Mcclain really reminds me of myself as a kid when i first started playing aoe2. I would also build a wall across the whole map. And then i would put towers behind walls. I would have exactly 20 villagers - 5 on every resource. For some reason I figured that was the optimal amount. And then i would slowly advance through the ages, buying all the upgrades and fending off any attacks. After I got all the upgrades (most of which I had no idea what their purpose was because I didn't speak English back then), I would build a 'HUGE' army. And by 'huge' I mean around 20 units. And finally would attack and defeat the AI and feel like an absolute military mastermind. ahh... simpler times

not too far fetched for when the game originally came out. pop max for most, if not all, campaign missions was 75. Think even for multiplayer. can't remember cuz didn't really do that back then. But one would have had in their mind that such as a lot. With such campaigns 40 vills starts to feel like an over boom.

It probably didn't help that I had a pirated copy of the game (this was in mainland china at the time) and I couldn't understand what's going on (my dumbass thought skirmishers were some form of spearmen and was confused why they throw their spears, I also thought the spearman was a farmer with its large hat and whatnot).

not to mention that with all those early campaign missions the max pop is 75. Meaning a big boom is 30-40 villagers. So stopping at around 13-20 would feel kind of reasonable. So do the tutorial campaign and then jump into ranked. would make sense for a kid's skill and thought process.

Me too! I think T90 is responsible for bringing many players like us to AoE2 ranked. In my case- I really doubted I could play, because I'm a turn based tactics/tbs/rpg guy, and consider myself too slow for rts. So I really doubted I would play AoE2, I even pirated, just to save myself from wasting money if I'm end up never launching the game. But when I found enough will to launch it, set up key bindings, and train the basic controls and transition through ages, T90 LEL videos gave me the courage to play against LEL players, and even hope to do better sometimes. Of course, then I bought the game then as well. My elo went to 700, and then started to go up to around 1100. I ended up as a player who plays for two weeks, then does not for 3-6 months, retraining/relearning upon return each time. But I feel comfortable at this elo, and this type of time investment, so I'm glad to have found my place in this. Still, LEL is what I keep close to my heart.

16:25 Yeah, as a low elo player I constantly just assume the other player is doing everything right if I can't see evidence otherwise. I recently surrendered a game where I got tower rushed and lost probably 12 vills and access to half my resources thinking the game was over. I turn around after surrendering to see I still had a 9 vill advantage cause the other player took all their eco off food and onto stone, gold, and wood. If I had just played on a little longer his momentum would have died out and I'd have prolly won but the low elo fear won out.

Never played aoe2, I only played Age of Mythology personally, so i was worried I wouldn't understand/follow along. However this was easy to follow along, and reminds me a lot of Bronze Heroes from Husky back when for starcraft 2. Love your commentary, and glad I was recommended this channel/video!

God this video cracks me up. In fact, I started laughing as soon as I saw the title and thumbnail. These cast are so nice, it's just chill observing players who just enjoy the game in their own way, which is what Age of Empires does best. Anyways, now that we've have part one and two, Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, I think we'll need part three, Return of the King when Mcclain is at 1 elo.

These people have some of the toughest mentals out there, I don't mean to demean them but the way some of these people play they would struggle with bots yet alone with other players. Despite multiple losing streaks they carry on and seem to have fun.

I noticed you talking about youtube algorithms so I thought I'd offer up my experience as a viewer to maybe help out? Ive never watched your videos before and never played age of empires, but the reason I like these videos is because I can understand what a low elo player is, something about the watching the lowest skill bracket in any game is fascinating because they must be doing something truly unique to be so low. And because I dont have any intentions of getting into the game I dont really care about who is good at it or who the pros are. The video that got pushed to my feed was your "Smallest map ever" video, I guess because it was trending however I only watched a part of it. These low elo videos are what will turn me into a returning viewer. Idk if any of that is helpful to you but either way I wish you the best

There are also side benefits that some civs get based on techs: Spanish get +50 gold for any tech, Aztec monks gain HP based on monastery techs, etc. These specific bonuses don't make coinage/banking worthwhile currently, but I think it complicates future similar bonuses if you start adjusting available techs depending on game type.

T90, what people are hearing is just electrical interference (noise). To remove it, add a Reaper VST filter called "reafir_standalone" to your mic audio chain. Select Mode: Subtract and check "Automatically build noise profile", then don't speak or make any sound for a few seconds; just let the filter pick up ambient noise. Put it at the start of your filter chain and it should help. He won't read this, but maybe his tech guy will. 🤔

As someone that never played online for over a decade until i started watching this channel 2 years ago i did start out feeling like my opponent always knew better but thanks to your videos i came to realize that i am actually above average in game knowledge, being aware of what every tech in the game does and whenever i actually stopped playing for fun and started taking things seriously i would consistently win, of course i would always switch back to playing for fun after a while cuz that's what i play games for, but i always realized afterwards that my base level had improved and eventually i was so good i my friends asked me to teach them how to play properly cuz they kept getting 1v4d by another friend of mine, after 2 months they were all better than him thanks to my teachings while i still can 1v3 them lol

I can't be too mad at blue for taking so long to attack. When I was playing maybe my 6th ranked game I played a game where I was scared to attack so naturally I waited till imperial age and had 60+ paladins and 4 trebs. When I moved into the scary darkness I realized that my opponent was playing farm simulator in their base. They hadn't made a single military building or unit, they didn't even garrison their vils in TCs or fight back with villagers. That game made me realize I should probably try attacking earlier.
