80's Kraft Holiday Commercials

Ойын-сауық

These commercials aired during ABC's presentation of Jim Henson's "The Christmas Toy" on December 6th, 1986. All of the fatty foods and cheesy narration manage to perfectly sum up what Christmas was like in the 80's. Also features promos for "John Grin's Christmas" and "The Perry Como Christmas Special".
EDIT: All of the commercials from this special have been posted in higher quality in 80's Commercials Vol. 962: • 80's Commercials Vol. 962

The Cheez Whiz fruit dip isn't as bad as I thought. The apple sauce tones down the strong taste of Cheez Whiz and it doesn't taste too cheesy overall. Mix 1/3 cup apple sauce (I think sweetened) 1/4 cup chopped pecans, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, dash nutmeg with 8oz (jar?) of melted CheezWhiz. Serve with apples and pears.

Velveeta gets a bad reputation but the reason it melts easily and consistently is due to an added emulsifying agent - usually sodium citrate. Without emulsifiers, the cheese would split in to proteins and oil like when you try to melt natural cheeses in to a sauce.

@@magiccitymama1620 Exactly. And plenty of people eat their apple pie with a slice of chedder cheese in it. The salty sweet combo is nothing new, and you see it all over the place today, ie salted caramel chocolate bars, and yet people act like it was gross back then but it wasn't. What I like about this food is it's not snobby and nobodys getting their panties in a twist about the nine million things they refuse to eat because they're gluten-free lacto-ovo vegan and don't eat processed sugar and is that cheese organic and locally purchased and blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

I remember these commercials even back in the 70s - they were like a Holiday tradition because they were a number of Kraft sponsored TV speciails. It just seemed to be part of the holidays.

The ex of someone I know was half-Italian and his family ate pizza and pasta for Christmas dinner. Apparently it’s commonplace in Italy. Also my ex-friend’s adopted parents hosted a community Christmas lunch with the church they ran, which meant having their Christmas on Boxing Day and they didn’t want to be doing with making two Christmas turkey dinners so they would have nibbles instead. Not everyone has a big roast dinner on Christmas Day.

I love these commercials-- highly entertaining, for sure! Most of these are tasty dishes, and I couldve gotten away with making them in the 80s but I think my guests would run out screaming if I served them applesauce and Cheese Whiz! :)
