'£80 million is not a lot of money': Meet the agent for billionaire house-hunters | Times Reports

Gary Hersham, 70, founder of the agency Beauchamp Estates (pronounced Beecham), is the go-to agent for anyone arriving in London with tens of millions to spend and a taste for brass terrazzo and bookmatched marble. His is a world lit by chandeliers and bathed in gold leaf. One where every towel is monogrammed with the name of the house. There are wellness suites, salons, panic rooms, bulletproof wine cellars, and walls dripping with museum-worthy art.

I won’t be surprised that the owner has more than three grand estate. This one is in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in London. The only way to achieve what you wanted to have is to take over Buckingham Palace.

Well for about the same cost you could move the building to a large estate in the country - plus then you'd have an empty plot in London worth $100M plus inflation.

3:52 You misremeber the segment. A polite "Don't waste your time." is the reply to the potential buyer. The shocked "within reason" was towards the interviewer. I presume she asked something obtuse, like missing the point of the role of the agent. Note that the sales dynamics is different here than it is when plebs like us sell and buy a house. Unique houses have high variance in the perceived value, so the agent tries to find the highest bidder without disclosing the bids or listing the lowest acceptable price. Once a bid is "within reason", both parties can get involved in detailed research and negotiations. Tldr, high amount of low bids, and lenghty dealings with each potential buyer.

Also all of the furniture and interior details are things that can be easily changed... for hundreds of thousands at most, not tens of millions. What cant be changed is location and size. yeah? and how well did history of such destructions worked out for us? Russian revolution? Did it bring something better or just a sea of blood and misery for all? Or maybe China with the Cultural Revolution and 60 million killed and starved to death? Who else destroyed entire systems of capitalism and government? Maybe the Nazi Germany? Maybe Cuba? Venezuela? North Korea? Idiots always want to destroy because it's easy. They never manage to build anything worthwhile in its place though.

To be replaced by what? Rich and poor, without an envious middle full of superiority over being better that the poor, but contemptuous of the rich who they deem have too much. When all squirrels have an equal larder of acorns to overwinter on then perhaps humans will copy them. Nature isn’t that way, neither are we.

That's not what he said though... He said it wasn't much for that house. Which is a different thing entirely. 80m is an awful lot of money, but it isn't a lot of money for lots of things. For example if you wanted to build a skyscraper in New York, or if you wanted to start an electric car company etc. etc. context is important, you're just looking to be outraged.

When I look at these incredibly expensive homes they don't seem to live up to the asking price. At that price point I want first of all a very special location and specacular view. It could be ocean, Swiss mountains, maybe city. Most city views aren't exciting, especially now that the cities have been ruined by liberals who won't enforce law.
