Luke, thank you for the wonderful story, which has elements of entertainment and education, as always🙂. How to interpret the ending of the story? Optimist's version: In romantic stories with a happy ending, explosions accompany the lovers' kisses. Moderate optimist's version😉: In the real world, conflict persists and explosions signify a war, which Edward had no idea about in the Simulation.

Hi Luke, I really love this story! I enjoyed every moment of your presentation even though I'm normally not a science fiction fan. I was quite surprised to hear that it was mostly written by AI and would like to know more about the changings you've made. I also ignored that AI could create such a poetic language. For me the story is perfect as it is now, with the final sentence you added. The open end leaves the possibility to each listener to have his own interpretation. That's probably the reason why a lot of people might love it.

I have a feeling that the woman is not real, but a product of his imagination, after years of him being alone. The line 'I'm real' kind of hints that he's trying to convince himself of her existence. The story feels a bit like 'Fight Club', where the main character conjures up a whole new identity. Plus, the explosions at the end reinforce my idea, I think :>

This story is at a very high level of English for advanced students. As an ESL teacher, I have learned not to overload students with too many words. Also out of the thousands of English words, choose words which are useful everyday. For example, when would an English speaker use the word “stir” in the sense move? Rarely! The story you have chosen is literary and highly descriptive this predominantly uses words which are not of a high frequency in everyday English. Stories are a great way to learn English but please choose a lower level vocabulary of common useful 42:32 words. For example “a sprawling metropolis” is not going to be heard or spoken by a student learning English unless they are aiming at a university level.

I am familiar with the principles you are talking about and as an English teacher this always factors into my teaching in classrooms. With these episodes I am doing something slightly different. Allowing learners of English to enjoy and also understand a piece of literature read out orally. There is also a place for this in people’s English learning. Variety and a multi-stranded approach to language learning and teaching covers many bases. Also, with your comment you’re assuming that every learner is at an intermediate level and that vocabulary beyond the most common words is not useful, interesting or worth learning. The story is quite literary but this is because it is a piece of literature. I also do plenty of episodes with more conversational spoken English.
