916 fuel pump problem

A very strange 916 fuel pump issue, something I have never seen before. If anyone knows what's happening here, please let me know.

Identical problem, good to find your video! After fitting a new pump and finding out that there was no fuel I took the pump out again and tested it like your video but without the gaze and it worked. Put the gaze back on and fitted the pump again, resulting in no fuel again. One comment, the old pump looked slightly different than the new pump, the old pump had an intake point that was lower than the new one.

996 has a plastic vane that went on the bottom of the pump. it could be relevant.

@@bradthebikeboy I asked the Ducati dealer (2 dealers) and nobody can explain. I decided to do a final disassembly (5th time), took the gaze off and made a beautiful trip with a perfect working 916. Pump will now be vulnerable for contamination but I take the risk. I now have the skill to replace the pump in 15 minutes :) the next will be easy.

Totally bizarre. Cavitation maybe? (Cavitation is a phenomenon in which rapid changes of pressure in a liquid lead to the formation of small vapor-filled cavities in places where the pressure is relatively low.) Thanks for sharing and see you next Thursday. Mark 848

Do not know if you find the issue, but it may be worth to test the pump on another bike, as it can be a relay related issue, or leads/connectors problem instead of pump problem

Weird. No clues sorry Brad. I was thinking the slightest amount of resistance might have been the answer but cutting the bottom out of the gauze blew that argument.

Could the plastic housing of the filter be binding the housing of the pump, causing it to distort and lose its clearance? Try cutting away all of the filter and snapping the ring onto the pump, see if it does the same thing, if so the pump housing is being squashed

the filter clips on to the rubber below the bottom of the pump. it can't cause the pump to distort.

The pump is missing a part . Their is a piece that goes on the pu.p then the strainer to help with flow

well, technically, it's the wrong pump as this is a 916. the pump fitted to it, done by another workshop before the bike came to me because they couldn't get it to go, is the 996 style and should have the extension yes. but the 916 doesn't. see the second video to see what a correct 916 pump looks like.

That is a weird fault. The only thing I can think of is that the impeller isn't getting air out of it. It did sound different like it was spinning in air. 🤔 Sure you will find out why. 👍

The gauze filter raises the pump in the jug reducing the head of fuel available to the inlet, doesn´t explain why it behaves like that in the tank but is one avenue to explore - I´d also try some other pumps - need three in agreement to eliminate the pump.

the height of the pump in the jug depends on how far i dropped it in, it's not relevant. 3 pumps have shown the same result.

Is the fitment of the guaze closing off a full circuit (circuit enabled by the liquid). Thinking logically the only thing the guaze potentially does is obscure, so is it obscuring that part of the pump that allows a full circuit in its absence?

Been looking at a lot of start issues like this could it be the fuel regulator is not 100%?

there's no regulator in the video mate. if you see the pinned comment at the top, the second video shows the difference between a 916 fuel pump - the walbro one with snout - and a 996 pump that was fitted incorrectly here before the bike came to me to work out. the 996 style pump uses a plastic extension on the bottom to extend the pump entry down to the bottom of the screen filter. i had a local shop call a couple of week ago with a 996 that sometimes would have fuel pressure and sometimes not. turns out, it didn't have the extension.

It could be that holding the pump body above the fuel level with the filter attaced the pump lost it's prime. Some wear in the pump and no joy.

the problem is the distance between the filter screen and the pump inlet. if you watch the video pinned in the top comment you can see the pump the bike should have had (was replaced before it came to me) and how it is different. later bikes that use the pump in this video have a plastic fitting that goes on the bottom of the pump which lowers the pick up to the bottom of the filter.

If you filled the pipes with fuel it's probably would work, my guess is with the basket filter it can not pick up Almost like it's scavenging due to big gap between the filter & pump

Charge by the hour do you Brad? I had a pump where every time it was installed back into the tank it wouldn’t work ,, but that was purely electrical ... your issue is , well , just weird ! Makes no sense at all
