    Best non technical review I saw about this lens ... It's usable, it's cheap, has caracter, it's manual, good for some old schools calm shooting in the streets, and some awesome portraits. As soon as the budget alows it it will be in my shelf.

    Great review, I love how you just give your gut impression on specs while using the lens and then offer some captions with specifics. It gives you the both points of view in the review. This lens looks really fun to play with and use for the money.

    Thank you for the informative review. I just wanted to let you know, that "the weird looking bokeh" at 12:05 is probably due to you using the First Curtain Electronic Shutter option in combination with fast shutter speed. Because the first curtain, in this case, is fully in focus and the second curtain is somewhat out of focus, one edge of the bokeh balls becomes obscured (the shutter speed needs to be sufficiently fast for this effect to appear). If you start shooting at something like 1/8000s shutter speed, most of the bokeh ball will disappear (I accidentally got this effect on my photos once). To make sure that we see the *optical* bokeh of this lens on the photos, the photographer needs to use fully mechanical or fully electronic shutter. I hope, this helps.

    So in this regard Sony a6400 will not reproduce that swirl boked since it's only 1/4000 fast.

    So after some research, I also asked to an youtuber @PavSZ, that has done a nice review about this lens, with many good pictures with the swirl effect, and he shot it all with sony a6600 witch haves low shutter speed compared to Fuji cameras that can go above 1/4000 with eletronic shutter. I can't see this theory to be the cause of the swirl, I think is a inherent characteristic of the lens.

  • @kroliknor

    @kroliknor

    @@luisaguiar857 These are two different and unrelated effects. You are right: swirly bokeh is caused by aberrations of the lens, and does not depend on the shutter design or shutter speed. On the other hand, truncated bokeh balls (when they are all truncated on the same side) are caused by the two shutter curtains being at different distances from the sensor (as is the case when one curtain is the electronic shutter and the other curtain is the mechanical shutter) in combination with short shutter speeds (when the shutter opening is just a narrow slit formed by two shutter curtains, is running across the sensor). And of course, a combined effect of bokeh swirl and bokeh truncation may produce particularly weird looking bokeh balls. ))

    it's a lot like a vintage lens but without having to worry about fungus etc. I have the Meike version which as far as I can tell is the same optics. For the price it's hard to complain. The softness, lack of contrast and chromatic aberrations make it totally unsuitable for nearly all pro work, but for hobby shots it's fun and I like the character, particularly the swirliness. The only thing I dislike is the stepless aperture, not so much because it doesn't have defined stops, but because it's easy to accidentally change it. It may be better on the 7artisans, I don't know, but from my experience all budget lenses with a stepless ring seem to have the same issue.

    Thanks Matt, this was actually very helpful. I stayed to the end and it paid off! Your images of the Chinon camera and the lamp convinced me that this is the character of the lens and not that I have a duff copy. I was making moves to send mine back because that highlight flare was so pronounced on mine that I wondered if it might have slipped through QA somehow. (There are other factors - the focal length seems a few mm short, and the focus endstop is actually slightly beyond infinity) It's very interesting to compare it side by side with the revised Kamlan 50mm f1.1, which in its Mk2 iteration is way sharper, contrastier and flare-free wide open. The two lenses begin to equate at f1.4. The Kamlan mk1 was about half the size and weight of the Mk2, but soft at most apertures. I wonder if 7Artisans will have another go at this 50mm 0.95? The character and quality of the Leica Noctilux is still a way off, but Kamlans and 7Artisans of the world are edging closer with every iteration...

    Hi I just accidentally dropped my 7artisans 50mm f0.95 lens (dropped the lens to the shopping mall ground/floor) and leaving one scratch mark & faded coating. And the lens glass still normal (didn't break) and the video & photo results also seems normal. But when I shook the lens body, I heard some shaking sound/noise, is it ok?

    It’s definitely a lot of fun and excels at portraiture especially. I would say there is a noticeable difference between f/0.95 and f/1.4 in terms of background separation/bokeh. However, I would say to consider the Viltrox 56mm f/1.4 if you can swing the extra few dollars simply for the extra speed associated with the autofocus. It’s very convenient to have. Here’s a link to my review of that lens for your consideration: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZGmcurytlc_Jprw.html

    Look at the TTartisan 50mm f1.2 or the Viltrox Matt mentioned. The 7artisans lenses aren't really that good (I believe because of QC) as the other chinese brand lenses in these price ranges.

    heavy lens doesn't mean it will produce nice image. it's the quality of the glasses that produce the images and the plastic wraps around the glasses doesn't make any different in term of image quality. the lighter the gear is better when you are shooting all day

    OMG! This lens SUUUUUUCK! There is no excuse, no justification and no eufemism for such a softness in the center of the frame! It is basically useless unless you want to achive killer-hangover of LSD-trip cinematic effect footage. They really need to make mark II just as better as Kamlan did with its 50mm f/1.1 lens. Second revision is great and this 7Artisans need to elevate it to at least 35mm f/0.95 level.
