I miss these back to basic 4x4's. I had an 87 Nissan king cab 4x4 truck. It was absolutely base with the 4 banger and 5 speed manual. The only change I made was more aggressive tyres when the originals wore down. That thing took a fishing boat all sorts of places, hauled wood, rocks and was just fun. Too bad it fell victim to rust.

My brother wanted one of these, they might be decent for rural environments but for cities there's no point in something so overly utilitarian. I still see them in Moscow's downtown sometimes, typically sitting in a neglected state and never on the actual roads. Better to just get a Niva, it's basically a UAZ with _some_ user comfort features while still remaining simple, reliable and rugged enough for very rough roads, I actually like it quite a bit.

If these UAZ trucks had actually made it to the United States, the Buick 3800 V6 certainly would have been appreciated. It would have had to have an automatic available and power steering standard. Air conditioning would have been a must.

Jon if you think the UAZs is different you should look at Beijing Jeep.

The Mahindra company was supposed to offer SUVs in America many years ago. Unfortunately, politics got in the way. It would have been received well today in an SUV crazed world.

I don't recall either one of these vehicles ever coming to the United States. They would have needed to have air conditioning at least. An automatic transmission would have been an absolute must for me.

@@AllCarswithJon It's a shame. That UAZ sport utility vehicle looks like a winner for off-road enthusiasts.

Glad You remember my advice. In Russia we pronounce it as the [UAS]. I remember the article in Rusian 'zine with the pre-production UAZ jeep w/GM engine being tested (that was circa 97-98). The end result was slightly confusing. P.S. Tge Trabant is definitely not Russian but the Lada is. You can still spot some Nivas in Canada.

@@AllCarswithJon well I hope Curbsideclassic can help You to improve the knowledge on Soviet and Russian cars. BTW, I recently found a test-drive video of the 1994 Lada Sagona (Motoring TV from Canada).

I find it ironic that bremach was about bring a SUV and truck (both by UAZ) to the United States. But what happened in Russia and Ukraine they suspend it.

@@1985toyotacamry well the jeep is too old to be sold in the US. The upgrade would be too costly.

@@runoflife87 true but for some reason they sell it for 26 grand for it. Yes it's old. Yes it's a bit underpowered. But you can get 4WD as standard with a transfer case. I like it to be honest.

This episode of autoweek was a cruel hoax because the UAZ never made it to the USA. Maybe Canada got some?
