80's Commercials Vol. 957

Ойын-сауық

These commercials aired on TBS on December 3rd, 1985
1. "Miracle On 34th Street" Commercial Bumper (Brought to you by Pillsbury and Nuprin)
2. Pillsbury Microwave Pizza (Not endorsed by the doughboy? That means this probably wasn't good...)
3. Nuprin (Little. Yellow. Different)
4. Birds Eye (Bamboo Shoots? What am I, a freakin' Panda? Also whatever he said at the end about corn got cut off by TBS)
5. Scrabble People
6. Promo for "Bulls Vs Kings" (Michael Jordan's second season in the NBA. At the time of this game he was recovering from a broken foot that made him miss most of the 85-86 season)
7. "Miracle On 34th Street" Commercial Bumper
8. Uno
9. Dial
10. Pillsbury All Ready Pie Crusts
11. Little Debbie Snack Cakes (With Rich Little)
12. Tylenol
13. Promo for "The Naked Prey" and "The Silencers"
14. Walt Disney Home Video (We didn't actually own any of the VHS tapes seen in this commercial but we definitely rented them at the time [and maybe copied a few shh!] and were seen in seen the family section of almost any video store for years after this)
15. United States Virgin Islands
16. Clairol Ultress (With Linda Evans)
17. Commodore Plus 4 Computer (This was originally released in 1984 and intended to be a spinoff of the Commodore 64 for people who weren't primarily interested in gaming on a PC. It was a huge flop and was discontinued in 1985 in favor of promoting the C64 and 128 computers. It was available for years afterward through liquidators like this commercial)
18. Promo for "They Came To Cordura" and "Flight To Holocaust" ("Flight to Holocaust" is a 1977 made-for-TV disaster movie about a passenger plane that accidentally crashes into the side of a skyscraper. It seems to have been based on the incident in 1945 where a B-25 accidentally crashed into the Empire State Building, but needless to say...this probably hasn't been seen on TV much since 9/11)
19. Comtrex (All you need is Comtrex. That's all. Nothing else! SLEEP!)
20. Pillsbury Crusty French Loaf (That sound you hear is Peter Sellers turning over in his grave)
21. "Gone With The Wind" on VHS (This was the first VHS release of this film and retailed for $90. In somewhat of a coincidence...Ted Turner, the owner of TBS, is sort of obsessed with this movie and later bought the film and TV rights)
22. Commodore 128 Computer
23. Clorox (I'm dreaming of a bleach Christmas)
24. Nutrasweet
25. Vlasic Zesty Dill Pickles
26. Remington Micro Screen Shaver
27. Zenith (Yes, there was a time when a 27 inch 4x3 TV was actually considered a big-screen TV)
28. Promo for "American Caesar"
29. CNN Business Watch Intro
30. The Hartford (If TV had been invented during the era of Vaudeville I'd imagine that this is what most commercials would have been like)
31. CNN Business Watch
32. Promo for "Me & My Robot" on CNN (Nearly 40 years later and we're STILL waiting for robots to replace us and take over the world. C'mon robots, pull it together!)
33. Sylvania Super Set
34. Pillsbury's Best Cookie Dough
35. Taster's Choice Maragor Bold Coffee
36. CNN News Watch
37. Sears (With the voice of Tom Bosley)
38. Longines (For reference, a $550 watch back then would be $1500 today adjusted for inflation. I don't know if they sell an equivalent to this watch today but Longines watches are still very expensive)
39. Green Giant Niblets Corn (Maybe this was the corn he was talking about in the Birdseye commercial)
40. Miller High Life
41. Happy Holidays from Freedlander
42. Promo for "Bulls Vs Kings" (The Kings won this game 131-118)
43. "Miracle On 34th Street" Commercial Bumper

Pilsbury- The amount of Pilsbury commercials contained in this volume really pleases me. With the exception of the Pizza commercial, It makes me smile hearing the Doughboy's giggle more than once with each of those commercials I see. Vlasic Zesty Dill Pickles- The glasses that the cashier man's wearing look too small for his face while the glasses the kid's wearing has lenses that look like they can be used to fry eggs on a sidewalk.

The two men in the Hartford commercial are Bob and Ray, a famous comedy duo that had their own TV show during the '50s. The man on the right is Bob Elliott, father of comedian Chris Elliott.

Remember those old style VCRs you rented from the video store with the opening on the top? Weren’t they like $10 a week or something? Yeah, my older brothers figured out pretty quick how to copy the tapes, too. I know we had Back to the Future & Goonies because I watched Goonies every day after school in the 2nd grade. My older brothers are 5 & 9 years older than me, so I can imagine the kind of stuff they must have rented. I think we had 2 VCRs by 1986. The first one was probably $400 or $500 and then I guess they came down to about $250.

Great set of commercials. The date of these spots were 4 days before my birth which I found pretty cool.

I may be mistaken, but is that Tia Carrere on the left at 7:07? Also, who else sees Linda Evans and immediately thinks "MITCHELL!"

The race car at 19:35 is the #4 Penske March / Cosworth of Danny Sullivan. Interestingly, he would win the 1985 Indy 500 driving the #5, instead of #4, but I can't find any reason for the number switch.

It's simple really! The Commodore Plus 4 had "Sohf-ware" packages and not "Sawf-ware"! That's why it failed! But BAMBOO SHOOTS? Whut?
