That british airway Flight 9 is a very unique case. I watch the episode. The smoke was from a nearby volcano eruption in Indonesia and it seem the plane entered an area filled with volcano smoke. They made it back, do not worry. Everyone survived. They were on the way to australia.

I was a teacher who lived near DFW when the Delta 191 crash occurred; I was also on the regular blood donor list for Dallas County. It was nearly the end of summer break, and I remember distinctly that I was standing in our backyard that day, watching the black clouds rolling around and thinking, "This is weird weather. I bet a lot of planes are going to get backed up for a while." Then, I heard our phone ringing inside the house, and when I went inside (the era of landlines hanging on the kitchen wall with a long cord), it was the blood calling me in for an emergency donation. I hopped in my car and started racing to the center, and when I turned on the car radio and heard the news, I knew why they were calling-gave my pint that day, I hope to God it helped someone.

RIP Jerry Chandler (1948-2019). He was one of the best -- and among the most knowledgeable -- aviation reporters in the industry He's absolutely right when he says, "if there is one crash ... that made things safer, because we learned from it, it was Delta 191." It had the biggest impact on airline safety in at least a decade. Of course it's also true that we can, and should, learn from every crash -- no matter how big or small -- as long as we have the resources to figure out what went wrong and, if possible, how to prevent if from happening again.

Delta 191 was preceded 10 years earlier by another microburst crash-Eastern 66 at JFK Airport in New York (not sure if this program has ever outlined that crash). Those two crashes led to wind shear detection on planes and at airports.

Really sad that the German investigators somewhat cherry-picked the evidence to make it appear that ice on the wings had caused the crash of BEA 609, and then afterwards refused to admit that they made a mistake and continued to blame the Captain. Even after the British PM had exonerated the Captain of any responsibility, the German investigators still held that he was responsible and the airline never re-hired the Captain. So sad that his life was cut short by a heart attack a few years after 😥

In February 1991 I was coming back from Then West Germany and landing there at Dallas Fort Worth airport the plane as we came closer to the airport dropped 10 maybe 15 feet. First thing I thought was here is another flight 191. We landed ok but man made my heart stop for a second. Last time I flew on a plane was 1996 and haven't flown since. Haven't needed to be anywhere farther than I can drive, plus to damn expensive.

Volcanic ash is by far the worst thing you could possibly fly through. It sandblasts the paint off, scratches the cockpit windshield, damages compressor blades, and, worst of all, melts and turns to goop as it passes through the combustion stage of the engines only to re-solidify and jam the engine shaft, causing engines that ingest it to fail. That was why European airspace was grounded in 2010 when Eyjafallajökull blew, but it was Speedbird 9 that taught us this lesson.

In "Icy Wings: Arrow Air Flight 1285", there's more to it than that. They'd de-iced without letting Tower know, then moved into a take-off spot without Tower approval. The flight waited another 20-25 min until they were cleared to take off, but by then they had even more ice since the weather was so bad.

On this plane were Don Estridge, an American computer engineer who led development of the original IBM Personal Computer (PC), and thus is known as the "father of the PC revolution". His decisions dramatically changed the computer industry, resulting in a vast increase in sales of personal computers, thus creating an entire industry of hardware manufacturers of IBM PCs. Steve Jobs offered Estridge a multimillion-dollar job as president of Apple Computer but he declined. Estridge and wife Mary Ann were killed in the crash of Delta Air Lines Flight 191 at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on August 2, 1985. He was 48 years old. The Estridges were survived by their four daughters. At the time of his death, IBM ESD, which included the development and manufacturing of the IBM PC, PC DOS, PC LAN and TopView, had nearly 10,000 employees and had sold over a million PCs.
