Just got off of VASAvation and learned about the Cessna Citation crash in Tennessee with the loss of all souls on board... Hard to watch but they only flew less than 3 minutes. The full story is yet to be realized but the sustainable information is there. PILOT ERROR! So much was done wrong and the outcome almost certain that it was close to a suicide flight...

    Love it. On a newly minted pilots license I was once flying my Dads 172 near Stockton CA. I was on Oakland center. The controller calls my N number and tells me to divert to Stockton because my Dad thinks the weather is to low for me to be flying. I get to Stockton and he jumps in and we fly to the destination (He was a career Air Force pilot with thousands of hours and of course IFR). Thanks Dad.

Also don't raise the flaps until clear of the runway. We have , on average 1 Beechcraft Bonanza/Baron land gear up per WEEK! (50/year). Subscribed. Juan.

    Love watching your videos, all the way from down under. You're an excellent pilot always thinking ahead of the aircraft, taking care of the engines, thinking logically about your situation and using the winds to your advantage 👍. I was thinking would it be worth your while to upgrade to the G1000? Still keep the Ipad mini for writing atis readbacks and other tasks. It's just to me the cockpit seems a little cluttered but that's just me, minimalist by nature. I think it's great your mum cares and worried enough about you to call the tower to see where you were. Buy her a big bunch of flowers and give her a kiss. Mum's are the best! 😀

  • @DougHanchard
    @DougHanchard6 жыл бұрын

    LOL !!! Marvelous! Especially now that we have met your co-pilot Mom. Love it. I've had that call. Twice. Once by the tower as you have now experienced and once by CP-140 Aurora (equivalent to a P-3 Orion) that was calling on Guard north of the Queen Charlotte Islands - both initiated by my over anxious Mom when I was a low time pilot. with less than 1,500 hours. The first one was when I was flying a charter up the Strait of Georgia off the coast of British Columbia when the weather deteriorated quickly requiring me to divert to the closest airport and didn't call from the ground right away as heavy rain soon pounded the area. When I made the call to get my clearance to depart, ground was on the horn with an urgent message. Ooops. The second time was a little more real for Mom, when I was flying my first ferry flight in a Cessna T303 ; Japan - Alaska - B.C. and was (according to Mom) overdue on my last big leg between Juneau, Alaska and Port Hardy, B.C. After always calling her that I had landed as I completed each big leg, I had told her I should be arriving in Port Hardy at around 19:00 local time, but she swears I said 9:00 - as in AM. The Canadian Forces (now RCAF) had a routine CP-140 Aurora patrol bouncing around the air anyway and was on the look out - since 11 AM, looking for a Cessna Crusader that hadn't even taken off yet. When my flight plan became activated - the Aurora was called off as it became clear that Mom had it wrong and the Search and Rescue Center in Victoria rang her up to tell her I was just departing Alaskan airspace. Well that didn't stop another CF's Patrol aircraft from getting on Guard to let me know, I was in REALLY BIG trouble with my Mom as I entered Canadian airspace north of the Queen Charlotte's. I didn't sleep much upon arrival and making that telephone call home :-) Have a nice flight!

    Too close to home for me to laugh very hard. Had to play the ending for my wife though. She gets so mad if I don’t call or text before I depart, I have explained to her that I don’t feel comfortable breaking my train of thought after I start my pre-flight walk around. That she knows my expected departure time and if you don’t hear from me I departed on time. I always text upon arrival first thing after engine shutdown. Doesn’t matter though I always get the angry emoji as a reply. I might have messed up though as now she knows she can call the tower and have ATC put me on notice upon arrival. Not very smart am I. Lol

    You don’t have to watch a train wreck to learn something. Every video is full of learning moments both good and bad. From how someone gets their clearance to how they interact with ATC. You can also pickup on other pilot’s habits. Both what you want to emulate as well as those you don’t. But if nothing else you learned that a controller will not say “you are in big trouble” what they would say is “ have a number for you to call for a possible pilot deviation “ thanks for watching.

    Okay, a couple of things. First, I'll give you the controller story. When I was learning to fly, my mother also was taking lessons. This was back in the mid to later 70's, and no one ever wore a headset, unless you were flying for the regionals or the majors. So, as you might guess, some people were a little bit loud into the microphone because they had problems hearing themselves. Next, I was flying out of Groton, CT., and at the time, you could actually go up and sit and talk with the tower controllers. So, I had my lesson, and my mom was next. Dad was the CFI. So, I head on up to the tower to hang out with they do her lesson, she preflights, starts up and calls for taxi. Now, she's still newish, so her radio phraseology isn't that great yet. She's loud. The guy working ground is this huge black man, looked like he could have played defensive back for any of the NFL teams. She's screaming over the radio and he's being calm as can be, 'the controller voice' that Brian Shul talks about. So, this gentleman in a trainee in the tower, there's a senior controller there, and me. Middle of the afternoon, it's quiet, so the controller is handling ground and tower. Mom taxies down to the end of the runway, does her runup, calls the tower, says she's ready for takeoff, is granted permission, and as she's climbing out 23, which goes directly over Long Island Sound, she calls back because she's forgotten to tell the tower which way she wants to go. Of course, she's still loud. At this point, this controller mutters 'Screaming Bitch.' I said 'Yup, I know exactly what you mean.' He turned to me. I'm 18 at this point, almost 19, and looks at me like 'who the hell are you, punk kid?' I said 'That's my mother. I totally agree, she can be a screaming bitch.' Guy turned whiter than Casper the Ghost! He was stammering out apologies and stuff, and it's like 'No, no, you're absolutely right. She can be that way sometimes, and I was just laughing. The other controller just looked over at the first one with the semi-grin on his face, kinda like a 'gotcha!' Our club tried to be really cool with the controllers, and it was nice that you could go up in the cab back then and watch them do their job. Gave you an idea of what they had to put up with from the other side of the coin. Okay, the second thing. I posted this to Facebook, but I don't know how often you check that. What are you looking for in a glass panel? Are you looking for PFD and MFD, with everything, or would you just take a glass ADI and HSI, and use your Mini for terrain, mapping, etc, basically like you do now? The reason I ask is I saw 310 Pilot is using a G5 in his 310, and is going to be adding the second G5 for HSI/Nav after Air Venture. The B55 is on the AML for the G5, and with the GDL29b, you should be able to connect the G5s to both your autopilot and your IFDs, both 550 and 440. Probably looking at about $6K plus install, and really, with the iPad and Foreflight, you should have an inexpensive PFD/MFD set up. Finally, you're running the IO-470s, right? Jerry Wagner is running the IO- 520s in his 414, and he's getting the same fuel burn and about the same airspeed as you are. Maybe time to look into a 340A? :p :D

  • @BaronPilot

    @BaronPilot

    6 жыл бұрын

    HAHAHA Awesome story!! I'm thinking something like the skyview makes the most sense if they certify it for Baron's. Yes I have IO-470s

  • @GaryMCurran

    @GaryMCurran

    6 жыл бұрын

    The -470s are a nice fit for the B55, but I was thinking, if you get the same fuel burn as, say a 340A, you could move up the ladder a bit, get a slightly larger aircraft, and pressurization. Might make some of those cross countries a little easier, especially if you can go higher to mitigate winds. As to the Skyview HDX, I agree that would be the perfect solution, but I can't find any kind of progress indicator on Dynon's website. I would be nice if it was done by the end of this year, but I don't think it will be. I'm guessing that the hold up on each certification is the Autopilot, since the displays, EIS, transponder, etc., are all generic. But, that's really a guess, nothing more. Anyway, have fun at OSH, and I'm glad you shared this video, it was a lot of fun looking for the 'mistake.' In fact, the only mistake I heard in the whole thing was when the controller called you 75 Yankee.
