(729) Is the Case Bowie Worth the Price?

The Case Bowie has only been with me for one day. I ask the question is the Case knife worth the price? It's a rambling kind of video, so get your popcorn 🍿 ready.

Thank you JP. The nice thing about living in Texas is I can wear this thing just about anywhere & not get arrested, or have people freak out. If I want to semi-conceal, a large t-shirt covers 80% of the knife. What gives it away is the leather squeaking sound as I walk. Sounds like I'm riding a 🐎 in a leather saddle. 🤣🤠

I do like the Case Bowie but I have always thought it was a tad over priced. But I also get it. Case doesn't make a lot of them, and so there is the supply and demand thing. I've thought about picking up the Rough Ryder or Marble's Marine Raider but it just wouldn't be the same. And as you said, Case has really paid attention to detail. So yes, Part of the price is the tang stamp. You can say the same thing about Benchmades, GECs, etc. I also agree, I wished it had a Dangler sheath. But also, you can easily see the difference between the leather in those sheaths! I think you are also spot on about low cost knives still have their value and place and really all that many people will ever leave. Incidentally an original Collins 18 /V44 from WWII si going to run you around $1000 or more. I think with just a little effort, you get get a large D or O ring and strap of leather and turn that sheath into a nice Dangler!

I believe that if you are looking for a good example of an historic Bowie Knife, the Case Bowie does that. Other knives called or consider Bowie Knives vary a lot. It is one that when you see it; the question of what you call it is undisputed. That it is a Bowie Knife without question. When that knife comes out of the sheath being so shiny; it makes a fashion statement you have to like. If you like, knives you can’t help liking that knife. That certainly helps make up for the higher price. The sheath is well-made so the strap does not get in the way or cut from drawing the knife is better than lots of others. But; being the hilt is brass; storing the knife in the sheath will turn the hilt green. And cause the leather on the sheath to darken or turn green too. That is something to be aware of. 🐯🙂✨

And another thing... You basically have two price options when it comes to these big monster Bowies. It's going to be a something out of China or Pakistan for under $35. Or it is going to be from somewhere else for over a $100. and for often north of $150. Like some many knife options out there --- there really isn't a mid-range price for the knife!

We need some mid range Bowie's. Unfortunately it's like you said. Used to be Cold Steel would come out with something in that price range, made in Taiwan 🇹🇼. Almost China 🇨🇳. Now Cold Steel wants over 100 dollars for most of their Bowie's.

Glad you got your grail knife, and that it’s awesome! I think you’re right, it’s good to try different patterns and qualities of knives. And decide what works for you. RR works just fine for me - more expensive knives just make me uncomfortable using them. There’s a fine line there - you gotta carry a nice-enough knife to get pleasure out of using it, but not so nice you hesitate to actually work with it. sometimes I carry an ugly old pakkawood Frost because I don’t want to ding up my nice RRs. And that’s just WRONG. Lol.

The big difference in cheap and expensive Bowies is the full tang. If you take one that isn't full tang and try to chop at a tree, the handle will get loose. I have a Western W-49 and that is built like a tank. I don't think it would be possible to break the handle on that.

I’ve been collecting Bowie knives since 1987. I enjoyed watching your video. 👍🏼👍🏼 I bought a Case Bowie in 2004. I think I paid $99 for it. It’s a great knife. It’s definitely worth the $200 price tag now. My problem was the handle was too small for my hand. I could only fit three and a half fingers on it. If I scrunched my fingers together, I could hold it, but it was uncomfortable. I eventually gave it to a friend for his 50th birthday. That was over 15 years ago, and he still has it and still uses it it. I have lots of Bowie knives, and if I was the sort of collector who displays his knives, I might have kept it. But I use all my knives, until I get a new one to carry.

  • @WilliamsKnifeLife

Thank you. Ergonomics has a lot to do with whether a knife is a good fit for you. The Case Bowie does have a smaller grip area that fits my hands better than the larger handle Bowie's. It wouldn't be a great knife for me if my hands got scrunched up every time I used it.

I own lots of case knives. I gave 140 dollars for a kickstart trapperlock, so I thought 200 for the bowie was cheap comparatively. I suppose it's easier to make a good, big knife than a good, small knife. Now I have 2 case xx bowies. 1 on a belt with the judge holstered. 1 on a belt with a 357 mag holstered.

As for the money if your looking for a survival Bowie type knife there are better options from companies like Kbar and Tops etc.. still made in usa but built for more destructive type use.
