I usually find mine from sellers - Palm Street, Etsy, even Ebay. You just have to wait for the right price or for it to show up. Worst case, the famous nurseries, more expensive, but you can be confident the linage is solid. We also need to talk about the "Pokemon" aspect where you feel like you need them all.

You’re so right about the “Pokemon” aspect of collecting plants! 🌿 Gotta catch 'em all, right? 😉 And yes, those famous nurseries are usually reliable but can be pricey. Thanks for sharing your sources! 🌱

I’ve sworn off bargain plants. I’ve rehabbed every bargain I’ve ever found. I’ve got trusted vendors now, so I have to wait until they get them and I can afford them. 💚💚💚

So have I, unless they are less than 5 euros. I am a very anxious person, so I don't need the added sense of failure when these plants die right after purchase.

I found a few seed websites in Europe and got some interesting seeds. Mixed results tbh but I was surprised to nab a few anthurium seeds (sprouted) that were very cheap compared to what I find from aroid sites. Worth searching for seed sellers that do a broad range of tropical plants or cacti or whatever. More of a long game but affordable and kind of interesting. I also found Facebook groups a bit unpleasant and I don’t use social media any more. In some ways I’m glad though because I don’t get as much of a hit of temptation to buy things on a whim! Thanks Memo for this really helpful advice - much appreciated

You also get browser extensions that notify you when an item is on sale. So if you know of a place that has plants in stock that you can't bring yourself to buy full price, you can set it up to notify you if the price drops at any point :)

I price check the big online nurseries against Etsy and Palstreet sellers, against local nurseries, and look at local grocery/big box store prices. I don’t get things all the time, but I've learned who has what kind of plant for the cheapest. Some plants are cheaper online, some in nurseries, some in grocery/box stores. My local grocery story has gorgeous calathia and alocasia for cheap. Local box store had (rare) dieffenbachia and philo brazil cheap. Nursery had super cheap fishbone cactus and scandapsis. Online had super cheap neon pothos and Billietiae (a half grown one, not a tiney little thing). I love looking for deals and saving money. :)

Well, my general wishlist is about all plants I like in groups. The second one is only of the plants I want right now, or next. The third one is about plants I killed and need to replace. When I see the low price or the fact that something is in stock, I go spontaneous and buy it. The size also matter. It feels like, I can't do it another way for this stage of my journey.

These are great tips--it only recently occurred to me to have a separate checking account for all things plant. We can't import here in Australia, and no swaps locally where I am in a very rural part of Australia. I mainly use the FB groups...but again you need to be really selective, some are All About the Drama...no thanks! There's one main good one and a few smaller ones. And a few really good online shops.

Hey Menno, i got a question since you're an expert on Liquid Gold Leaf fertilizer 😊! How much ml. of fertilizer do you use for Semi-Hydro (like the Soil Ninja semi hydro mix)? And do you feed your Alocasia's more fertilizer because they are hungry plants? Cheers 🌱✌️

Great question! For Liquid Gold Leaf fertilizer in semi-hydro, I use about 0.5-1 ml per litre of water. Alocasias do love their nutrients, so I tend to feed them a bit more frequently. Cheers! 🌱✌️

I do have a "Plant Guy" and when he posts his new merchandise I get notified. I can even call him and ask him to hold one for me. Yes, I'm a 🤓 geek for plants 🪴 😄 Great point about doing some homework on a wanted plant. Also there are many people getting away from plant collecting now that they have returned to work and have less time on their hands so caring for a large collection becomes daunting.
