Hydrangea expert told me most hydrangeas need at least four or more hours of sun to bloom well. I have a Annabelle smooth hydrangea and she does bloom in shade.

I live in zone 5b in Colorado and because of our elevation we have harsh sun. I have some in full sun and they do well but they get shade starting around 2. I’ve tried some in another place where they are in shade all day until about 3. The harsh late afternoon sun burns them so badly. Don’t be afraid to move them if they don’t do well. I have found them to be forgiving.

All of your hydrangeas are gorgeous, but the coloring of the Tuff Stuff Top Fun hydrangea is stunning! I planted a Limelight and a Little Quick Fire three years ago, and they’ve exploded this year! I would love to add the Top Fun to my landscape. Faddegon’s is my go-to nursery for hydrangeas. I’ll have to see if they carry it. I was never a fan of hydrangeas. Growing up, I only ever knew of the blue variety and I don't care for blue flowers that are too "in your face" with their blueness 😂 BUT NOW I can not get enough of them! They are so gorgeous. So many varieties. Luckily I do not have the space to do too much damage but I am finding myself slowly replacing other perennial shrubs with hydrangeas.

I am obsessed with hydrangeas as well. I planted a wall of limelights and they are performing beautifully. I also planted a hedge of Bobo hydrangea on either side of our front property (inspired by Heidi from Garden Crossing) and they are looking magical - especially in the evening like you had mentioned that they have a glow to them -- this is very true. I'm most proud of taking a Limelight hydrangea shrub and turning it into a standard by selecting the longest strongest stem and staking it - it turned out beautifully and year two is looking lovely. I loved this hydrangea tour and I learned a few tips -- Zone 5b as well 🇨🇦

Good morning Eric and.Christopher, just found your channel. Beautiful gardens. Want to inquire about your blue kazoo spireas . I garden in CT 6a. I’ve tried mine both in more shade and in morning sun (5 hours ) can’t seem to get that gorgeous color on my leaves. What conditions are yours planted in? Want to transplant mine in the spring to a new location to get them to shine. Also, what is the ornamental tree above the limelight prime hydrangea with the silver foliage? BTW, I also have light o day, and haven’t seen blooms. I’ve had it two yrs. Would love a video about your most deer resistant shrubs and trees as I have very heavy deer and mostly rabbit populations here

The quickfire standard transformation is fantastic! Wow! The blush hydrangeas are going to look great out front. Love that color. You guys should try puffer fish! I bought a 3 gallon bobo in May. In the past few weeks, it has started to flop. 😟 It looks great otherwise so I think it just needs to mature. It gets full sun and has grow nicely in the past 3 months. Firelight tidbits are ones of my favorites as well. Last year I bought my dad two almost mature size ones. Because they were so huge, they were expensive- $60 each. They look even better this year than last year. He really enjoys them. He had no hydrangeas because he wasn’t aware of all the new ones for full sun. Back in the day he had tried a few macrophylla that didn’t fare well.

I’m in Dutchess Co NY and also a big fan of hydrangeas. I think I have around 80+. I have arborescence, paniculata and just planted a couple oakleafs. I have a grove of macrophylla but find that many years they don’t bloom in 5b due to the weather. (Nice foliage though). My question is, where do you source your hydrangeas? I essentially just mail order mine but I often don’t see some of the varieties you mentioned. Thanks!
Excellent collection!! I would have loved to hear how much shade each variety can handle, as well as sun, and still bloom. Northern sun is so different from Southern sun, so often the amount of shade/sun they can handle is different than what is talked about on other channels. I just relocated a few macrophylla that needed more light than they were getting.

Just wondering how your hydrangeas that you believe mites have gotten to are doing this season. I have 2 limelight’s that look exactly the same . I did some research, and some articles say that this happens when pesticides are sprayed near or around the plant. ( which I did last season) . Im technically in 9B but my max temp (summer) is usually no more than 70 and minimum is maybe 30 (usually dont freeze). Typically hydrangeas do well here (coastal N. CA) so I'm confused as to why some of the panicles only go to zone 8 but not 9. I thought it might be due to heat but there are plenty of places inland that are 9B and get consistent heat. Any idea why the panicles just go to zone 8? I went ahead and ordered anyway. Will give a try! Looking forward to it!

Apparently the USDA zones haven't been updated since the 80's....it really doesn't make too much sense to me. If you are coastal and temperate you should be totally fine with the panicles in particular. I think there are also sunset zones in your area that you can look up that might give you a better idea of what you can plant.

@@growformegardening thx for that reminder. I've got to dust off my sunset gardening book. It's OLD!! lol...
Love the limelight hedge! What size were the limelights when you planted them? Gallon size or larger?

They were actually 2 gallon. The hedge was planted before we really knew what we were doing and they came from the big box stores.
I need more hydrangeas 😂

Yes you do!
Wow, wow, wow - your garden is SO beautiful!! Any recommendations for a compact hydrangea (3-4') that can take afternoon sun and overhead watering (from our hanging baskets)? Would Bobo or Let's Dance work? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I garden in Zone 5 also.

I feel like I'd aim for a panicle....they are a bit more sturdy. I like Little Lime Punch, Bobo, maybe the new Puffer Fish!

Thanks! I do like the look of Little Lime Punch with the beautiful fall colors. Also, can you share the names of some of your companion plants. I noticed a tall blue plant - I think it's a salvia. Thanks!@@growformegardening

This video is from back before we learned a lot about editing. If you look for a tour video from last summer you'll get all the names!
Been watching your hydrangea videos, LOVE them!! Thank you for explaining so throughly each of their growth habit and performance. I'm debating to either to plant a limelight or vanilla strawberry hydrangea hedge. What's your thoughts on those two?

We have both and love them….but if I were you I would look into Quick Fire Fab.

@growforme5b I have that too, and I have collected almost all PW paniculata hydrangeas 😆. Thought about using quickfire fab for hedges, but the growth rate is much slower compared to limelight and VS. Limelight prime is not a good performer compared to quickfire fab in my garden. As far as the height I need to achieve to block our neighbors, limelight or VS would be my choice. I've seen so many limelight hydrangea hedges, beautiful white blooms, but because I have not seen any VS hedge, it makes me wonder if there is a reason they can't be grown as a hedge. I'm kinda stuck, my left and right brains fight constantly, lol...

I only mention the fab because it blooms earlier... I don't think there's any reason NOT to use the VS as a hedge, but I can understand hesitating because you haven't seen one.

@growforme5b I guess I'll do one side of limelight and the otherwise VS. I love quickfire fab, but the growth rate is kinda slower. Thank you very much!
We had some really bad storms recently and my hydrangeas blooms are on the ground! Any suggestions for my babies?

Give them a gentle shake to get the heaviest of the water out and let them dry. Unfortunately once they are smushed they don’t always come back up.
Beautiful hydrangeas! Do you know if Incrediball blush will take full sun in zone 7a?

I'm not sure about that. I feel like there’s a big difference between zone five and zone seven when it comes to hydrangeas in the sun
Beautiful! What’s the plant next to the firelight tidbit hydrangeas with the blue foliage?

@@growformegardening Thank you!
How do you overwinter your zone five hydrangeas? I live in zone 5B Chicagoland area and was told not to bother with zone five or higher because they use all their energy putting out growth and then there’s nothing left for the blooms. Any advice you have is truly appreciated. Thank you.

Which variety are you looking to overwinter??
One question: how and when so you fertilize hydrangeas? My little lime punch is not growing much. One bloom in second year. I did move it in the spring. Any suggestions?

We fertilize with rose tone in spring when we prune and then again in July just before the bloom
