in this video number {786} TOP221-227 SMPS IC Circuit Description and Testing. i explained TOP221, TOP222, TOP2223, TOP224, TOP225, TOP226 & TOP227 TOP Switch-II Family Three-Terminal Off-Line PWM Switch IC. it is 100 KHz offline switching IC used in universal power supply circuits, it have VCC voltage range from 4.7 V to 5.7 V.
it is Lowest cost, lowest component count switcher solution with Cost competitive with linear above 5 W. Very low AC/DC losses - up to 90% efficiency. it have Built-in Auto-restart and Current limiting. it have Latching Thermal shutdown for system level protection. it Implements Flyback, Forward, Boost or Buck topologies. Works with primary or opto feedback. Stable in discontinuous or continuous conduction mode operation. Source connected tab for low EMI, Circuit simplicity and Design Tools.
it is second generation TOPSwitch-II family. it is more cost effective and provides several enhancements over the first generation TOPSwitch family. The TOPSwitch-II family extends the power range from 100W to 150W for 100/115/ 230 VAC input and from 50W to 90W for 85-265 VAC universal
input. This brings TOPSwitch technology advantages to many new applications, i.e. TV, Monitor, Audio amplifiers, etc. Many significant circuit enhancements that reduce the sensitivity to board layout and line transients now make the design even easier. The standard 8L PDIP package option reduces cost in lower power, high efficiency applications. The internal lead frame of this package uses six of its pins to transfer heat from the chip directly to the board, eliminating the cost of a heatsink. TOPSwitch incorporates all functions necessary for a switched mode control system into a three terminal monolithic IC: power MOSFET, PWM controller, high
voltage start up circuit, loop compensation and fault protection circuitry.

Haseeb, Great thanks to your wonderful explanation .Let me tell you my experience with this ic. i was repairing a controller which this ic was its power input main component. i was skipping this power stage because i didn't understand how this ic works, so i applied externally the needed DC voltage that will be generated by this ic circuit. then when it came another time i had two controllers of the same type, i tried a different thing which is that i changed the control pin capacitors and ,thanks God , it worked. Now i understand how and why my action made difference. so, i'm grateful for you sir Also,it will be wonderful to organize the videos where you explain those power ics on your channel gathering them in a playlist with special title .thanks again sir

How does the IC regulate the output voltage ? Does it it change the duty cycle based in the control voltage ?

exactly as it offline pwm switch so it adjusts its duty cycle based on the control voltage value
Thanks sir I want to that three leg ic and eight pin ic both work in the same manner? Ie:as switching ic ? Then do we need to use pwm ic or not? Then what about power op temp of ic and heat sinc sir? Will it resit temp at above 300 v 5amp and above , pls let me know regarding small chip.

best regards 1. both 3 pin and 8 pin (DIP & SMD) work in the same way in 8 pin packages, pin 1,2 3, 6,7 & 8 are grounded 5 is drain pin and 4 is control pin while in 3 pin, pin 1 is control, 2 is source and 3 is drain 2. these ICs control the PWM based on the control voltage (considered as feedback signal) 3 pin IC is installed on heatsink 4. both ics have auto shutdown on over temperature
Morning sir I have a few gree outdoor main boards they have over 300v an the switching ic but there're not switching, vcc pin voltage is fluctuating....plz give some advice
Hello, thank-you for all your time and effort teaching us, would a faulty opto coupler cause the VCC capacitor to heat up and explode, its the capacitor connected to the TOP221P. It only does this if I add loads?

normally an optocoupler is working as a series switch. which couples ground as feedback to PWM IC. and in some cases it switches vcc voltage from vcc winding to the PWM ic vcc pin. might be there some other error which is causing to explode the capacitor. there is one possibility that the vcc capacitor is low voltage, otherwise 50v range capacitor is used as vcc capacitor

@Haseeb Electronics thanks for your reply, I'm a bit stuck with this. The capacitor is 4.7uf at 450v, the diode supplying this capacitor will go short too sometimes too. I'll keep investigating, I have schematics. Many thanks

if it is 450V that means it is bulk capacitor. connected in output of bridge rectifier . please check bridge rectifier. if bridge rectifier is damaged, it causes to provide ac voltage to dc capacitor and and dc capacitor explodes

@Haseeb Electronics I will check you suggestios, the Bridge rectifier is charging the 4 large capacitors at 323 volts dc, the power supply runs fine until I plug in the loads (2 Amplifier modules and a mixer section) it a Behringer PMX5000. the smps is a SPS600, I can leave it running without load for hours with no issue, I can not isolate the issue. The 4.7uf 450v capacitor is connected to pin 1 of a small tranformer, this tranformer winding pin 3 then goes to a TOP221P Drain pin,

no top252-258 is different than this group as that ic have different pinout. but its working is approximately similar

any DSO having 100 MHz, dual channel, 1GSa/Sec with comparable affordable price will enough for a routine commercial usage
Hello, what about OB5282cp smps? It has VDD 11.2V but its not giving output for mosfet :-(

please check components at pin number 1 check current sense resistor check mosfet optocoupler if everything is good. then the IC may be suspected

@@HaseebElectronics pin 1 at this circuit is not even used its circuit is open by the factory. I though, that if smps gets vdd voltage it should be runing even mosfet or other component is bad. IC is not giving any pulse to the mosfet, CS resistor okay but 0V measued on live circut, also 0V FB pin 0V optocoupler both sides (makes sense if mos not pulsing) or am I wrong? HV pin gets 123V but its rated for 500V so this should be okay. Thank you for your time!

welcome dear i think it is not S478KU it is S47B its equivalent part number is R1511S047B it is 4.7V regulator please check its datasheet. might be it is the same www.mouser.com/datasheet/2/792/r1511-ec-1099479.pdf if it is helpful, please let me know
