Ye gods… when something like this happens they always talk about how they could have seen it coming, it was such a surprise, yet here they KNEW the man was delusional and thinking about killing his family and yet they said, eh, we’ll pick him up on MONDAY?!? To be fair, regarding the woman that couldn't escape the blind man, it was a blind man in his own home. He probably knew the area well enough to navigate effectively and she was probably struggling to keep quiet. Also, there are different kinds of blind. He may have been able to see minimal colors/shapes/movements...not enough to identify anything visually regardless of corrective lenses, but enough to at least see the only source of movement in a small space.

  • @ss.surprise

    @ss.surprise

    Ай бұрын

    Also, blind doesn't mean small or slow. A blind large man that can move quickly, could block the doorways and be difficult to navigate around in small rooms or spaces. Especially because, he's not completely deaf. Being blind also has a lot of different forms from being able to see a very small area fine to not being able to see anything clearly past a few inches to having a lot of floaters and stuff clogging up your vision. These are all types of being blind which would mean that if he could still potentially see her at times, and would make it difficult to escape him despite his blindness, as it is minimal vision, rather than a complete and utter lack of vision.

    My mom was a 911 operator for a couple decades. There's one story in particular she told me that fits. Okay, so, it's a cloudy night. Someone calls the police to report a UFO above our local living museum. By chance, there happens to be officers there, so she calls them and skeptically asks if they can see a UFO above them. Officers get out, look up, and reply: 'sorry, that's us'. The lights on the police cars had been reflecting off the clouds, making the clouds look like there was something in there flashing alternating red and blue lights.

    Regarding the story about a blind person, there is a 911 operator that should be fired in my personal opinion. I happen to be mostly blind, and granted I don't know all of the details of this particular individual, but to suggest that blind people can't be dangerous is just absurd. Not saying that we all are or that I am, but saying that we're people just like everyone else. Don't assume you know everything about a person based on a physical disability. Actually in cases of ongoing alcohol addiction and abuse there is a condition known as "alcohol hallucinosis" which follows immediately after heavy alcohol use, it is rare but not abundently so, but more likely it would have been reduced situational awareness and capacity to process stimuli. Had to make a weird call once. There's a hydro electric power plant over a river with a pedestrian bridge right next to it. I went over that bridge and found dozens of mostly dead birds all over it. Apparently a whole swarm of starlings crashed into the big windows of the power plant and fell down onto the bridge. Didn't really know who to call and decided for the fire department. I don't think they believed me at first but did eventually show up and clean up the mess.

    Dispatched in a small town. Early in the morning, I got a 911 call from a male who stated he was going to tell me where to find a dead body. He gave the address, then said I might want to take the phone away from my ear because it would be loud. I heard a loud bang, a scream, then nothing. I immediately knew who it was from his voice. I didn't have any time to try to interact with him because it happened so fast. He totally staged it. He put tarps around to make clean up easy. He was an alcoholic but made sure no alcohol bottles were anywhere to be seen. It was very sad.

    Irt the story about the girl with FD and two broken legs, a lot of us Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome patients have similar stories, but with absurd dislocations instead of fractures (though we are prone to those, as well). Operator: "Your girlfriend has a dislocated shoulder AND dislocated ribs? And how did that happen?" Friend's BF: "She flopped backwards onto the bed too hard with one arm up." Operator: "She...? What's making you think her shoulder and ribs are dislocated?" Friend's BF: "Oh, they're VERY obviously dislocated. She has a genetic disorder and dislocates easily. Please just send an ambulance and we can explain it to them." Operator: "Sir, I need to be sure that an ambulance is warranted before I can do that and I'm not convinced that what you described is possible." After some more back-and-forth, he called his mum to drive them to the hospital and called me to go with them and explain her medical situation, since I was a human genetics major at the time and also have EDS. EDS causes a lot of secondary conditions, including Dysautonomia, which can prevent the body from regulating heart rate and blood pressure properly. With the shock and pain of her injuries, her blood pressure was super low and she was tachycardic, so they needed someone who could explain everything on her behalf. It's also just far more likely we'll be taken seriously if we have others there to advocate for us and confirm that yes, the injuries/symptoms we're reporting are actually a thing. Having some pre-med education and being able to "speak medical-ese" can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the doctor's personality, so I tend to tread lightly until I know how that'll be received. I've encountered FAR too many docs who get annoyed (as if my educational background is a threat to their authority or something) and just refuse to believe anything I say after that point. It's led to serious harm and a LOT of delayed diagnoses and treatment, over the years. Thankfully, these days it's more common for doctors to have at least heard of EDS, but most still don't know much about it -- and certainly not enough to treat us without guidance. It's exhausting 😑

    Tarantulas can recognize their owner as far as I know, but it is still possible for one to panic when put into a mouth.

    yeah, I mean, pretty much any pet will still bite you if you stress it out enough. Being put in someone's mouth is a pretty good reason to bite! But they probably do recognise the owner, even bees or jumping spiders can do that.

    Appreciate the short, witty, snappy comments you make on the stories. It annoys me probably more than it should when narrators ramble between stories, usually with nothing especially unique or interesting to say. Thumbs up, my dude.

    EMS in training here. The broken legs story had me FLOORED bc who in their right mind would send an ambulance out without supplies? Ambulances should be stocked for any emergency, bc stocking up as needed for every call is a surefire way to get someone killed. Even if they were a bit disbelieving about the idea of someone breaking limbs just by walking, they need to be prepared for anything from a false alarm to a nearly fatal scenario.

    In her teens my cousin did a trial shift as a 999 call handler. One of the calls she took during that shift was from a lady who'd come home and found a s****de note her husband had written. During the call, the lady found him. He'd hung himself. Pretty traumatic for a teenager to hear on their first shift. My cousin was given a short break after that call and then told to get back to it. No additional support provided. Unsurprisingly, she decided that career wasn't right for her.

    I got to the story that ended at about the 14 minute mark (the murder/suicide), and unfortunately, I have more than one story like that from working night shift 911 Dispatch in a rural community. The worst part for me was almost always knowing them, or knowing someone that was close to them. Sometimes I got help to the people I knew in time, sometimes it got there too late.

    Not a 911 operator but I am a PBX operator in a hospital. Our policy is we have no advice nurses because we cannot give medical advice over the phone so it's up to your discretion if you wanna come to the emergency room. We've gotten a few odd calls, my coworker and I, but there was one call I was so dumbfounded by. Dude calls saying something about Viagra and his well you know what wasn't becoming erect and figuring out what to do.... I just told him I'd transfer him to the emergency room because sometimes talking with the kinds of people we get is very frustrating. He never called back like majority of people do so idk what he did.

    Not a 911 operator but i do have this story, i was getting ready for bed, it was about 10 o clock at night when i heard the doorbell ringing, so I opened my door and saw an old woman like..she was probrably in her mid 80’s, dressed all nice, she had glasses on and finally she said “Have you seen the boys?” I answered “No..im sorry i dont know who that is.” “Oh..do you think your neighbours have seen them?” “No..I’m sorry there are only car repair shops around here.” It was weird because she was talking about them as if they were her kids, my sister gets woken up by all this and said “Whats going on?” When i told her she Said “Oh..Iill go look for Them with her.” I whispered in Her ear “are you crazy? We dont even know this woman.” She ignored me and went outside and actually looked around for Them, about 30 minutes later, my sister returns, not with the Old lady tho, i looked outside, but she was nowhere to be found,

    when I was a kid, back when you had to rely on phone books n stuff, my aunt had a great big bobcat get itself trapped in her enclosed front entryway right after she finished moving into that house. it took her 2 days of calling the non emergency line to get them to send somebody out there that could safely handle it. she had propped the screen door open to try and get it to leave on its own but it wouldnt leave the corner it had scurried into- turns out it was tangled up in fishing line, had a hook caught in its 'armpit' and the line was starting to cut off circulation to its leg. the big tangle of line got caught in the bottom of the table it was hiding under. she just pushed a bowl of water to its reach with a broom handle so it could still drink in the meantime until she got somebody that would take her seriously. she says she finally got a younger sounding guy to actually hear her out and get animal control to her. by the time they got there, the bobcat was so weak, it was hardly fighting when they got it free, but according to her it was alive and they took it for treatment.

A lady walked up and said she was shot" nothing more. I pause giving him a chance to give more info. Finally ask "and is she shot? Do you need an ambulance?" This is around at night on New years Eve. Unfortunately she ended up being the 1
