8,000RPM Shifting My 540 Bigblock Corvette
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Watch the tach. 1st to 2nd shift is at 8,000RPM. 2nd to 3rd is at 7,500. And some people say a bigblock won't rev. This is a 700+hp 540CID Merlin block Chevy engine.

Nice you have great control for what seems like your flooring your 700hp engine. Most people would probably crash. Nice paint and interrior too 10/10
Dont know why this 14 year old video got suggested but it sure did make me smile

Seems legit
(Al continued) When the fan started to come apart from the repeated 8,000RPM jaunts, I replaced the fan with a non A/C fan. 5 blades instead of 7 and each blade dramatically smaller. It still runs cool as a cucmber. It never heats up at all. That's one of the best parts of the Merlin engine. Tha Camaro is the same way, although its always cooled okay. And the smaller fan frees up a bunch of HP too. Easier to spin.
Excellent control. I would have been too scared to stay on it like that.
@540merlin I'd just like to say this video brings tears of joy to my eyes! Love what you did.
Looks like loads of fun.
your corvette freaking rocks! thats my dream car and hopefully be able to turn it into a beast like yours! awesome vid!
I got a BIG smile on my face when you drove out on the road!
dude i love your vids keep em coming
sweet car, sweet burn, good driving skills! Love the vid
I couldn't see his smile but I could see it on his face, nice 😎👌
That looked like FUN!
@540merlin Thanks for answering my questions. Again awsome car, sounds great!
handled it like a boss. Well done mate
I love when your showing off and your whip does a fish tail. Everyone’s like “you okay?” I’m like “I’m just having fun” the look on their face though. Lol
These things had the longest hoods ever seemed like! Always felt like I was setting in the truck driving a giant hood but would make a killer drift car you basically are the tail end!
I kid you not, that has to be one of the greatest Vettes on youtube. That roar...
With someone who really knows how to drive this animal.I'll bet this thing could really come alive
Awesome video's man. Used your advice with speeding tickets and it actually worked here in Ontario :) You're pretty awesome man use their system to outsmart and come out on top I love it!
@540merlin just cause it doesn't sound like 8 doesn't mean it isn't actually reving 8 and that corvette is ballssss man very nice!
Man that looks soooo fun.
Hey Michael, I don't hit 8,000 very often. You have a very cool car and some great videos on your channel.

That's just got to be some kryptonite rotating group! Everybody I know who tried to go over 7500 RPM in any kind of Chevy seems to run out of oil at the bottom end! Sounds like dry sump time!

@@540merlin hmmmm... Used to be involved with an air cool diesel on a logging sky car that would tip 90°. We had a rotational oil pick up because that was the only way to keep the oil system primed up. Guys used to talk about putting restrictor orifices in their Chevrolet oil systems to keep the oil around the crank. Never had that experience myself. From what you're saying, I suspect you've done some of this before.
That thing sure sounds healthy! Greetings from a Vette owner in Mississippi!
Well put.
Cool, I appreciate your response and yes, I love driving 40 year old cars. I drive my neighbors 61 Impala almost daily and I love every second of it. Right now I have an old ford truck that's at 225,000 all original and it runs great.
very nice... that thing really does have some huge balls
Thanks TA.
Thhhhhannnnnk you!!!!!!!!!!! Those are awesome muscle car drawings you create. I'd love to be able to draw, even a little.
Right back at ya Winter!
Your Vette is incredible.
Love your car!
LMAO Dave, awesome slide there!!! Sounds great, gotta love those curves to the stingray! Sweet VID!
yea man!! looks like fun.
Very cool Dave! This time I'm in the back seat, I went to grab my you know whats, but I got pinned to the dam back window!
"Lag, lag, lag, wheel spin, shift" - that made me laugh. My Vette is the exact same, except for the lag part. More of a wheel spin, shift kinda thing...
This guy has the best car collection on KZread! To hell with imports and other overpriced exotics.
nice..! cool video gets u pumped up just watching it...
very nice corvette.
Nice and warm 8mpg chevy 540. So nice :)
Thanks 540merlin thats my baby!
Cool Jake.
@540merlin Definitely not a waste of time. Even if you didn't have motion video and only had a still picture up the sound alone is sheer madness! I think ill capture the sound and use it as my ring tone. Thanks merlin! Have a great week!
Thanks VAZ, good thing the road was 2 lanes wide there!
@Transane More info than we need. But thanks for sharing.
Hell yeah dude get it!!
this is my dream engine for my 68 chevy pickup!!
wow man nice one i wish you the best
The most MENACING sounding engine in my opinion it has the hum and crackle that I imagine all older muscle cars having 😍😍
I give the old guy credit, he;s out there gettin' some.
Thanks Hek.
@540merlin Thanks for answering! Regards from Serbia
Thats badass!!!
@LashoutUK Good stuff. Thanks.
Not a corvette guy but damn that looks like it’s a hell of a fun ride!!
302, thanks for the words. The 540 doesn't particularly kill tires - I mean it does, but its the broken tranny's, rear ends, and other assorted expensive parts that really hurts!
Couldn't see the tach but the sound more than made up for that. Lovely car sir - and a dab hand at driving too!
Scary to think about those giant motor parts moving at that speed! I feel like my 428 is going to self destruct around 4000 LOL. Awesome video
Yes it will live and rev high.....with a solid roller! It will be interesting to see what went bad, something on the top end or the lower end. Most likely something on the top end went bad. No biggie, been there done that-with a blown small block. Good luck on the rebuild!
That is badass! If my Dads Pontiac 455 blows up this is what we wanna throw in it
Aint NOTHIN as Glorious as a Big Block Chevrolet!!
awesome ride.. Love the camaro also ,, well built nice sounding 540's thumbs up...
haha love the nervously looking around for cops before you do some action haha
hell of a ride man.... dam wish i was in your shoes..
Thanks man
awesomeness
That lil swerve was straight sauce.
You sir... are a madman! And I'm completely jealous
the fun out weighs everything when you got the money!
What kind of cam profile are you running? I'm guessing somewhere around 270 at .050" intake and 280 at .050" exhaust?
Woaah! Nice! This one reves better than ours! haha 8000... wow! Love it!
Holy craperoni! 😮😮😮
Nice, when I build my next BB it will be a merlin motor.... Love them Big Blocks. I blew my last LS5 (probably came stock in your car, it was in my 34 Chev).
hell yeah man...american muscle...im teaching my 5 year old what it is and he is loving it
I'm happy shifting at 1500.
Thanks Tony. Either some skill or a nice wide 2 lane road! Sometimes both.
haha its nice to see som1 that knows how to handle a car..most people in this situation would counterstear completley and crash into the wall..great sounding vette
@GrimCreeper7 Yes I did - you are the first to point that out.Old Tremecs used to do that. It's been fixed.
This is music to my ears.
Yes mate!
Dude sounds and looks like a monster!!!!!!
Sick!
Nice nice nice! I may put one in my 79 corvette.
GO DUDE GO!!!!
Solid roller or hydraulic? What is your lifter pre-load set at? You on any forums? YB?
Awesome!!
SICK AND INSANE :D I LOVE IT!!!!
that's badass
Well said.
0:38 checks rear view to see that smoke in the air 👍👍👍👍👍
@HooT99 Thanks, glad I could help.
Hey Sk8, there's a little more in this engine than high performance valve springs! But thanks for coming by.
Barath, I'm a car guy, of course I don't mind. (1) The 540 is a bigblock Chevy and weighs the same as any aluminum head/intake bb from 396 to 454. (2) The car is an original bb car that I bought with the original engine still in it. 5 years ago I switched over to the 540. I put a new crate engine in. By the time the car was running reliably I was in to the engine and upgraded parts for $50,000CAD. (3) 10k miles is about what I am averaging between rebuilds each running about $15,000CAD.
i see the rear end tried to get better of you there! lol nice cars man!! :)
@mustang517 I watched the whole video just now and could not find any sign of a smile. But I was smiling on the inside.
Where do you mount your camera Dave? i dont have one in my vette anymore
