One of the ways club companies make "game improvement" clubs hit further is just strengthen the lofts. So that game improvement gap wedge is probably stronger in loft than your regular gap wedge. It's probably the same loft as my old 8 or 9 iron. So in a way, it's just an illusion. You think you are hitting farther, but you've just changed the numbers on the bottom of your clubs, and had to replace unhittable 3 and 4 irons with hybrids. But you still only have 14 clubs, and the long and short ones don't really hit the ball longer than your old long and short ones. The only reason gap wedges, (some companies call them Approach wedges, or A wedges), exist is because club companies kept strengthening the lofts of all the irons except the sand wedge until there was a big loft gap between pitching wedge and sand wedge. So they invented a new wedge to fill the gap, and invented hybrids to replace the 3 and 4 irons that had now become unhittable for average players. The process hasn't stopped either. There is now a huge gap between game improvement pitching wedges and regular 51-52 degree gap wedges. They are going to need a new wedge to fill that gap soon. They are more forgiving than old forged blades or persimmon headed woods, though. The weighting, (perimeter weighting, low and back weighting), takes care of that.
