8 Hardtails Under $800 - 2020 Mountain Bikes

Спорт

This is the followup to my very popular 8 Hardtails Under $800 video that I made in 2019. All the mountain bikes featured in this video are 2020 models.
I also give an overview of some of the things you should be looking for and things you should avoid when buying your first mountain bike.
Spoiler alert, the bikes featured are:
Giant Talon 2
Diamondback Line
Vitus Nucleus
Marin Bobcat Trail
Marin San Quentin
Kona Lava Dome
GT Avalanche
Specialized Pitch & Rockhopper

Thanks for watching the video! There is no way I could have gotten all the bikes available. Some people have mentioned good ones in the comments. A lot of people bring up the Trek Marlin. It’s ok and Trek is a solid company. I just don’t like the XC style geometry or the limited tire width compatibility.

Just grabbed GT avalanche comp in the 29er! One of the only hardtails I could find this late in the season with the way bikes have been selling this summer ! The review really helped make my decision and sort through what entry level hardtails are worth looking into. Somebody stole my Haro HT and after having rode that on trails and road since 2013, I have to say I agree with you on the gearing. I want my next bike to be a 1x10 instead of a 3x8. I ended up having problems with it (especially if I ever let someone inexperienced ride it). Perfect timing for this video and by far the most informational one on KZread that I have found so far.

Down to Ride MTB I just bought the last hardtail under $1,000 in most of OKC. Almost everyone is sold out everywhere. Ended up getting a Fuji Tahoe 29 1.5 for $899 which was a steal if you ask me. I’m not sure if you know much about the bike shortage but it would make for an interesting video. I couldn’t get a vitus neclues or a GT avalanche online or in stores anywhere.

Shimano 1x10 drivetrain with clutch derailleur and 11/46 cassette, air fork, hollow BB axle, WTB i30 rims, and modern geometry with tappered HT and 66.5 deg HTA and routing for a dropper for $750. The thing - for me - about the Kona bike is: 1st u get a lifetime Warranty on all (except Carbon) Kona-frames & 2nd they offer it in Size S as 29" - vitus, gt, specialized & trek for example dont have this size or only with 27.5" wheels - makes it for all ppl under 170cm lookin for a 29er very interesting. It has a tapered Head Tube & the frame easily fits a 130mm travel fork. All in all (even if some parts or at least the fork needs to be upgraded) the geometry feels very good and the bike worth the money to me. More like a solid base than a ready to race bike - but what do u expect for this prize? Ordered it for 550€ (~600$) - since the Vitus isnt available for a while now & around 750€ - it was the best deal for me.

I bought the Giant Talon 3 (29) because the TREK marlin 5 was out of stock, here's my honest review as a beginner who had a lot of questions (you probably are too): -The bike looks beautiful, aesthetic wise, bike was larger than in the pictures when I got one that fit me. -The bike rides beautifully, front shifters can be smoother but rear shifters are very nice. -I ride it for long hours on mountains, grass, gravel etc for my KZread bike blogs, it does fine. -I brought the bike on a MTB trail and abused the hell out of it, I crashed and crashed as I practiced my MTB skills. After all the abuse, here's two apparent things: 1) The chain drops when I crashed two times, so it's not that big of a deal because it only dropped when I was stopped and my crash shaked the whole chain around. 2) The pedal is made of plastic and doesn't have the metallic nubs that more expensive bikes have, so every time I leaned too low and hit the floor with my pedals, it kind of shaves off the grips. What can be done to improve it? 1) Get metallic pedals 2) Install a dropper post if you intend to do some serious mountain biking. Overall satisfaction: Very satisfied. I bought the bike for $560 and it's worth every penny, considering the abuse I made it go through, it only had those two minor issues. A lot of beginners tend to give up the sport after their first time out on a trail and crashing left and right, so I would recommend getting an affordable hard-tail and outgrowing it with practice before moving onto $1000+ bikes. Check out the videos on my channel for reference, I'll put up a more "technical" MTB trail video soon.

One thing I think is worth mentioning with the Hook, Line, and Sync'r is the frame is only shared between the Hook and Line. If you can get your budget up to the Sync'r level you get boost thru axle on the rear and a tapered head tube which is well worth it in my opinion due to the better upgrade potential.

I've had the San Quentin 1 for a few weeks now and was stoked to get it for $830. It sold out of most online stores soon after I got it. Anyway, the pics on the Marin site specifically for the 1 are just the 1. Each "trim level" has its own color scheme with the 1 getting two options. On the tires, they apparently changed from Schwalbe to Vee after those pics were done. I'm super happy with what I got. The fork isn't great, but it's not worthless either. Sure, I look forward to upgrading it, but I've been okay with it for now. The pedals seem really cheap. I didn't even bother installing them, opting instead for the alloy flats I had already. I also had a dropper post and lock on grips that I just installed from the get go. It's definitely an upgrade platform, but still good fun out of the box. I have no regrets with my purchase.

Last year I bought the Kona Fire Mountain for my son, which is the 27.5” version of the lava dome. I got it off the floor as a demo with some scuffs for 575$ no biggie, we are just going to bash it down the trail. Put some nice pedals, grips and converted to tubeless and that thing rides great! On paved trails you NEVER run out of gears up or down and it’s a very solid although heavier frame. I prefer this to my much more expensive Big Honzo, for pavement riding. The fork is weak though, and I’m debating whether or not it’s worth upgrading. Also thinking about adding a dropper, I put a dropper on the cinder cone that my wife rides it’s a 27.5”, and it transformed that bike into a shredder. I LOVE MY KONAS!

  • @Flyanb

    3 жыл бұрын

I would not recommend that for a trail bike, in stock form, it is a great bike for paved trails and town riding, but not off road. I ordered a Roxshox Judy fork for it about 1&1/2 months ago, that will dramatically improve performance but it’s adding 400$ to total cost, and probably dropper next spring another 400$. I would recommend the Big Honzo for trail riding and light downhill. The + tire and the roxshox lyric fork and dropper seatpost makes it very capable bone stock but cost upfront hurts more at $2,300. US still a great deal for a ride that NEVER lets me down or leaves me without smiles. I will maybe buy another one in the spring for my wife. The 2.8” tire is sooooo much fun!

Phabeon Dominguez the Kona Kahuna or Cinder cone is a great place to start it will safely teach you about what you might want in the future. They are the same components just Kahuna is 29” wheel and cinder cone is 27.5” I bought cinder cone for my wife and put pedals and grips and KS lev dropper post on it and that bike is fantastic. If you want, the Honzo is a great bargain it’s essentially those other bikes upgraded with some better components for a little more$ I bought for me the big honzo dL they used to be priced at 2300$ but MUCH nicer everything, fork and bottom bracket, dropper and wheels and it has the 2.8-27.5” tire. That bike is soooo fun to ride, on the MTB trails. NOT fun on paved trails that’s when I ride the Fire MTN. Though I am upgrading that bike to make it more blue-green friendly with a front fork. My advice is buy more than you think you need because your skill will outgrow the cheaper bikes fast. If I had to do it again I’d go straight to the Honzo DL or the Big Honzo DL. The big honzo fatter tire is much more difficult around town to pedal but sooooo much more forgiving on the MTB trails. If you ride more pavement get the Honzo, more gravel or dirt or single track BIG HONZO FTW!!!! Buy once cry once I bought 4 bikes this year, ouchhhhh! All KONAS BTW, the nicest I bought was the process 134 DL for my promising 15 YO MTB racer son. That bike destroys everything it sees and asks for more, it rides sooo smooth, I am jealous ALLL the time. Maybe next year? I’m buying a WOZO fat bike for the winter soon, MN sucks in the winter and if you want to ride a full FAT tire is the only way to go. Good luck man, enjoy the process and know one size doesn’t fit all buy the tool for the job and don’t be afraid to go up a level or two initially you won’t regret spending more!

I wouldn’t discount the rockshox xc30, honestly it’s pretty nice if it works for your weight. Cheers for the vid.

Assuming the rotor setup on the Line is the same as the Sync'r, it should be 160 rear 180 front.

Lower end vitus sentier comes with inferior parts but a more desirable rear axel, giving it more scope for upgrades. 15x110 and 10x138 is a weird combo

I want to buy a LBS bike available at a shop in Houston Texas. Which of these bikes offers the best overall features and best overall quality of components? 2021 Kona Lava Dome ($750), 2021 Jamis Highpoint A2 ($850), 2021 Giant Talon 1 ($830) or 2021 Trek Marlin 7 ($850)? Note: how important are tapered headtubes, rear retailer clutches and thru axles?

The 2021 Vitus Nucleus just came out. Since you mentioned that you owned this bike in the past, can you compare the 2020 model to the 2021 range? I’m specifically curious to hear your thoughts about the 1x8 11-40 drivetrain one the 2021 VR.

I’m a fan of just about anything 1x. That’s interesting that they went with Box since they are not on of the two big “S” drivetrains. Looks like it goes to 42t which isn’t bad at all. It was only a couple years ago that nice drivetrains like the SRAM GX 11 speed only went to 42t. As an 8 speed, the jumps between gears will be kind of big but I think it will be usable. For comparison, Box also does an 11-50 with only 9 speeds.

Hey Phil, great video. I’m getting into the sport and picked up a Talon 2. It was in stock and available! Question. How about women’s bikes? What knowledge can you drop on me? I can’t find anything on KZread about them 😬

I really don’t know anything about them but my gut reaction is that it is just a marketing ploy. There are certainly plenty of women out there ripping on “men’s” bikes. I guess it depends on body type but really how different could they be. Anyway, Liv is the women specific brand associated with Giant so your dealer should have some of them.

Awesome video. If you could help me with something it would be much appreciated! I’m thinking about buying this used 2012 Kona splice hybrid bike. They say it’s in good condition and it looks clean, and to me, an inexperienced person in bikes, thinks it’s pretty good. It’s $400 CAD and I’m looking for a bike for fast on road riding and easy to go up hills, while also being able to take it off road. Would this be a good choice?

To be honest, I don’t know much about hybrid bikes. It sounds ok and Kona is good but used bikes can be risky.

I don’t know. Usually the biggest amount of weight come from budget, heavy components. But Hardtails are in general much lighter.
