80105's boiler back in it's frames

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This was a grand day indeed for the steam guys at The Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway when on the 9th of March 2024 the boiler of 2-6-4T British Railways Class 4MT 'Standard Tank' No.80105 was reunited with its frames which was a huge step forward and not one of the working staff present was under 69 years old now that what you call pure dedication. Please love these guys and give them a big thumbs up.
Owned by Locomotive Owners’ Group (Scotland) Ltd.
BR black livery.
Built 1955, BR Brighton Works. Original cost £18,206.
After World War 2, it was necessary to provide new locomotives to replace worn out equipment. So, when the railways were amalgamated into British Railways, the locomotive engineers were given the task "to compare existing techniques and standardise the best". From this came a range of twelve new classes of locomotives to suit different power requirements. The 2-6-4 tank design was intended for heavy mixed traffic duties, and 155 were built for service throughout Britain, of which almost 50 saw duties in Scotland.
In 1952, the first of the class in Scotland were allocated to Inverurie (replacing life-expired locomotives from the Great North of Scotland Railway on services to Ballater, Buchan and Aberdeen - Inverness) and to Polmadie and Corkerhill sheds in Glasgow for outer suburban traffic which extended even to Edinburgh (Princes Street), and to Carlisle (via Dumfries). Later arrivals were shedded at Dundee, Stirling and Perth (the latter working to Inverness). The class was also found at Dumfries, Hawick and Beattock (for banking assistance).
No.80105 was one of a batch which was set to work on the London, Tilbury and Southend section out of London Fenchurch St. It was displaced by electrification, after only 8 years service, to the Western Region for use on the Cambrian Coast sections. The locomotive was then based variously at Machynlleth, Shrewsbury and Croes Newydd, before final withdrawal in 1965, still in almost new condition and in no need of a heavy overhaul.
The locomotive was bought from Woodham's scrapyard in Barry, South Wales, in 1975 by a group of SRPS members. It is a mainstay of Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway services, but has also visited several other railways north and south of the border.

Enjoyable video. Quite the job. Fitting the ash pan seemed harder that setting the whole rig on the frame. Excellent work. I'm of that age group and I'm having a fit trying to assemble some metal shelving units. Take care, stay safe. jack, In The Valley of The Sun, Arizona, U.S.A.

OH DEAR Well done everybody..... All in all, a job well done after much hard work being done to prepare it.......BUT: Well what could possibly go wrong if you put your hand in the space between the bottom of the Foundation Ring and the Ashpan at 23:09....and then leave your fingers there for a while....? A Hard Hat and a High-Viz Jacket won't be much use....... ...and yes, Crowbars do bend when your trying to do too much with them........ James Hennighan Yorkshire, England

Always a major milestone in any restoration 👏 I often walk by the shed at the Strathspey Railway in Aviemore, and they just reunited the boiler and frames of one of their Ivatt 2MTs last week 😀 On a sidenote: any idea what's happening with that hydrogen train they were experimenting with?

well done sad the age of these guys holding this knowledge and interest. not helped by the complete lack of technical classes anymore at schools for young kids all they get is how to design things not how to make it with real tools.

Dunno if you've happened on the Railcar Restorers channel. ⅔of their team (i.e. 2 of them) are under 40 and it'd be impossible to get more 'hands on', when it comes to bodywork. I'm delighted to follow their efforts on KZread (as well as give 'em a gratuitous plug!!), as so many 1st gen DMMUs were lost to indifference, or for being on the "TFD" list (asbestos and corrosion due to electrochemical reactivity being common culprits) ....and I'm sure with steam locos, many of us can remember when a need for, say, a replacement throat plate meant a steam loco being sidelined indefinitely, or mined for spares. Where I'd like to see some progress is with fuel. Whatever muck is being thrown into fireboxes right now ain't doing the movement too many favours. BR 'standards' seem to cope far better than older, saturated locos, where sooner or later, smoke is going to produce some unwelcome developments. TBH, the same is true of too many preserved diesels
