718 Boxster T - Review by 911 Virgin

The 718 Boxster T. Tactile controls, sublime suspension setup, wonderfully ergonomic and more power than most would need on the road. It has become cliche to fall into criticism of the engine, and yes, it does have a rather gruff character when compared to the sonorous six.... but does that make it a bad or compromised car?!...... see what we think as we take you through the car in some detail and give the 911virgin verdict!
At the time of filming this car was for sale at www.911virgin.com

    Due to the long gearing with Porsche manual transmissions, I find one of the benefits of the 2.0 Turbo is that you can really get into the RPMs. I prefer being able to shift at redline without being on a track. A manual 718 at is an absolute blast to drive on the street. Its easy to bypass the exhaust valves and leave them open for nice sound all the time. Put a tune on one and you will want for nothing. The Ts are so light, with a bit more power you will leave many exotic and muscle cars behind. Especially, on curvy roads. Lastly, it’s a real bargain at about half the price as a 4.0 GTS with options or GT4. You will have 90% of the fun with plenty of cash left in your account.

    The 997 is our bread and butter so there will definitely be a few videos covering that model. Cars always used ot be quite expensive in SA, a number were exported from the UK back in the day.

    911virgin you can buy a nice example for R600k at the moment (£26k) here in SA. A new VW Golf R is probably close to R700k as a comparison.

    Nice video - thought you had borrowed my Boxster T ! Same body colour and detail down to yellow dials and centre console stitching . Agree fully on the engine it’s a great 4 cylinder , and on UK roads and occasional track day it’s as much fun as a 911 - and I do speak as someone who has owned several 911 , including rwd 997 GTS to 991 GT3 - keep the uploads coming ; ps not everyone realises that on T exhaust only pops and crackles in sport not in sport plus ( check out the table in owners manual ) - not sure why , possibly for track noise limits ?

    Hi there Anthony. Glad you liked the video and shared our views. There no such thing as right or wrong when it comes to Porsche cars, every one has a certain appeal. As for the exhaust note you may well be right. In the UK some circuits can be very strict. It was always frustrating racing a 911, particularly in 24 hour events where noise control is tight. Because the noise was measured a metre from the exhaust you also got engine noise whereas many other cars had engines up front only to hear a far louder rasp when out on track. I find Ferrari a particularly piercing sound on track and yet they come in under threshold when doing a static test.

  • @911virgin8

    This is a Boxster not a Cayman but yes, it has a lot of technology packed in to enhance the driving experience. Porsche Torque Vectoring, Porsche active suspension management, Sport Chrono, Mechanical limited slip diff and dynamic gearbox / engine mounts. It makes for a very interesting chassis which can be explored as you become familiar with the car.

    911virgin, fine with the above, but still doubt if you get Dynamic Chassis Control (active dampers/tilt management) in (any) Cayman/Boxter. On the clip you claim it has it, that is why I ask.

    I think you produced an excellent apologia for the 4cylinder but for me, a Porsche should be a visceral experience; the noise is makes when you accelerate hard is fundamental to that experience. Sadly, irrespective of how good the car is overall, your 718t fails that test and doesn't stir the senses!

    It's easy to dismiss this car on the basis it doesn't have a big 6 cylinder lump and I was a bit cynical when starting out on the video but the car grew on me. I'm someone who doesn't have a favourite Porsche preferring instead a dream garage of 20 or so Porsches depending on mood and usage. I think Porsche have done a good job with the 2.0T (touring) lifting it above a standard 2.0T (turbo).

    Why do most British Porsche enthusiasts pronounce the brand name wrong? Is it stubbornness? There is only one correct way to say Porsche, and Porsche themselves have even released a video on it. It just sticks out like a sore thumb in every video I seem to see. Great overview and video of the 718 T, nonetheless.

    The same point was raised in another of our videos and I will give the same answer. I don't speak German, indeed you might argue I barely speak English! With that in mind I always feel a bit self conscious trying to kid everyone that I'm fluent in another language by putting all the accents in place. If it works for others great but I'm happy to admit defeat and alert everyone to my ignorance. Ultimately I'm pretty sure Porsche won't lose any sleep providing I keep handing over the money and using the product. If you think my pronunciation of Porsche is bad you should hear me trying to murder the Thai language when on holiday or eating in a restaurant !!

    @@911virgin8 thanks for at least commenting on it. I think the only thing you're missing is the extra "uh" sound at the end, you nailed the rest. I really enjoyed the review and your comments about the sound are spot on. We had a base 718 with PSE for a day and I thought the car sounded great. It's a shame people knock the 718 before they try it, like you said. Fantastic cars... Hopefully it lowers the used market prices for someone like me when it's time to change cars :)

    Responding to an old comment - like the presenter, I just can’t bring myself to call it Porsh-a. In English “sche” is always run together. Now, as an American, I will say that Brits pronounce aluminum wrong (I joke, I joke!).

  • @OsirisPL

    @OsirisPL

    It's caused by Brits being very stubborn and always doing things "their" way even if that's obviously wrong or ridiculous. An example is insisting to calling Porsche a "Poush" by an actual Porsche dealer despite knowing the correct pronunciation.
