    Quick comment: It doesn't have to say "independent publisher" in that space to be an indie self-publishing. An indie can, and most do, put their own company in that spot. So it can read ABC publisher or Joe Brown's Publishing House or whatever you want as long as it's not stealing a trademark or misrepresenting that you're something that you're not. A lot of indies have publishing company LLCs and those will be listed there and look like a trad publisher, but it's just their publishing name and it's still an indie just doing their own books. There's also a few small boutique publishers that will have their name here and they're not exactly a trad house or an indie, but something inbetween.

  • @pat4005

    It looks like some authors like to use a pen name, and others make up a pen name for themselves as if they were a publishing company. But either way, no one can use "LLC" as part of their business name unless it is actually an LLC, which is something you would set up with your state's Dept of Revenue. So either you are a hobbyist, an author, a publishing company, or neither. There is no in-between. You either are a writer/author/artist creating books, as an independent or sole proprietor, or a company making books in-house, (or that hires them as freelancers, etc), but there is no in-between.

  • @michaelsbeverly

    @@pat4005 An indie author can get an LLC and they can be a publising house and an author (if you're an indie author you're automatically the publisher, axiomatically). My point was that you can find LLC or Corporations or sole prop using a DBA putting things in the space for "Publisher" and it can look like a traditional publisher. Point being, most indie books don't say "Independently Published" that's only a default for those that choose to not put a name. So, you're wrong, sorry, there are lots of indie writers who also co-write and/or publishe with others, so they're acting like small niche publishers, but also writing. There's also a lot of "hobby" writers who are trying to become professional full-time writers. There's are TONS of "in-between" people doing a variety of mixes from hybrid author to hobbiest indie to full-time indie who is a sole prop (although that's a bad tax choice if you're making decent money) to indies who write books and also publish other authors, some as co-writers, some as ghost writers, some acting like a trad publisher. I work with an author who has 5 pen names. Or maybe 6, I lost count. I work with small publishers, small authors, big authors....hobby authors.....there's all kinds of situations. There are tons of in-between.

  • @kiterafrey

    In between are called small presses in the industry. Unless they’re founded by those who also write for them then they’re called Indie presses. Then larger trad publishers not a house imprint are called Mid presses like Scholastic is.

  • @michaelsbeverly

    @michaelsbeverly

    Жыл бұрын

    @@kiterafrey What do you think is the right term for Waterhouse Press and Liquid Mind Media? Both established by authors who are both very successful, M. Wild, LT Ryan. It seems "indie press" isn't exactly right, these presses employ people and seem no different from a boutique press or "small" press. I mean, we're splitting hairs here, but what about Michael Anderle's machine? He established the publishing business and he also writes, but it publishes hundreds of books by dozens of authors (heck, maybe he's passed a hundred authors). If you look at the numbers and the business model, it's similar to many mid presses, and calling it a small press seems inaccurate, the guy is doing 8 figures a year, more or less. There's lots of smaller indies, Dakota Trout and his wife come to mind, that run small presses or "indie" presses (or boutique presses)...so I don't think it's helpful to have a set strict definition as the second you do, there's an exception or a player that doesn't fit. I'd hardly call Michael Anderle's business an "indie" press as it's misleading. If your're passing 5 or 10 million a year and publishing a book a day with dozens (hundreds) of authors, calling that "indie" doesn't seem accurate to me. Of course, this is all subjective, it's not like there's some law about it. In anycase, the comment I was responding to is terrible wrong -- there's so many models and business types out there that the "in-betweens" make up a huge part of the market. And an important part of it. Another point is that there are indies who have multiple pen names and work with freelancers (ghosts) and also write themselves, but you wouldn't know this because the pen names are kept separate (their own Author Central accounts). Also, what do you call something like the Bella Forest series? It's made well over 8 figures, who knows exactly, maybe 20 or 30 million. Is it an indie press? A small press? Not a press at all because the ghosts are hidden and it's all marketed under one name? In the end, a rose is a rose...

  • @kiterafrey

    @@michaelsbeverly Those are simply the industry standard terms. I’ve been working in publishing for over 10 years. The terms honestly don’t always make sense, like still using the terms press at all considering few presses actually have paper presses anymore. In the industry the terms Boutique & Vanity are used as derogatory terms for publishers who scam authors into paying to get published but without the rights retention of indie paths. My comment was to clarify because those who carry books, do awards, so reviews, & handle international sales rights all still use standard traditional publishing verbiage. And the term boutique being used can turn off a seller or awards committee to an author’s hard work or a publisher’s reputation can be damaged. For something huge like Bella Forest nothing is going to be harmful but to a new press launching that mislabel can be career ending.

    Loved this video and how you broke down the stats. Can I ask, do you think it would it be a good idea for an author or someone who is considering independently publishing children's books to perhaps consider starting a podcast sharing some of their material in addition to a KZread channel with some of their stories to try to build up an audience? I know from my own buying habits, I tend to only buy from people that I 'know' and have gained like and trust factor. I always wonder how complete unknown authors manage to sell such a high quantity of books which is why I was wondering if my suggestions might help with new authors getting out there and known a bit more? Would love to know your thoughts on this. Thanks so much.

    Just a heads up you can buy your own ISBNs and you use that you can add anything to the publisher name line. So some self pubs do that and it doesn’t say independently published. So if you want to look trad that’s how you do it.

So I'm still looking for the best way to get eyes on the book.

    There are several was she could have done it. As a teacher she could have purchased them herself and claimed it as a tax write off, or if the school likes her they may have purchased them for the school, and she could have put a few into the library. If the children like the book parents may buy it for them and lastly she could have partnered with a children's agency.
