@@map7049 First LP came same year. Early Haggard was more death metal, but later is definitely symphonic metal. Well at least for me.

@@anwerso You're right, of course Haggard it's symphonic metal, in my opinion the most symphonic metal band with Therion (in terms that the symphonic part is much more important to the song than, for instance, in Nightwish, and I love Nightwish). It's just that the symphonic parts are different, Therion and Haggard are more like classic music, while Nightwish is more like a movie soundtrack, and Epica is between the 2 sides (classic and soundtrack)... By the way, another amazing symphonic band nobody knows is Penumbra. I suggest all of you to listen to theis albums "Seclusion" and "The last bewitchment"; absolute masterpices (gothic symphonic metal)...

Therion were the pioneers of orchestra thing in Metal. I cant say if they were the very 1st to do those massive collaborations in heavy genre but surely they influenced the field we have now.

Yeah, THERION, best band in the world! All symphonic metal comes from them... Hope you react to more songs... "To Megatherion", "Via Nocturna", "Abraxas", "Blood of Kingu", "Adulruna Rediviva", "Land of Canaan" (just some few examples)... Best metal soprano, Lori Lewis, and best guitar player in symphonic metal, Kristian Niemann... And, of course, best composer, Mr. Christopher Johnson... Greetings from Spain...

They are all caught up in Floor (which IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!) and all ignore Therion! Therion ARE absolutely AMAZING with everything they did. If you did not listen to Therion your life was useless. PERIOD.

THIS is the song that got me into symphonic metal.. My bf's mom was listening to this when she was making lunch and I wanted to know EVERYTHING about Therion. I was 17 years old and in awe with her music taste. :))

I don't believe it !!! Finally the pioneer Therion. Christopher Johnson is the father of symphonic bands. There was no other band doing that and the inspiration was Celtic Forst. There was not even the experimentalism of The Third and Mortal. Other symphonic bands are Haggard (the second best band of the genre), Rhapsody and Thy Majesty (both from Italy). Massive orchestra because Christopher's writing style is based on Richard Wagner and without a doubt Wagner was an egolatra. That's why it sounds so pretentious ... and wonderful. Most symphonic bands prefer the baroque and Nightwish prefers move score.

Next can be "Therion - Son of the Sun" Live Gothic DVD (2007)? :3

I remember buying Theli in my early teens on pure chance and having my brains implode. When Vovin was released I waited outside the record store to get my hands on a copy. Not enough reaction channels dive into Therion which always confused me considering how many are into Nightwish and how the Nightwish army moves around like a swarm of locust (in a positive way 🙂). A good percentage of them should be into Therion?

Like a lot of people have said Therion was the pioneer of symphonic metal and is interesting to note that Christopher Johnson was a big fan of classical and Wagner and if you dig up Wagner operas you can see how metal that guy was (the composition, the storytelling, how "heavy" some of it sounds) so someone was going to link up the two together sooner or later.

Far from being a favorite of mine. I am a big Therion fan. I think that if you're already into metal, begin with stuff from Theli (their breakout album) : To Mega Therion, Invocation Of Naamah, In The Desert Of Set, Cults Of Shadow, Nightside Of Eden. I hate so much the comparison with Nightwish. They're not at all alike. Anyway, have fun on your Therion journey, hope for you that it's not the end of it ;)

Anything from the Live Gothic show is fire. In my opinion, it is the best Therion show with the best line-up of the band. Ginnungagap or Son of the staves of time are particularly good in that show^

Therion was way better in their death metal days in the early 90s.
