8th edition is the only reason I'm still in the hobby. I was so burnt out at the end of 7th edition. I hated formations and the ridiculous balance issues. 8th edition was a breath of fresh air. It was simple enough for new people, and once you mastered it, there was more than enough strategic game play. For me, it is as close to perfect as warhammer can be.

8th edition is what pushed me from having an interest in the universe to actually playing the game. I'll always be thankful for that

Speaking as someone who has been playing since 4th edition (when I was 8), the start of 8th edition was a wonderful break from late 7th edition, when for my army I needed, kidding you not, 13 books to fully run my Chaos Space Marine army. They did this by mercilessly gutting everything that gave the army flavour, but even I will admit it needed to happen. However, before the 9th edition codex came out, I was back up to 8 books needed to run it properly. Then the 9th edition codex came out and while the army got better, it was the dawn of build as in box, so weapon options became weird.

8th edition was sure as hell fun - my gateway back into the hobby especially with the magazines 😊

I remember there was a build in 7th edition where you would have invisible bikes that could only be hit on 6s and had some kind of ridiculous rerollable invuln. The move to powerlevel for 10th was a hard transition for my game group, since a lot of our hobby was coming up with and tweaking lists.

Imagine my shock returning to the game in 10th after quitting in 5th. It looks like the same game, but boy does it play differently.

Yeah, those two editions are practically incomparable.

I remember Adepticon at the end of 7th. Every table either had multiple Wraithknights, Riptides, and Flying Hive Tyrants.Riptide, Even other armies would ally in order to have some variation of those. Balence was just so bad that anything outside of just spamming those wasn't any good and would be shot off the board turn 1.

Very interesting on how some of the rarlier editons worked

I caught the end of 8th, having started in 3rd, got back in with 5th, missed 6-7. Gotta be hinest, i kiss the old silly blast markers and silly tables.

I'm glad 8th went and saved them and all that, and they changed their tune (for a while) but I just can't stand the new editions. Templates and AP "overhaul" was just going back to some really old rules we already had a long time ago, and that's great, but everything having a toughness and renaming all the special rules for no reason while not fixing the worst flaws in the core mechanics and more, it just felt like two steps forward five steps back to me.

i just picked up the game in 10th but the more i hear about past editions the more i try to convince some friends to learn the old rules with me

I started in 9th, crazy how much things had changed in the game just before.

8th was before my time so it's always nice to hear about it

I miss armor value and blast templates a lot, but i have to admit that 8th makes knights feel a lot better.

Nothing felt better in early editions than getting a melta gun around the back side of a L-Russ and hitting it I'm the back AV.

Idk, I remember knights literally deleting units with D Strength stomps back in the day XD. They definitely felt less insane in 8th!

8th is the reason I started playing the game, but I only joined late in the edition. The Start was a shit show. But it did get better, thankfully.

I never played this edition, and I feel like I missed out. Was this Orks Nova pre-Uber?? Or were you like 3 hours away? That story was pain. 😂

8th was the reason I got back into 40K, the game and gw was just too much of a mess beforehand

A balanced game would be nice, but how is GW going to make FOMO pressure sales for a rare over priced model that it is so broken that it tables all other armies in one turn that you will only get to play with once before being nerfed to the warp or outright banned from play?

Maybe I'm biased because I started with 1st edition. But just for me ..ruleswise.. after 1st E rules got worse and worse until it climaxed into this insult called 10th. And no. RT is NOT 1st Edition. Rogue Trader is Rogue Trader, not wh40k

I started playing the day 3rd edition launched. I played almost daily for the entirety of 3rd and 4th. 5th was straight trash since it invalidated every terrain template in the world instantly. I stopped completely, only painting other peoples armies, until 7th. I played a little bit of 7th with an Eldar army i had sitting in a closet for years. 8th edition was so awful i think i played maybe 5 games total. Absolute dog shit of a game. 9th was the worst table top game ever to exist (including Dreadfleet). 10 is a pleasant return to 3rd edition style of game. Its still pretty bad, but lightyears better than 5th-9th.
