I have been an online viewer of Red Rocks for a long time and over the last few years I have grown grateful to have access to full services and podcasts like these. I am a fairly new missionary and although I LOVE going to my local church and learning from our African pastors, it’s also such a blessing to have access to services in my own language. All that to say, thank you all for your obedience to Christ and for building His kingdom. These conversations are so important and fun! I also wanted to say thank you for sharing this sermon because it has impacted me this week. Growing up a Christian, I tried not to focus too much on Heaven because I didn’t want God to feel like I only wanted Him so I could have a great eternity. It felt like I was just using him to get what I wanted. It always felt kind of selfish to me. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that my thinking was so wrong. My view of God wasn’t quite right. I wasn’t seeing His goodness and the extent of His love. Jesus is the one who tells us to look forward to heaven, he wants us to think about it. It helps calm our anxiety and reminds us of the goodness of God. After listening to this sermon, I was having a moment of anxiety that seemed so trivial but was real. I was thinking about traveling and seeing all the different places I want to see in the world which lead to feeling anxious that time is running out and finally feeling guilty because how can I be worried about traveling when there’s important work to be done. Then I had a thought about heaven: when the new earth is here, I will have eternity to explore it. So simple, and so freeing. My time to travel is not running out, I will have eternity to do that…but the time I have to share the gospel is running out. In that moment, thinking about Heaven helped me balance God’s love for me (he cares that I love traveling and seeing the world He made) and his love for people (the time is running out for people to hear about His great love for them). I felt the weight of anxiety about missing out on something in the future begin to lift. It set me free to be in this moment and not think see the work he’s asked me to do as something that causes me to miss out on the fun/good things he’s made. Heaven will be perfection. Everything good will be there and so I don’t have to worry that I will miss something good on the earth. Could thinking about heaven be the cure for FOMO?
