I work on heavy equipment and I bought a waterloo 52" catterpillar tool box years ago because it was made in the usa with a warranty. Only to find out some time later that waterloo was bought by Stanley black and Decker after my box was broken into and I needed to get a lock because mine was pretty tore up. Didn't get any tools though. I have been looking at the homak 72" rs pro combo. Now I think I will look into the others you tested if they have the size I need. Thanks for the videos lots of helpful info

    I have 2 of the older series US General 44" bottom, 2 top boxes with 2 side cabinets and a locker all bolted together in my garage. The main reason I went with these 2 years ago is they are basic cabinets without the silly gimmicks that I know will likely fail in a few years. I mean a power strip that is light duty that doesn't do a thing for me. What I want is a cabinet that sits at the same location in my garage and can be used to store my tools that is lockable. I get that and the cabinets I have are doing the job. I have 40 plus years of tools in the cabinets and since I am retired all my work tools plus the tools I acquired over the years are now in location and I can get any tool quickly and easily be found. They have endured with a basic design and no gimmicks.

    After seeing your video on the new low (clearance) price of the Kobalt cabinet, I went to my local Lowes to take a look with true intent to make the purchase. I did a thorough examination of the build quality you spoke about in your "part 1" video and I was not pleased in the least. As a matter of fact, I was IMPRESSED at how LOW the quality was and how much more sturdy even my old 2009 era Kobalt tool cabinet felt. The part that bothered me the most was the drawer bottoms. The thin sheet metal they use is simply riveted to the thin frame of the drawer. EVEN the new entry level Craftsman cabinets at Lowes had much more sturdy and thick feeling drawer bottoms. Bottom line: I simply could not pull the trigger on the Kobalt cabinet. I am now waiting for the best Harbor Freight coupon to come out so I can buy a roller cabinet and then eventually (and hopefully) buy the upper cabinet when/if Harbor Freight ever does come out with the "hutch" style, which I love as well. Thank you for the great content. We appreciate you and the work you put in.

    I ended up getting the 52” husky. One main thing that kept me from getting a US general box was that they don’t have a hutch like I wanted with the additional power strips that makes it very convenient to leave my chargers up there to charge my power tools, phone, radio, etc. also soft close drawers, all rated at 120lbs a piece with the bottom drawers being 200lb rated. Also comes with a separate privacy drawer which is also a nice addition. Seeing the us general, idk WHAT people are saying about the build quality being better with US general because it’s just as flimsy as their rolling toolboxes and I have one of those. They don’t have a great “hutch”, if you want to call it that. They have too many shallow drawers that you can’t fully utilize for standup sockets, etc. I do like harbor freight and their equipment but I don’t think they hit the mark on some of their tool chests. And I do think the husky 52” wins to it’s comparable is general.

    Alternate opinion: I find the hutch an inefficient waste of space and would rather have more drawers. However, the HF top is not my ideal either, but closer to what I prefer (the struts takes up space, are not needed, and will need to be replaced periodically)

    I saw the Kobalt model at our local Lowes. I do like the hutch idea, but it takes away from the total number of drawers. The drawers on the Kobalt seem a little "sticky" trying to pull them out and while the soft-close drawer slides are nice, it has too much affect on opening the drawers. I'm restricted by available space in my garage so a 41" cabinet is just too much. The price is pretty darn attractive though. I've looked at the 26" US General at our local HF and I really like the way the drawers open and close. Not a lot of interference. Just a nice little bit of resistance to hold them in and not so hard to push in. Without the hutch, I think you get more storage space for the dollar compared to the large box with a hutch. And come on, they're counting all that air space under the lid so how much useful space are you really getting? Kind of like a bag of potato chips. I'm going with the US General 26", top and bottom.

  • @jayryan7473

    Whatever you DO NOT buy drawers that use tension to hold them closed! It takes pressure to close the last couple inches and it does so with a minor jolt and little by little everything gets pushed towards the back.

    The Den of Tools that makes a lot of sense. I’ve summered in Vegas and Reno. Needless to say that was a super hot summer. Lots of fun. But super hot. Have you guys tried prospecting for gold while out in Montana? To me that is one of the biggest draws about being out there. You can take the kids camping and go gold hunting. The reason Idaho has the weird shape it does and looks like Montana took a big bite out of Idaho is because Montana did take a big bite out of Idaho. Idaho was originally drafted as a rectangle but the gold in eastern Idaho drew a lot of criminal elements that Idaho didn’t wanna deal with. So they said here you go Montana. And so now western Montana is full of gold. I dream of buying houses in Bozeman to rent to college kids and being able to prospect for gold and hunt/trap in Montana. But I may change the dream to include wintering in Vegas. Which is super smart. If I’m correct Nevada doesn’t have state income tax. And Montana has no sales tax. So you can live in Nevada and be s resident to avoid (state) income tax. Open a Montana business and avoid sales tax on purchases, specifically cars.

    behexen250 I have over 40 boxes throughout the shops and locks only keep out honest people. You can find used US General boxes at a reduced price as well. You are only paying for the name and a considerable mark up for the tool truck driver when you buy off the truck. There is absolutely zero argument justifying the exorbitant cost of tool truck boxes. And FYI SnapOn used boxes do not carry any warranty. Sorry but that’s the truth listed on their website.

  • @truckerpeterose

    @truckerpeterose

    5 жыл бұрын

    behexen250 They are on average about 10% heavier than a comparable Homax or US General and about .07 thicker in certain panels. Certain boxes have some considerably more thickness in the lower gussets but no more that about 15% on average. We have done many measurements and comparisons and 10% better is just a good approximation. I have boxes in the shops 15 + years old and still going strong. Side by side they do not offer 7-12X more value as they do cost.

  • @denoftools

    @denoftools

    5 жыл бұрын

    @behexen250 You have a great attitude on use vs cost and I just wish more people would understand that. But that said, the snap on boxes have proven to be one of the easier boxes to break into, there are several videos on YT showing how to do it. Also SO specifically states that warranty is for the original owner only and is not transferable. While you may be able to get support $2,500 is a lot to gamble on it. And before you say "Well I've never had a problem" I have been contacted by over 1k guys who have had SO refuse to honor their "lifetime warranty".

  • @truckerpeterose

    @truckerpeterose

    5 жыл бұрын

    behexen250 I am not bashing them, simply stating the cost to value ratio is not consistent to justify the markup. I love all tools and still overpay for tools I don’t need. I have almost every brand of tools available and none of them stand out in quality or performance. Anyone can spend as much or as little as they want, that’s their business but I don’t buy into the fact that tool truck tools or boxes are offering anything unique or superior. You can get equivalent quality at a fraction of the price. Everyone has good and bad experiences with all brands of tools. SnapOn , Matco and MAC are modern day milk man.

    I wish I could weigh my tool box. I guess it depends on your situation in your shop, I move my box almost daily and it weighs a shit ton. 1600 pounds dry, and it's got about 75k in tooling in it. I doubt the 6000lb bridge crane at the shop will lift it. If you are gonna do it for 40 years and you care about your box and enjoy it then spend big money. To me my box is my office, it and my tools are something I take a lot of pride in. You are going to spend more time with your coworkers and your box than your family. If you are just starting out, are a home gamer, or never have to move your box there is nothing wrong with going cheap. Do what is best for you, not what someone else tells you is best for you. And if you can't pay for it in cash you cannot afford it.
