amen!! I'd encourage looking into any family records and wills. I understand it is far, FAR more difficult for black families to find their records but I have heard a few stories recently where it was possible. I'd be happy to help in any way and I know I'm not the only one!

The sad part is that the Bruce family bought that land for $1225. When the Manhattan Beach municipal government seized the land under eminent domain to build a park so they said, Willa Bruce fought and lost a legal battle to get a fair price for the land (she wanted $120,000, but was paid $14,000). The land the government took lay unused for almost 20 years before Manhattan Beach turned it over to Los Angeles county.

I cannot understand how any African person or person original to this land can stomach sharing a smile with people whose families were not stripped of their ability to own, thrive, and just "be". We have to stop telling people to "forgive" and not to feel "hate" when the proper actions of restoring wealth, knowledge of who they were before the notion of "black/enslaved/Christian" was beaten into them. Honestly all I could think about is how am I paying the property taxes. I’d be grateful to God, but still. More money, more responsibilities and potentially more expenses. Financial literacy is key. Hopefully the individuals in this family have it and exercise it consistently.

This isn’t a happy ending. They must get that land back and lost revenue/ compensation for the past 100 years too.

@Platinum Mew yeah I hear you, it’s definitely a victory. But considering they were set back massively, in terms of generational worth, I feel they should get more than just the land back. Maybe enough for them to start the resort that was once there?

Wonderful story. This is the first of many ceased/stolen properties that will surface in the US.

Amazing! Sad it took so long, and all the problems his relatives had to endure, but glad they will now be able to prosper!

At least an injustice was corrected. Cant help but wonder what is the real reason its being returned? 🤔

I wonder what the property taxes will be? I hope they can afford it.

In my town, the city took a familys property that had been in their family 200 years, by eminent domain. It’s sad to see land taken away from a family, but it happens all the time, and theirs nothing we can do about it.
