96 f150 Steering Gear Box Adjustment OBS
here is the links to the best socket set out there we don't leave home without it
amzn.to/2mtlt4Q
amzn.to/2lZZXXX
here is how to adjust your steering gear box on your (OBS) f150 this is done on a 96 but will or should be the exact same on prior years with maybe the exception of the adjustment screw head. I have seen standard screw driver, and allen 9/16. if you don't have a 9/16 allen you can use a t27 torx. the nut that you loosen to adjust was a 16mm on my 96. Make sure you only adjust it 1 quarter turn, drive for few days to a week before next adjustment to prevent damage to your gearbox. very easy job hope we helped you thanks for watching make sure you click that like button and as always subscribe!!!

    I chased the same issue on my 94' F250 for a couple of years, replacing everything imaginable from tie rods, gear boxes, bushings, etc. all high end names like moog ,redhead, energy suspension, etc. I would do adjustments on gear box and it was perceived fixed by the tightness of the steering wheel but the wander was still notable. I eventually replaced the new steering shaft because the rag joint had a lot of play (less than a year old Dorman), with two Borgeson pieces, 1 collapsible shaft and 1 joint I got from ebay for around $120. It felt awesome and very responsive, but I began to get that feeling again. Well, I went back under the dashboard where the shaft goes into the joint of the steering wheel, gripping the shaft with vice grips and turning wheel, and that is where I saw more play, I would guess around 1/8" in shaft at joint of steering wheel. I decided to place a shim (feeler gauge) between the joint and shaft and torqued it down and all that play was gone from gear box to the steering wheel joint. Just a suggestion and my experience. A little bit of play here and there can equal quite a bit of wander. Good luck to all chasing down this issue.

    My steering box has a flat head on it does it work the same way? The turn screw is like a negative sign on it. My wheel is a bit sloppy while I'm driving down the road. I replaced the Tie Rod ends (all of them) and I Replaced the Steering box. It needs a new power steering pump but it's been sucked out pretty good thus far and new fluid has been added. I have a pump for it I would have to remove the fan shroud to pull the old pump off. I'll get to it one day soon enough. The summer just came in and it's blazing hot out here in Texas so I'm waiting on a cooler day or perhaps I may take it to a shop where I can work on it under some shade. I have the same Craftsman tool kit but from earlier bought it like 5+ years ago for my birthday. it has the T sockets on top where yours does not. It's my favorite kit thus far.

    How do you know the Allen bolt didn't back out ? you can't see it with that wrachet on it. You should have had the Allen key installed when you did that. I use a wrench and I can watch everything.. 16 mm wrench and a screwdriver cuz I have the slot on the 91 model. those are so easy , but I did the same with my 85 GM.. good call on 1/4 turns, you good there.. cheers!

    Is that adjustment necessary once the gears inside start to get worn out? I have replaced all my steering components and it is better but it’s still a little jerky and wobbly at higher speeds on not so good roads. I do have 32in tires on my 85 bronco. I will try your fix first and if that don’t work I am going to try a steering stabilizer. What are your thoughts? Thanks for the video.

    I always did, wanted to see how far around I took the adjuster as I loosened the locking nut. I'd never had it happen but was told by an old wrench that he'd seen some locking nuts take a full turn to loosen, and if you aren't able to see you took the adjuster back to it's starting point you may just take it to the mark and think you did it right-while actually loosening your box 3/4 turn.

She's a one owner and I'm positive it's never been adjusted. It actually had the factory radiator cap. The lady who bought it new was a horse rider and they say this truck was her pride and joy. Am I to understand, you loosen the nut a quarter turn, and then tighten the allenhead a quarter turn ?

  • @Ray56z

    @Ray56z

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's the reason you have to mark it. While loosening the nut, it also turns the adjuster the same amount of turn you do the nut-if you use a wrench instead of the ratchet you'll notice this, the adjuster may now be a quarter/half/or more around from it's starting point. You still take your adjuster mark to the quarter turn mark you made on the box. Using an open allen/torq/screw driver it may seem like you turned it more than a quarter turn, but back around to your mark is just a quarter turn past it's starting point-that the locking nut took it from. I always preferred using all open tools for this so everything is viewable as done. I actually viewed this because I'm thinking of doing this on my '94 F150 after replacing the tie-rods, ball joints, rotors/bearings, inspecting the rag joint, wanting a couple of weeks of driving before replacing the steering box-and the only times I'd done this in the past was on manual steering and wasn't sure power made a difference.

    You can check the steering box by having a buddy turn the steering wheel. You watch steering box and if the input from the steering column turns and there is a delay before the output shaft turns the box's gears are worn and need adjustment. If you are the independent type, or so unlikable that you have no buddies, you can position your cell phone's camera feature to record both the input and output shafts. Then use video mode and operate the steering wheel. Playback the video and look for any difference between the turning of the input and output shafts. Your cell phone will help you without drinking all your beer.
