it so bad. So many players very much in their prime... I hope its this good in a couple weeks! Updated in 2023: It didn't come close to being this good.

A couple of other thoughts I want to add... 1. This video doesn't do justice to how Richter played. There are two plays that come to mind. In the first period, there was a spin-o-rama by Steve Yzerman that Richter saved with his toe. In the 2nd period there was a play where (i might get the names wrong, but I think Gretzky) was behind the net, and he put it on the tape to Lindros out in front dead centre....and Lindros got all of it and Richter made a glove save. Crazy. 2. Just before Canada scored the second goal of the game, there was a Whistle from the Crowd as Fleury brought the puck into the U.S Zone....and for just a second you can see in the video, everyone stops playing.....very subtle but interesting as it sort of led to the go ahead goal at the time.

+packerd00 Hey Packerd....I agree but the problem is we didnt. I think Hull was on the U.S team because Canada did not choose him back in the day so he played for the U.S. We missed so many players from Canada in this cup.....Roy and Bourque come to mind....There were more but i cant remember

In 1980s 95% of the NHL players were from Canada only and Goons fighters no talent no skating skills! Today under 60% of the NHL players from Canada! Much better and tougher league today than 1980s NHL!

I would totally agree. I don't know if there will ever be an American team as stacked as 96, but the team now just doesn't scare anyone.

Amazing! What a battle between the goalies! These teams absolutely hated each other! And wow Gretzky the greatest player of all time missed a golden chance to tie it. God I love hockey

Canada fans have to admit these were great games and two great teams. Lemieux was missing, but Canada's centers were gretz, lindros, Sakic, and yzerman. Wow. And for usa richter is amazing and either Leetch or Chelios is always on the ice- perhaps the two best American born players. I would love to see all three games again, and games this good in September. Let's go Rangers!

Yeah from a red-blooded Canadian, this was certainly the best Team USA I ever saw. Finally had the depth and the sandpaper to get Canada off their game. It felt good to beat a large portion of that group in the Gold Medal game in Salt Lake.

By far the best series. Better than the summit series. Bc they were all teammates in the nhl. And that didn't matter at all once the country jerseys came on

In the future if a Hull is in the draft you take him first. That shot runs in the family!

Nowadays, international schedule is too busy with the Olympics games, NHL Play-offs, and world championships. So, it is almost impossible to re-introduce the World and Canada Cup competitions...

Mario Lemieux didn’t play. The old oilers were old by then. Not saying they weren’t still great but Gretzky retires three years later. It’s not like it was 87, it was 96. Have to give it to the USA though they fought like hell this series.

to think that both Canada and the United States were still missing 1 key player each. Mario Lemieux for Canada and Jermey Roenick for the United States
