This bit is not about Howard having to spend 800$ on wine, we and they all know they can all afford it. It's about making it relatable for poor folks like us (we generally all had a similar situation) and about restaurant etiquette. This is an all-time great moment in spite of Artie. Artie is forcing it. He's stealing the ball. He's not meant to be a primary ball-handler and initiate the offense. He should set picks and occasionally free himself up for an open shot. You can tell that Howard is annoyed. Every time Artie stops the show and asks a question, Howard has to steer it back. Robin kind of diminishes the reveal when early on she says, "some of the bottles cost $1200," this revelation took away some of the impact, as it gave us a range of what the bottle could cost and so we were not as surprised when we found out that the bottle she ordered was $800. Robin pushed back and said that the bottle was $700, but then quickly agreed with Howard when he insisted confidently that it was $800. It was probably $800 with tax. So the bottle was $800, that is set in stone, until of course when Howard went to Fred for a comment and Fred said the bottle was $700. Howard was annoyed by this. Fred is from Mars. He's so off most of the time.

Even though at this time Artie was a millionaire, it shows how much of a normal person he was compared to Robin and Howard and their lifestyles. I mean Artie might blow 20 grand in Vegas in a weekend but would never pay 800 for a bottle of wine and some hoity toity restaurant. He is out of his league in this convo but if he doesnt pitch in then its two completely out of touch people discussing something 99.9 percent of the audience cant relate to.
