946C Soldering Hot Plate - Unbox and Test

Soldering hot plate was the natural next step, knowing I would have to reflow a 2nd copy of the TileMap did give me a bit of a push.

Excellent results - looking forward to seeing a full board done up. It's a wonderful thing when labor hours drop and quality rises. One of those hand-held IR heat sensors for accurate temperature readings might be of some help, too, for the belt+suspenders approach.

@@JamesSharmanExtras I have taken heed of the comments on this video and will do the same with mine. Likewise I don't intend to use it unattended, or for more than a few minutes at a time, but these inexpensive Chinese products leave a lot to be desired sometimes. But then sometimes they can be surprisingly good. Let's see!

Indeed, I'm also happier about the heat coming from bellow. The hot air gun is hitting the chip itself full on!

@@JamesSharmanExtras I never get tired of watching them wiggle into position! I think leaving it on slightly more time would help, and also ensuring the pads have enough solder. But this really came out excellently!

I would suggest checking inside to see that the cabling does what it is supposed to do, like earth wire actually connected etc. Mine is the exact same model and did not have any issues, other people haven't had the same luck with theirs.

Yeah superb. I just had a certain PCB company send me 1000 welded on "Tactile domes" with the incorrect tolerance - so useless - Picked up a tiny station for a few quid (they are small boards) to throw under so as to simplify the removal of 1000 buttons LOL. Hot air only does so much. Top vid, nice result. looking forward. @@JamesSharmanExtras Also added the extra pass to calculate silence, I feared the other results were skewed against you given the occasional silence. ;) Fwiw I've considered Curious Marc, Learn electronics, Mr Carlson, Yannick Kilcher, Steve Gardner (SDG), and many, many more now. Channels big and small. They mainly hover around your average when silence is considered, within 40 or so wpm, with the odd exception but yeah seems like you are spot on

I saw a comment on AE for a slightly different model so maybe you want to check or at least not leave it unattended: "After setting it for 30 degrees and waiting for some time and coming back to it. I found it had suffered a thermal runaway and the plate fully melted. Close inspection revealed one of the thermistor wires had broken off and there was no thermal runaway protection built in. Highly do not recommend this product if you value your house and its fire safety rating."

Neat! I've been looking at these as well for when I move my build to SMD in the future, so it is great to see an unpacking and demo. Would you recommend learning hot air first or going straight to this technique?

Thanks Adrien! I’ve been really impressed with the results from this, I think it’s likely to be my main method for soldering full boards going forward but the hot air is not going to be entirely depreciated. So yeah, I would still recommend getting (and practicing with) the hot air first.

Just wondering why you chose a hotplate rather than going for a small hobby IR reflow oven. Looking online small oven's are available for not that much more than the hotplate you purchased if you shop around though I'm not exactly sure if the cheap reflow ovens are any good but they do have good reviews some of them.

I would like to have an oven for high reliability reflow, but the hot plate has multiple uses. And it allows me to capture video like this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m6mYo5avaMm7oaw.html
