88-Keys Reflects On Creating The Black Star Classic 'Thieves In The Night' | People's Party Clip
Музыка
In this clip from People's Party, Talib Kweli and co-host Jasmin Leigh talk with rapper and producer 88-Keys -- who has collaborated with everyone from Kanye and Kid Cudi to Sia and Mos Def [Yasiin Bey] -- about the difference between looping and chopping when making beats, which leads 88-Keys and Kweli to reflect back on creating the classic Black Star song "Thieves In The Night" and the process behind that beat.
The story itself, and 88's idea that Kweli and Yasiin were balling, is a funny moment that has to be heard from the Golden Era of hip-hop.

I feel like on thieves in the night mos murders kweli but on respiration when talib hits you with. "Look up in the sky for GOD, what you'll see besides the SMOG is broken dreams flying away on the wings of the obscene. thoughts that people put in the air, places where you can get murdered over a GLARE, yet everything is FAIR."
Thieves In The Night' is one of my favorite Black Star songs. Love hearing the story behind it especially as a producer myself.

Thieves in the night Classic beyond the understanding of the word "Classic" Historical monumental Landmark hip-hop beat and the verses!!!!
Sometimes a loop is just too dope but as a producer you want more of a challenge and try to make it your own as much as possible that’s why chopping is important.

Imagine looping and chopping. I try to do that on my beats loop like a drum sample and chop up my melody beats
The song thieves in the night changed my life at 15 years old when I heard it. This video is classic for speaking on its making. Bless
Man that whole song just changed my perspective on life. I remember breaking down every single line to my older brother and seeing his mind begin to spark in a way that never happened before. Truly a classic Still one of my top 5 songs of all time
"Chasing after death so we can call ourselves brave. Still living like mental slaves..."

Artistic Positive Creative Black Males like these, needed NOW more than ever❗ They're ALL Professors beyond Rap and Hip Hop❗ Knowledge of Self, Wisdom, and Understanding, true Kings. Greater than the so-called Kings of the UK!! The Kings of Africa and Egypt were Innovative. The British Kings were simple minded Thieves, "If I didn't make it, I'm going to take it!" These two MEN are in the bloodline of the true Original Man❗❗
Stay Up (Viagra) by 88 keys is a classic!!!!

Greatest hip hop song of all time. Without a doubt
Maybe the greatest hiphop song of all time beautiful
I feel so blessed to be exposed to these behind the scenes conversations. I'm so thankful for these interviews Talib. I'm just a humble blue eyed white boy from Memphis, TN and the Black Star album was one of the most eye opening and influential albums of my life. I studied every lyric. You guys have so much access in your memories to undocumented culture, lyricist lounge, creation and movement of underground conscious hip-hop, etc. I really feel that all the stories you guys have to share must be documented and hope you all produce something big and extensive together. Almost like a Ken Burns hip-hop documentary. How many stories and how much history is now gone where someone should have spoken to greats like Davis, Coltrane, Parker, Fitzgerald, Armstrong, etc. and captured their stories. Much love. ✊🏽 I could listen to all your podasts all the time. Thanks for sharing.
Loooooove 88 Keys always checked got him growing up. STAY UP! is one of my favorite tracks by him. That's gotts be a loop lol. Can't wait for this one.
Yo this is my favorite song in life and still speaks about/on life till this day. This is the most game ever put on a song in history. I always thought no one could ever get on this beat because it'd be blaspheme but i seen this young black lady do a remix some years back and I always wondered if your guys ever seen it, i think you guys would of been proud see was spittings bars life bars. But i think its deleted because i cant find it no more? Did you ever see it Talib?
This song is the pinnacle of poetics and lyrical skill!!!!! Solidified Talib and Mos IMO
Love is one of my favorite hip hop beats ever
this is so good, just what i needed.
my favorite hip hop song of all time
Back in the studio! Fuck yes, good talk. Thieves in the night is one of the best hip hop songs ever made.
Much love...Johannesburg, South Africa.
Definitely in my top three 🌹
yeah, interviews with beatmakers is a welcomed change
Liked before watching. One of the greatest Hip Hop song of all time in my estimation. My appreciation goes out to each individual involved in creating this masterpiece. I've been truly inspired by it.
88 is one of the most underrated producers of all time. Thieves in the night is a pure classic.
incredible
Thieves in the night is probable one of the greatest songs of all times, that beat is legendary.
This is doap, looking forward to the full interview. Get Large Pro on here 🍻
Large pro!✊🏾
Yo! I read The Buest Eyes about 30 years ago and remember vividly how that last paragraphy summed up everything so well. Love BlackStar but never quite made that's connection. Thanks for enlightening! And PLEASE give hip hop new life via second BlackStar album.
Is chopping/flipping more creative than looping? Sure. Is it better? Not when you consider the crazy list of all time great songs that are straight loops with drums, instrument, or effects laced over them. A lot of the time the loop itself can't be improved on, and you're weakening the music trying to impress someone. A good producer is the one who has the wisdom to know what really needs to be done with a sample. Even Preem has loops.
"I give a damn if any fan recall my legacy im trying to live life in the sight of Gods memory" fav lyric of all time
This is one of those...well documented, South Africa.
Dude is so underrated. Dope producer.
Mos Def's verse on Thieves is honestly probably the best verse ever written, at least imo. It's just unreal, densely packed lyrics, incredible meaning and it's still relevant so many years later, the message is just unbelievable.
I'mma be honest... wasn't big on reading but when I found out that the song, or chorus of Thieves In The Night was inspired by a book I felt like I had to read it and Damn! Love Black Star, love Toni Morrison. Big ups and shout out from South Africa 👍😁
Chopped n screwed 🔥🔥🔥
Great interviewer and great producer. Dope video
This is one of the few songs I've seriously considered getting a lyric tattoo of, there is deep truth in the words they speak
88 Keys is the truest version of a geek or nerd lol. Legend don’t get it fucked up though!
Most cats in this area be lovin the hysteria
Love Large Pro, heavily slept on! Also, he gives a lot of credit to Paul C.
That love track he did for mos is classic tho!!!
"Doctor Kweli" I hope it sticks lol
Good sitch bro
Thieves in the night helped lead me to knowledge of self
Who would have thought 88 Keys has the siiiiiickest personality!!
i know you wicked on the keys man!
I was the same when I was young. I'd chop up a sample just for the 'technical' flex of it all. It usually ended up sounding the same as the original. I just started looping as time went on and I got over myself. Saved myself the time when it wasn't needed. I found that what you do with that loop to make it your own was as technically impressive than chopping it.

Word I'm currently going through that struggle as well
Music is just music. It doesn't matter if it's chopped or straight up sample. It's the sound that matters. This is my rule when creating music.
Thieves is in my opinion the best verse Yasiin laid on that album.
The Death Of Adam such a good mixtape.
We need the damn sample it’s 2020!
