8 II-V-I Variations Every Jazz Guitarist Needs To Know

Музыка

Unless you are totally new to jazz, I’m sure you are well aware that its most frequent recurring harmonic progression is the II-V-I. And for this reason we tend to spend a great portion of our practice time, both learning to comp and improvise over it. But did you know that the II-V-I comes in countless flavors? If so, are you proficient with all of them? If not, please read on….
In this lesson I cover 8 important II-V-I variations you will encounter in most jazz standards! In doing so I also give you several examples of where each variation can be found in several known standards. Finally, I list their best corresponding scales and demonstrate some chord voicings you can use if you are just getting started.

Thank you , what exactly is a Phrygian Dominant and Super Locrian? are they the same as a Diminished Dominant.?

The phrygian dominant is the 5th mode of the Harmonic Minor and the super locrian (a.k.a. altered dominant) is the 7th mode of the Melodic Minor. I used to play them but didn't really know them by name for a long time until I started teaching. (lol) On a different note I wanted to say I enjoyed your Latin tribute to Wes!!

hiya Richie If you don't mind me asking, what is the story behind your headgear? Maybe you've answered the same question in the past but I missed that. I wasn't going to bother asking, but I've seen a couple of other jazz guys wear similar and would just like to understand. Thanks.

This is a hand woven cap by a woman in the Peruvian Andes mountains. I purchased it when traveling there over 30 years ago. I started wearing it on my gigs and it became part of my image...it's my "mojo" (lol)

Why your D7 chord in Autumn Leaves doesn't contain the note D and still sound awesome!?!?! 😵

You don't need the root for a chord to sound good. The 3rd and 7th define the chord and imply the root.
