8 steps to GPS Position Hold for an FPV drone

You can upgrade you FPV drone with a GPS Position Hold in 8 steps. It’s really simple and requires you to only buy a good GPS module with magnetometer, use INAV and configure this and that. Probably the most important part is to correctly position the GPS and magnetometer. Too close to wires or motors and the magnetic field will influence the readout. Instead of holding position, drone would do “toilet bowling” and fly away.

As one Dad to another, I switched to iNAV after watching Pawel, put his KZread presentation on hold, while he calmly and patiently talked to his child that had interrupted him. My father always said know your vendor, and this was an indication to me that there are good people behind iNAV. I installed it on a quad and a fixed wing and I’m amazed at how simple the transition from Betaflight was. Thank you for everything!

@@FPVUniversityhi spy so im very confused with the magnetometer orintation. My module has no direction signs. So i will just install it exactly as seen in inav. Or does the red arrow have to be pointing forward at all times. For example do I set it up in inav axactly likr it is in real life. Or do i set it up with the arrow pointing forward at all time in inav the littpe red arrow
Even though I'm pretty comfortable with GPS setup on INAV, I ALWAYS get value from Pawel's videos!
Thank you, thank you thank you! I'm on iNav 7.0 and I followed each step and it worked a treat. Stopped my toilet bowling and RTH worked beautifully.

I have to say this as well that the BN-880 is the best bang for your buck. It's cheap, always reliable and always had same or better reception as with other modules even indoors so it is sitting on almost (5 of 7) all my INAV models.
I tried so hard last year. I will try again. This is the one feature I want from the commercial world.

I see not many have made videos to explain on how to make the RTH more configurable. I am trying to figure out how to make the first trigger of going up very fast then return at a much greater speed. I will be flying in HUGE waves and want to be able to hit the RTH or get a failsafe and the drone shoots up in the air then returns home before battery dies. The way its now its way to slow :-D Im sure there are commands to get this done.. Thank you! @@FPVUniversity
As Tina says... You're simply the best ! THX
Suggestion for tutorial on tuning for smooth quad waypoints. Now inav is very nice with waypoints in fixed wing but with quads it’s like a drunk sailor between points unless you go very slow.

Hi! I would like to know more about position hold. Can he serve like a panic button ? Does he recover from any angle ? Does he stop fast enought even with high velocity ? Like during a sbang ?
Wow thank you! I have been avoiding fpv drones because you "can't" let off the controller. avata seems to be only drone, but now when i heard of this im going to build my own! Let see how it goes :D

Ty Sir. Will this hold mode save fpv from crashing when done bad piloting ? Life when flying in acro and then switch to hold mode to recover controll and save fpv?
Very cool! are there any BNF or RTF drones for sale with INAV and these features installed?
I have a question, is there a mode that you can implement where if the drone moves, it will stay in the position you moved it to? Like a constant position hold? Similar to that of a high end dji drone?
Brilliant video, Pavel!!! Thank you so much, I had no idea that position hold was possible on fpv quads. Would you recommend it on a 7“ Longrange build?

Hello , thx for this great Video , I wanted to ask if I could get in Touch with you anyhow to ask some specific questions about inav ??
So you have to combine position hold with altitude hold, ie position hold only fixes lat and long, not altitude? The disarm works automatically, mentioned at 6:20? Thanks for the info, useful video.
I have 7 inch quad with inav 5.1 installed on fc nd in computer.. im a newbie can you help me tune or do you have any preset for it
Where do you get your Coax cable from? The cable that you use in your quad. Can you message me and let me know please?
in the modes tab does the position/alt hold require angle mode as well to work?
Hey Pavie! Can I use missions made in INAV 4.x use in INAV 5.1?
Thanks for the video. It works great on my INAV builds. One suggestion maybe for another video: I have read that for FCs with no SDA SCL pads it may be possible to remap UART3 to I2C because this pin on the chip can both(?) Is this correct and how is it done?

I have a question, I have tested position hold and alt hold, and in most cases, it worked fine but sometimes I had a situation when drone started to circle around position and these circles started to bigger and bigger and I needed to turn off position hold and turn on again after which it usually stabilizes. do you know a possible reason for this? could you please suggest steps how to fix it?
Hi, the GOKU GM10 MINI V3 GPS supported by iNav? It is twice as cheap as the Matek.
Hi Pawel build a 5 inch quad with inav Using hglrc f722 flight controller Hglrc gps First I put drone in angle mode after at a height of 1 meter put inav position hold mode and it's goes goes up in very fast speed of and after certain level it's get stable I want to stable my drone at the same height at angle mode Pls give suggestions
This is really great information. I have a question, is the matek m8q 5883 just really good? so it doesn’t need to be mounted in a mast to avoid compass interference ? Will it get out of calibration often since it’s so close? I just have seen so many people use a mast to avoid compass interference issues. Struggled with it in the past myself.

lol there are so many I nav RTH fail videos. Commercial drones have surpassed the DIY Community. Need an example Amazon had hundreds of kits and parts a few years ago. Now you would be hard pressed to build 5 drones with unique internals on amazon. Guess if you like having a drone that's the same as the other guys drone you could save yourself hours, that translates to dollars and mistakes that also translates to dollars, by buying a commercial drone that fits your needs. If your need is a Drone that is equal or better than commercial drones you would need to start with goggles that are not "analog" and 4k capable video feed there goes 600 dollars or more (no drone parts included.) want to fly a mile away? Well there's another couple hundred dollars. still (no drone parts included.) now to run the video you might want a vista or an air unit. lol more commercial parts about 200 to 300 each still (no frame, flight controller, gps or motors.)
