88-Keys Reflects On Creating The Black Star Classic 'Thieves In The Night' | People's Party Clip

Музыка

In this clip from People's Party, Talib Kweli and co-host Jasmin Leigh talk with rapper and producer 88-Keys -- who has collaborated with everyone from Kanye and Kid Cudi to Sia and Mos Def [Yasiin Bey] -- about the difference between looping and chopping when making beats, which leads 88-Keys and Kweli to reflect back on creating the classic Black Star song "Thieves In The Night" and the process behind that beat.
The story itself, and 88's idea that Kweli and Yasiin were balling, is a funny moment that has to be heard from the Golden Era of hip-hop.

I feel so blessed to be exposed to these behind the scenes conversations. I'm so thankful for these interviews Talib. I'm just a humble blue eyed white boy from Memphis, TN and the Black Star album was one of the most eye opening and influential albums of my life. I studied every lyric. You guys have so much access in your memories to undocumented culture, lyricist lounge, creation and movement of underground conscious hip-hop, etc. I really feel that all the stories you guys have to share must be documented and hope you all produce something big and extensive together. Almost like a Ken Burns hip-hop documentary. How many stories and how much history is now gone where someone should have spoken to greats like Davis, Coltrane, Parker, Fitzgerald, Armstrong, etc. and captured their stories. Much love. ✊🏽 I could listen to all your podasts all the time. Thanks for sharing.

Is chopping/flipping more creative than looping? Sure. Is it better? Not when you consider the crazy list of all time great songs that are straight loops with drums, instrument, or effects laced over them. A lot of the time the loop itself can't be improved on, and you're weakening the music trying to impress someone. A good producer is the one who has the wisdom to know what really needs to be done with a sample. Even Preem has loops.

I was the same when I was young. I'd chop up a sample just for the 'technical' flex of it all. It usually ended up sounding the same as the original. I just started looping as time went on and I got over myself. Saved myself the time when it wasn't needed. I found that what you do with that loop to make it your own was as technically impressive than chopping it.
