8 Most Common Reasons a Ram Pump Stops [How to Fix a Stopped Pump]

The ram pump can operate 24/7 365 if it is setup correctly. There are several things that can keep the pump from cycling. Your Ram Pump is likely not broken it just needs to have a few things adjusted in the install. If your ram pump is not working here are the 8 most common reasons that stop the pump from pumping water:
1. Issues with the screen intake 0:39
2. Water Flow Rate Issues 1:18
3. Drive Pipe Length 2:31
4. Mismatched Drive Pipe 3:12
5. Minimum Head Pressure (Water Drop) 3:57
6. Debris in the Pump 4:24
7. Back Pressure Loss (Very common) 5:15
8. Delivery Pipe Siphon 6:31

    Nice video and presentation. Page 6:00 if this is an insufficient back pressure issue, how about hold the output valve from fully open but just open to artificially make up a back pressure and wait until the delivery hose fills up before fully open it? This is an alternative way appears dumb however can solve the start up problem. Instead, feed the output valve directly to an inverted U circuit with the u turn point nearly as high as the delivery end point. The disconnected hose will reattach to the end of the inverted U circuit. This can develop back pressure much sooner than a time taken to fill the entire delivery hose.

    I find your ram pump videos fascinating. I wish I had an actual need for one, and would buy it from you. I have an off grid summer cabin with a gravity water system with 3 1-inch hoses running around 300 feet up the hill into the pool in the brook. My intakes are quite similar to the ones you are using. Great work on your part!

    Hey Seth, been loving your videos for years. I'm not far away in southern Virginia. I've been working on a ram pump in scraps of free time, and I've finally got it mostly installed. It's a 1-1/4" pump (I spent ages building my own, and after that experience, I highly advise buying the pump for less money, prebuilt by Land to House) and 1-1/4" drive pipe as well, about 60ft of drive pipe for a ~10ft fall (6x vertical fall per the excellent Clemson LG Press article, Homemade Hydraulic Ram Pump for Livestock Water). Fingers crossed to reach some plum trees about 70ft above the pump. So far, I've been able to get the pipe to cycle on its own even up to maybe about 50 times; but it eventually does stop. I am siphoning over a dam, and after watching this video, I'm thinking it's the siphon effect you described. I'll trying siphoning over into some kind of catchment, and drive from there :) I want to add that I recently had a fun experiment which I thought you'd appreciate. I tried to start the pump (from the siphon) while the pond was frozen over. Obviously, that did not work because the ice shielded the surface of the pond from the atmospheric pressure needed to push the water into the siphon. So I banged at the thick ice with a shovel until my hands couldn't take it anymore. I managed to open up about a 6" diameter hole above the intake manifold. I tried it again, but still no luck! So I guess either the siphon needed more surface area exposed or there was some other problem. But it was fun to experiment.

    Hi Seth. I love your experiments and teaching in the ram pump setup, etc. I have a problem I can’t solve. 1.5 inch pump, 12 feet head, 1.5 in delivery pipe of about 60 feet to the stand pipe, another 30 to the silt collector, another 30 to the screened source. Delivery pipe goes up about 40 feet, and is full of water so at least 10 lbs back pressure. (Not measured). No obvious ridges in pvc drive pipe or obvious leaks. No air when i purge the waste valve and yet I can’t get it to start, even with delivery pipe closed off. Any suggestions? How can I tell if there is air in the pipe even though I purge it for a minute with no obvious air coming out?

  • @synapticaxon9303
    @synapticaxon93032 жыл бұрын

    AHA, back pressure drop! I took the delivery pipe/hose off when troubleshooting so I have zero back pressure currently. I also abandoned the 5 gallon bucket catchment on the drive pipe when I took the pipe there to lengthen the drive pipe. I may have to revisit that now that the uniseal was delivered. Slightly concerned there is something stuck in the inline check valve but I left both valves open last night when I gave up and maybe it has rattled loose by now. On the drive pipe intake, I ended up using an extra trash pump foot valve screen cylinder thing and the 1-1/4" pipe slides right into the barb connector.

    Will using metal drive pipes help with low-head? I was thinking the creek is pushing on the PVC pipes trying to send them downstream and they're wobbling around with the pressur ewaves, I tried to secure them with random logs, but that a really solid drive pipe like galvanized will help with the incompressible water property that this device exploits. That'd be a good video, comparing metal drive pipes with PVC, to complement the video comparing PVC with polypipe.

  • @synapticaxon9303
    @synapticaxon93032 жыл бұрын

    Have you had issues with hand-tightened PVC fittings on the ram pump, you know, tearing it down in the creek and reassembling? I've had some issues with that coupler with the big o-ring loosening due to the thumping of the pressure wave and tension left or right from the drive pipe in a snaking/meandering creek. I just wonder how much small leaks in the PVC fittings like that impact the cycling of it, or if the focus should be elsewhere. Are you using teflon tape on all threaded connections (i.e. the ones with the o-rings), or only the other threads?

    Hey Seth I have a question. Let's say you have a float valve on the delivery end to keep a tank from over flowing. Will the ram pump start back as needed or will it need to be manually restarted everytime?

    Seth, I built a ram pump based off of your design. I have a spring that feeds a 55 gallon drum. It then comes from about 6 inches above the bottom of the drum 50 feet dropping 8 and a half feet. It enters the ram pump. All of the pipe is 1/2 inch pvc pipe. Exiting the pipe is 1/2 inch poly. It travels 100 feet with about a 45 ft rise. My problem is the pump runs about 30 minutes then stops. Oh the spring puts out about 2 gallons a minute. The flow completely fills the supply pipe of the barrel. Could you give me suggestions as to what is stopping it please.

    At 7:10 you say "As long as you don't have the delivery pipe end at the farthest point". What do you mean by that? My property is undulating so I have had to run the delivery pipe up one ridge, down into a ravine, and back up the next hill. I have successfully managed to get water to pump all the way to the end, so I don't THINK I have a siphon issue, but my RAM pump keeps dying. Right now I suspect either air bubbles getting into the drive pipe OR debris suck in the secondary valve. The waste valve will cycle a few times, sometimes even several times, and then it stops. When it cycles it is frequently "double-tapping" on each close. Any ideas?

    Is the minimum 2.5ft drop uniform for all the sizes of ram pump? Can your tiny 1/2" or 3/4" pump get away with less?

  • @LandtoHouse

    @LandtoHouse

    That input head pressure is typically the minimum for all sizes. You can slightly tilt the waist valve to the side and get by with just over 2' But it's unreliable.

    Can two ram pumps share the same delivery pipe, and is the diameter of that delivery pipe important? Late in the summer I don’t have enough water for my 1.5 inch pump but have plenty to run both during most of the year, so it makes sense to have one delivery pipe

  • @LandtoHouse

    One delivery pipe is fine for two pumps. Depending on how far you push water the size will be fine at 3/4" if you are going a long distance like 3000 feet you might want to step that size up.

    When i first got my pump from you it ran fine for 3 weeks. For some reason i can not get it to cycle now. the water comes out of the valve but doesnt "close". ive checked the flow and it is fine. I actually bought another valve but it has same issue. I can turn the pump over and it will click shut but not cycle. push it and then it just stays open again.

    Curious issue that occurs with a 1 1/4 ram pipe. It "double cycles" in quick succession, then will not cycle for 5-7 seconds. The issue goes away after a day or so of the pump running, and I'm assuming its from the extremely mild slope of my creek. I guess it could also be from air in the pipe working its way out, or debris in the pipe, but its really difficult to tell. It usually comes up after a heavy rain and my ram pump was completely submerged for an extended duration. If you know of this, or a quick fix, let me know! Specs: 1.25 inch pipe, 60 feet of 1.25 inch drive pipe (pvc), Just over 2.3 feet of drop

    That sounds very much like an air bubble that is stuck in the drive pipe. The pressure wave hits that bubble turns around and heads back to the pump. Then it pulls the bubble closer to the waste valve and does it again. The pause will oftentimes let the bubble go back up the pipe and the whole thing happens over again.

    I did figure it out. The ram pump would get silt pushed under it after a storm, and because of the mild slope of the creek, the raising of the pump made the drive pipe into a very slight "U" shape before it reached the pump. The pump then would settle in the silt due to the continuous cycling, and get back to level with the pipe.

    Hello Seth, please excuse my english, I use goole translator. I have a question about the ram pump. I've seen all your videos but I can't explain my problem. my flap valve doesn't really close, even though I have enough high pressure. If I tilt the pump and the valve closes, it no longer opens, even if I put the pump back up. I used a garden hose for the first test, could that be the reason? or did I use the wrong valve? Thank you for your answer

  • @LandtoHouse

    Hello. The drive pipe needs to match the waste valve size. The water source needs to be open to air. Garden hose is too flexible and does not work.
