Especially the keying part was very helpful. I've never really thought about the limitations when it comes to keying in DWG. It is a bit of a weird approach at first but I think it'll have quite a big impact on the work I do. Thank you.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:53 🎨 *Understand the importance of Color Space Transform (CST) when working with footage; transition from Rec.709 to DaVinci-wide gamut for corrections and back to Rec.709 at the end.* 03:09 🌈 *Use vectorscope and RGB values to ensure a balanced image; check if blacks are black and whites are white for balance.* 04:27 🖌️ *Utilize HSVSAT node for eight-bit footage; adjust gamma and gain to manage saturation, especially in less saturated areas.* 05:48 📸 *Work with well-exposed and balanced footage from the start; limitations exist when dealing with poorly shot material, so prioritize good exposure and white balance.* 10:57 🔑 *When keying in 8-bit footage, transform it to Rec.709 before applying the key; avoid unnecessary keying in 8-bit, and make small adjustments due to the limited flexibility of the format.* Made with HARPA AI

Color grading with 8-bit footage is like when an artist puts water on a canvas where the paint has almost dried - Surface colors smear and blend but only to a certain point before it gets messy.

Another great video. Hope you don't mind my endless questions. I have noticed that sometimes you use Ratio(for exposure and contrast)/balance/Hsv.Sat nodes, and other times you use Exp/Contrast/ balance/ Hsv.Sat ect. Is there any rhyme and reason to how you choose to label your primaries?

My camera is 8 bit but supports several profiles, like standard and flat. Would you recommend using flat and then color grade, or just use standard and use that as a starting point?

  • @runhaar1

I'd go flat and take it from there

This really depends on the scenes lighting situation and the "look" you are going for but also what "flat" and "standard" actually means with a dedicated camera or application you are using on a phone. PRACTICE the technique of getting it right before hitting the record button because that's where paint (profile/colors) hits the canvas (sensor). Color grading will never replace the paint brush or the artist using it. Master this and you can make more with less.
