Here in East Texas we have fall/spring weather from mid-October thru the end of May...that's 7 months of gorgeous weather! June we start getting summer weather 90's during the day 70's at night with lots of rain...really humid👎 July can get even hotter but the humidity goes away with upper 90's thru September and NO mosquitoes and No flies! You get up early and about 11am you find a fan or THE AC! Evenings are nice and if you swim 👍it's the best! I grew up in Iowa, no way would I go back! Looking forward to your build! A couple of things; 1) have a wood stove in your workshop, 2) high ceilings so you can pallet stack your tractor implements, etc. 3) leave a place for a hydraulic lift or what I did is I put in a pit for changing oil and getting under vehicles. The pit doubles as a tornado shelter if you don't have a basement in the house. In Texas we don't have basements and I grew up in tornado alley in Iowa! 4) use some graphics to put all your stuff in the building to see if you got the right size! Good luck, you'll love it...a hot tub in the gym might be a pool start! Take care my friends👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

you are right... you can never build them too large. We need to get one built as well and I am already thinking to go bigger than my first thoughts. Drive through is smart. Everyone I have talked to says to position garage doors so you can pull through. One thing I am debating is enclose a small bit of the patio on the south side of the building that gets all the sun for future use as a bit of a small greenhouse to start plants for the garden or flowers for the mrs for around the house. we are within 10 years of retirement and we may have time to tinker with that more then.

Peace and Blessings Melissa and Mike. I am excited that you have made the decision to turn the pretty "wood shed" into an attractive tool and equipment crib for servicing your various attachments and as a place to keep expensive equipment dry and stylishly out of the weather. Also a good refueling station as its location is out of the way and secure. Now, this added structure for the housing of the rest of your large equipment vehicles sounds like a workshop, garage and dream recreational building that will make your complex second to none. Be careful that the project doesn't turn out too perfect as newly acquired friends and neighbors will be hard to get rid of unless you charge rent, or a membership fee. Salutations!!!

We built a 50x64 shed and we enlarged the plans twice during construction. I asked the contractor what we thought and he said " I have never built a building too large for a customer". It will really be nice to have most of the equipment indoors. With our weather in Wisconsin, I really like having all our equipment stored inside. All of the "finishing" costs will FAR exceed the cost of the building. You only get one chance to do it "right". Good luck, Bob

Mike, Melissa is right, build it bigger 😉 Trust me, it is cheaper to do it bigger now than trying to add on in a couple of years. I have watched long enough to know that no matter how big you make it, it is going to fill up. BTW, the in floor heat is a great idea. Put in a liquid system, electric has a bad habit of breaking wires if you get any frost movement of your concrete. Have a day.

Would you like to know what I wish I had in my garage about 1000 times now? A bathroom, just one where I can go relieve natures duty and wash my hands properly without having to go in the house and track anything inside of there or take off my shoes or get yelled at for ruining a towel or get that piece of stuff out of my eye.... the list goes on and on. Take it into consideration if you haven't. Means you would have to add heat to the building too. One thing I did think about with the pool if you built one, and also now with the garage- you like to cut fire wood, you have a nice set up for it; have you thought of using an outdoor wood boiler for heating the building and possibly the water in the pool down the road? That could change the pool from a 1 season thing to more of a 3 season use. Plus radiant floor heat is so cozy.

I support your rain barrel idea. I have rain barrels that combined collect 1400 litres of water. Algae does grow in the above ground tanks but as we use rain water for the garden it is not a problem. Try to research ultra violet purification. You need to plan in for head pressure by having indoor storage tank. Suitable enough for showers, a hose outlet and toilet tank filling.

I'm working on a similar project. 40 x 72 is a real nice size shop/garage. ALWAYS build bigger than you think you will need. In my experience, I cannot emphasize the value & usefulness of lean to's/side sheds on each side of the building. 20' lean to's on each side with a 20' roof extension over the end with the garage doors. The extra cost for concrete for the lean to's and roof extension are well worth it as they provide great storage & multi-purpose use as well as a great place to pressure wash and clean equipment under cover. If going with a steel building, get the 26 gauge steel, request Zack screws for ALL steel fasteners. If a pole barn type building, go with Perma-columns with slab on grade or at least a foundation stem wall of concrete pier in sonotubes with Perma-column brackets. Don't forget about a nice 4 ' or longer slit type drain in the center of the slab floor graded towards the drain to make it easy pressure wash & squeegee. Road Base makes a great foundation base material that packs down great and minimizes settling & concrete cracks. 200 amp power service panel? Insulation? I suspect you already have this building planned out to the small details. Looking forward to see it completed. 👍

I am not complaining, I love Texas and wouldn't trade it for anyplace else. The mid summer heat is just part of it and I actually adjust to it and do what I need to do even in the heat. Humidity was not too high day and nice breeze, not too bad. Paul from Texas

I think you should build your own pool, you’ve already got most of the equipment to do it. You could just pick an area and rock it and compact it dig out the pool first and if you do it more of a square shape you can use standard rebar and not have to have a custom frame put in there to blow the concrete on and you could just have them come blow the concrete then the rest is just painting a sealer on it and plumbing it and that’s fairly easy. Then just have them pour some concrete for the patio area and you can stamp or do stone or whatever you guys want but you could probably save 60 or 70% of the cost by doing it yourself or most of it anyway you can prep that ground pour cement, You can dig the hole and you can lay the rebar and do the plumbing. It’s a lot less difficult than it seems. Those companies that come out and do it for you charge ridiculous amounts for labor and they just contract most of it out to someone else anyway, if you stay with a simple design you could probably do the whole thing yourself really, you’re just making a concrete box in the ground and sealing it from the inside.

In slab radiant is a very nice type of heat. Insulate the slab well. Even if you don't initially want it, insulate the slab and install the tubing if the budget allows. A friend of mine didn't in his barn and he now regrets it. Make sure to run antifreeze in it. The only drawback I have found is it isn't instaheat as my brother used to call it. It takes awhile to change temp due to the mass of the slab. It isn't like flipping on a hot air furnace or ceiling heater.

Just a suggestion, do 10x16 doors ,you will thank me later. Built a 32x40 with a 10x16 door on the 32 side and the 40 side. Don't limit yourself on the in and out of the building especially with backing in trailers and your future two post hydraulic lift that you'll have to get through the doorway. Would also suggest tall ceiling height.

Well, Mike, I don't often comment. But I couldn't help my self. I'm in the sunny southwest. Here in North Texas, we've had a very mild spring and so far a mild summer. I guess it's from a certain perspective. I healded from SW PA and have lived here for several decades. No, you don't get use to the blistering heat of the summers. Yet, most of the year it is nice. With temps in the 60 and 70s. However, this year has been really different than any of the others. We had such a mild spring. Things grew much faster and are at least a month ahead of time. I'm seeing plants that typically don't grow until August. We have horse apples here and they typically don't appear until late July or early August. Yet, they are nearly fully ri[e and some are even falling. Ther is this flower that typically comes up in late August. It reminds me of the fall because of its bright orange color. It hasn't really broken a 100 yet down here. But I heard it will this week. I can't remember the last time we hadn't broken a 100 by the middle of June. not complaining. I can't wait till fall. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the new building going up. Thanks, Tim from North Texas.

Good Evening Mike and Melissa! Here in Northwest Florida, Pensacola, we have had a wet past week or two, but now we are forecast to be in the mid-upper 90's with "feels like" in the mid-100's to low 110's. It's hot and humid here!

The tractors get a house , check. 9 foot garage doors? or sliders? Don’t forget workshop space. And oh yeah, electrical service. I’m thinking at least a 60 amp 240v feeder from the house. Perhaps more. Once you have tractors, learning to weld is often necessary. A decent modest welder needs a 30 amp dryer circuit. Bigger welders need a 50 amp range circuit. And then of course there is the pool. So a pool house / garage perhaps? All sounds great , my best wishes for a enjoyable project.

That's awesome, new building more room to do things inside. And a pool in the future. Cant to see how it turns out.

I thought it was a garage. I would recommend to do in floor heating. I use to build houses and garages. Everyone that put in floor heat in their garage said it was the best decision they made.

This is funny, we too are putting up a 40x72. We just bought a 45ft class A and need a building. Will help us get some trailers under roof as well. Let’s see how it goes.

Good morning from MidMo. Slept in a little later - the Mrs had been up 3-4 hours already. But she didn’t do a 30-mile bike ride in 15 mph winds last night! It’s been high 80s and low 90s here for several weeks. On a couple days I was doing landscaping, I got a couple quarts low on the hydro. Seven years in TX and twenty in SC after growing up in western Ozarks and one does get used to the heat. I pace myself a little more now I’m retired. 😉 And I organize harder labor in cooler parts of the day if I can. It took longer to get used to the cold winters again when we moved back here. Oh well. Your multipurpose building sounds really functional, and using your milled hardwood will be really cool to see, and I’m sure, personally satisfying to you. How will the exterior be finished?

Who needs a hydraulic cylinder on a log splitter when Melissa can just jam them into the cutter head like that!

Just one thought to share... consider running roof ridge east-west. This gives you nice large southern roof area for solar panels for pool heating and electric if you want it. On our farm all hot water and electricity is via solar with net metering connection to grid... might be available in your state. Also, you have lots of comments suggesting in-floor radiant heating. This is in-fact very nice and comfortable. But it is expensive and only provides heat. For this size building, and it not being residential, you probably are not required to have centraI heating. One or two gas fireplaces on thermostats + a "mini-split" for A/C and heat pump would suffice at a much lower cost.

Hot in North Georgia but lots of rain. Cutting 3 acres of grass 2 times a week and still could bail hay out of it some days.

So much to comment on here..... First of all, I think that Melissa has now earned the additional title of "splitter chic"!!!💪💪💪 That is mighty impressive seeing you maneuver those rounds! This will be so much fun watching that building go up. Mike:. You will be in your glory! I know you can't wait to sink your teeth into that excavation. Lastly, I thought I had lapsed into some sort of delirium state when I heard Mike say "future pool"????? Don't worry Melissa! It has been permanently recorded for all of history. Must mean it is coming!!!!🏊🏊🏊

Well in Southeast Oklahoma it's about 97 degrees and high humidity. Heat index is in the danger zone for the next couple of days. Glad you're getting a garage and all built . I built a 30 x 50 shop last year for my tractor and my tools and what not and sure enough it's not big enough. Starting on a 30 x 40 pole barn next week .

It’s has been warm in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area over the past week, not terribly hot and humid, but sticky enough to be uncomfortable while working outside. Plus, it hadn’t cooled off much at night so it was not great sleeping weather either.
