Just an FYI, if anyone ever runs in to some issue with Tesla trying to void their warranty, remember the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act. Even if they write doing X will void your warranty, there are still limitations in place on manufacturers by law. Reach out to your attorney general ASAP if they claim that your warranty is voided. You are absolutely allowed to fix your own car and you do not have to use ONLY OEM parts. Like all laws though, the act is a little loose, but the attorney general can be an extremely useful tool. I've taken advantage of their services many times.

This makes sense. It's similar to walking into a store and seeing a sign on the floor saying, "Caution: Wet Floor". Ok, thanks for letting me know. But if I slip and break my leg, that sign won't get the store out from under a lawsuit. They'll still have to pay! Obviously, messing with your Tesla is trickier. If you don't know what you're doing an actively damage your car, it's no different than dropping your laptop and expecting a full warranty. On the other hand, jailbreaking your software should not be cause to have your warranty voided. At least not in every case.

@@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 I might get that swapping parts with non OEM could be logical as a self fix which could be an odd reason to void the warranty. However, I firmly believe that purposefully jailbreaking or opening up the software for modifications on a software heavy vehicle is cause for your warranty to be voided. Seems unreasonable to remove the safety bars on a balcony for a few centimeters of space and then complain about it that the safety measures arent there.

I have a new 2023 Model 3 with LFP battery. Having 100% battery charge daily is a nice bonus. IT means I have a nice usable range for the money. I could have spent much much more on a Model 3 long range, but at 80% charge it meant the effective range (if you follow guidelines) tops out only 20-30 miles more than my Standard range LFP. Paired with supercharger network i'm finding it's more than sufficient for road trips as well.

  • @danharold3087

If you do some digging the LFP battery will last longer if you don't regularly charge to 100%. Tesla wants you to charge it to 100% once a week to keep the battery indicator in sync with the condition of the battery. At least that is what I recall.

@@danharold3087 I've read that as well. Also it's my understanding that it degrades in the first 100k miles of use at about the same rate as the regular Tesla battery whether keep it 100% or not. But then after that the degradation of the battery levels off, and loss of range over time/mileage is much less.

My 2019 Lr I charge it to 80-90% 233 miles at 80% and 263 at 90% and 293 at 100%. I’ve only charge it to 95% once for a long road trip. When I’m at a supercharger to go from 90% to 100% the speed drops down to like 30kwh. Says it will take about 30 minutes but I’m not that patient to wait. I will agree it is annoying only charging to 80% BUT I have not needed to really charge that much except for my thanksgiving road trip. 80% charge will last me for 3-4 days without charging. I drive it to work and back and around town.

  • @PlaysByProx

@@danharold3087 This is incorrect. The battery will last longer regardless, it'll just degrade faster until 100k miles then balance off. The LFP battery itself is said 12,000 cycles regardless of 100% charging, where NMC will only last 1,500 cycles.

Another informative video Ryan. 🙂 I wish more people would take the time to educate themselves on their Teslas. I watched one video where someone was claiming that their Tesla battery pack had degraded to 80% max charge with only 20k miles on it. Their test methodology was to charge it to 100% (YIKES!!!) and then drain it to 0% (Double YIKES!!!) and compare their range to the EPA estimated range for their Tesla (Sigh). Of course it was hardly a surprise that their mileage didn't match with the EPA estimate anymore than it would with an ICE vehicle given the myriad of variables that the person failed to take into account (e.g. terrain, weather, traffic, battery degradation due to abusing their battery pack, etc.). In another video about degradation the owner casually mentioned that he ran a test (100% to 0%) many times in the past to document his battery degradation. That's like wondering why your paint is getting scratched and then mentioning that you take it through an automatic car wash every few days. Both sets of videos fit my category of "Well, there's your problem." content.

Some great tips here, I do disagree with the device that allows you to go hands-free with autopilot. I'm perfectly fine to pay attention and have my hands right next to the wheel while using autopilot. While some people may use this in an unsafe way, that doesn't mean everybody is. I do not like having to apply pressure to my steering wheel while I'm going straight down the road. That's counterintuitive to driving.

I don't have one of these devices, but I agree with you. Other cars use "eye tracking" to make sure you're paying attention, so that is clearly the important part. Tesla just happens to use the steering wheel to monitor this. Paying attention and being always ready to take over is the important part though. Unfortunately, Tesla has to cater to the lowest common denominator, and that means unsafe people.

@Ryan - thanks for the video. On the charging topic the new Model 3 batteries actually need to be charged to a 100% to allow the BMS system to correctly measure the state of charge. This is because of the new charging curve associated with the chemical composition of the battery. Basically if you don't do it to 100% the car's estimated range will be very unpredictable because of the new discharge curve. Just look into it there are plenty of videos explaining this!

I've never heard of Tesla's non-leather seats cracking, although that does happen to leather seats over time. The material Tesla an other automakers uses should last about 10 times that of leather, as it's far more durable. The fake leather material couchs use may look similar, but is not. Correct me if I am wrong. Any EV battery has a finite number of charging cycles. If you use the vehicles power for other uses like powering your home or excessive use for powering electrical devices, this will result in your battery requiring more charging cycles. Your battery will require replacing after fewer miles travelled than if the battery had been used solely for vehicle propulsion.

Does it mean that LFP batteries are immune to extra battery degradation associated with frequent full charges? No… The only reason why Tesla recommends to fully charge the Model 3 cars that have LFP batteries is because it helps the BMS (Battery Management System) to estimate the available battery capacity more precisely. Compared to other battery chemistries, LFP’s charge/discharge voltage curves are extremely flat. Basically, the voltage only rises when the battery is almost full and drops when it’s almost empty. This is why it’s much harder for a BMS to estimate correctly the SoC of a LFP battery. Regarding customer service, for Tesla is more important to have a reliable GoM than to have a battery with a fenomenal cycle life - since one feature becomes obvious to the customer much sooner than the other.

The car we went to test drive was found on the Edmunds web app, and is a 2019 Model 3 that is marked down to a very good price. When we arrived, they brought the car to the door for us, but as we attempted to leave the lot on the test drive the sales rep noticed that battery was at 0% charge, so we immediately pulled it into their charging bay. We looked at other Teslas on the lot and asked to drive three of them. The sales rep got the key cards, and two of the cars had dead 12 volt batteries, so we couldn't even open the doors, and though we got in the third car, the main battery was so dead the touch screen wouldn't respond. What are your thoughts on car dealers who know nothing about EVs and brick them after placing them on the lot? How do you evaluate the potential damage to the battery after this has happened? if you store your car for a long period of time this uses more energy and is inefficient as you have to keep the battery charged. As long as it's under warranty, there is not much reason to go to a 3rd party. However, I think it's only a matter of time before someone challenges them on this, under the Moss-Magnuson Act. Even something like opening the battery can be done without violating a warranty, unless the act of opening it can be demonstrated to be the cause of the failure. My approach has been to not make mechanical modifications to my vehicles until after the warranty is up. Only cosmetic stuff allowed, generally speaking.

  • @tesla_tap

Well, opening top of the battery destorys the seal, and normally the cover is destroyed in the process of removal. I don't see how most people could put it back together and ensure it is properly sealed. So I can see Tesla voiding the battery warranty if you open it up. Now there are a few covers that can be opened without damaging the battery, for example to replace the pyro fuse. It's less clear if work on those items would void the warranty if you properly seal it up after the work is done. Then again, if the battery is in warranty, why would anyone pull it apart?

@@tesla_tap Understood, and I acknowledged that if it's under warranty, no reason to take it anywhere else. And yes, if they have made it impossible to open the battery without causing damage, then that's not the best example. What I mean to say is, generically, one should be able to do anything on their vehicle and be protected from a voided warranty as long the thing they did can't be proven to cause a failure. That was the point of the Moss-Magnusson act. So they can't void the warranty on the car because you got the windows tinted, that sort of thing. With that said, manufacturers are purposely making things such that the only way to service them is destructively, and that's not an accident. This is why Right-to-repair reforms are so important, and, thankfully, a non-partisan issue.

This is a recommendation for daily usage. Most likely, you aren’t daily using over 165km of range.
