One thing i have learned riding.. Flip Flops and kickstarts lead to missing skin and many bruises. Great video as always.

In my crazy youth I’d take off for a hundred mile ride up the coast with flip flops, shorts, no helmet, just enough money for gas, a t shirt and maybe a jacket strapped to the back of the seat

@@vidguy007 that's awesome man. I used to take bike ride trip on my bike starting anywhere from 200 to 800 miles one way in t-shirt , shorts , & flip flops. I used to get some weird looks on the interstate cuz seeing a chubby fat dude on a bike & wearing flip flops too it's something you just don't see. I have to ride my bike with flip flops because i have big very very extremely wide feet sz15 6 EEEEEE wide with very fat wide toes that are equally straight across making my foot very very wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. My foot outgrew shoes , socks , & boots 30 years ago & flip flops is the only footwear that will barely and I mean barely fit on my foot because of my toes being straight across & wider than the flip flop straps. @@vidguy007 did a ride like that with a few Jersey(England) friends shortly after doing an oil change on my Yamy xs1100 Special, the last rider, Stu, got me to stop telling me my bike was spewing oil, lucky my other mate , Topo was a seasoned biker, had an extra sparkolater, screwed it into the drainhole, filled her up with oil and we were away again. Tks again my mates, Jersey guys

The squeak is the 'sprag' or one-way clutch that grabs to turn the crankshaft using the starter motor, but slips otherwise(over-runs). It likely needs to be cleaned and oiled. It is right above and forward of the flywheel where you adjusted the spark timing. Be sure to sync the throttle plates so they both start to open at the same time for best and most even performance. When you get them right, it will feel a LOT smoother. Bought mine new in 1970, so have a bit of experience. tom

That squawk sound reminded me of the bearings in the oneway pullstart spinner that squalls when a Briggs & Stratton starts up cause the ball bearings are dirty and dry and won't flee the grooves once centrifugal force tries to clear them from the sprag but it doesn't.

My memory is not exact on the sprag clutch, but I think it is on the crankshaft, otherwise, the chain from starter sprocket to the crankshaft would be turning the whole time the engine is running. There is a bit of oil in that case, but not much, so the lackj could very well make it squeaky.

My dad had the exact same bike - CL 350 Scrambler - when I was a baby. He was hit by a woman pulling out of a driveway without looking and got pretty broken up. Mom said no more motorcycle or no more family. He didn't ride again til I was 23 yrs old. Just wish I had that ole bike back!

@@Sleeperdude I'm pretty sure the old gas tank coating was zinc chromate primer. Popularly used to seal-off the rust in old VW gas tanks and such back in the day. Before having to get a new tank.

In 1970 I purchased a 1968 CL 350 Honda. I was 15 years old. They are famous for wearing the timing chain out , rockers arms and cams from over reving and getting to hot or not enough oil. That's where all the valve noise is coming from I was tearing these motorcycles apart when I was 15 And16 years old and rebuilding them.

Thank you for the amazing video and great tuning tips. My uncle passed away 30 years ago riding one when a vehicle crossed into his lane. I truly miss him. Today though I was given a 74 CL350 and most of a 70 CL450. Tomorrow I begin my restoration of them to hopefully creat a tribute bike for him that I can ride or even just have in the garage to admire. ❤

Great job make the old girl run the noise is the starter shaft and bearings need grease or oil, have to pull the starter out take it apart to oil the bearings same issue I had when I had a Vespa scooter and putting oil in the bearings and clean the contact points starter will work a lot better 👍👍

Typical old tech Honda from the 1960's-70's. Show 'em a little love and they fire right up! The coating in the gas tank was there because the metal was getting thin. That was the case with the tank on my 1967 305 Dream. The bottom of the tank was "sweating" gasoline through the thin sections. I finally had to scout around for another. This was in the late 1970's so I found one pretty readily at bike junkyard 50 miles distant. Brought it home and cleaned it out thoroughly, painted it and put it on the Dream. It was just fine.

I rode a twin to this bike when I was in high school. I loved every mile.

My brother bought a new 750 Honda in 71 when he got back home from Nam. He use to ride me to school on it thought it was the coolest bike in The world,he also bought a new 71 442 loaded with a 455 4 speed. Thanks for bringing back old memories!! Smart man. flip-flops and motorcycles just don't go together well. I know that they are one of your trade marks but it is better to wear shoes or better boots rather than lose some toes. Also you used a helmet and other safety gear to ride. And of course you had your Viennas and RC cola to keep your strength up for another ride. Happy trails!

I had a 1971 CL that I put over 20,000 miles on in the early to mid 1970s. I did a complete rebuild on it once. When I had it you could fill it for under a dollar and have enough change for a Coke. Those are the kinds of roads I rode on in New England.

My wife considers your channel as mechanic porno . She happy we don't have the room land to do any of it . I had one of those that toured Canada Maritime, New England , Mid Atlantic , Deep South states in 70s . Racked up 70000miles overall . Only time starting was issue when temps in 20s . Solid machine .

I owned a new 1972 CL-350 and a new1973 CL-350. The 1973 I paid $642 for. That’s right $642 brand new, The 1972 was trash, never ran right and used oil at a quart ever 900 miles. The 1973 was red and white and was perfect. 1000 RPM for each ten miles an hour and would turn 10,000 in high gear at exactly 100 MPH. Great bikes, adequate power and a ton of fun scrambling through the woods and sawmill roads and mountains in Central North Carolina. Thanks for the ride along.

This was my second bike as a kid. My first was a Honda CL125s vin# 1123158 stolen before I got my first ride but my Cb 350's and my CL 350's were my main means of transportation for years! $50. a year for insurance back in 1971! Great 👍 content! 🇺🇸

There are pretty cool old bikes, kind of like a over sized mini bike that is heavy. I also had a 750 which was fun from this time period. I think it was just paint inside the tank, most coatings are not rough and and lumpy. Your little man is starting to like working on these things, these are the days you will remember most. I rise my RC cola to you sir!

I bought A 1970 SL 100 IN 1977? And loved it ! Honda made some pretty cool bikes in the 70s ! Awesome you got her back up and running

I had a 1965 CL77 305 Scrambler in High School. It was an awesome bike and I had many adventures with it. It also was helpful in elevating my status with the ladies.

Sometimes people put epoxy coatings in their old tanks to cover up pin holes and nasty areas. That's a cool ride you've got there! Those scrambler pipes look in pretty good shape!

I just fixed the tank on a 71 Triumph that had at least 50 pin holes in the tank. I bondoed the outside, put 3 tank coatings on the inside and it doesn't leak a drop.

Love your mechanical knowledge on anything you tackle reminds me of my younger days and I’m 67 now.

I had a friend who was stationed at Luke AFB in 1978. I flew to Arizona, purchased this very same bike from him and rode it 790 miles through the desert in February back to where I was stationed at Beale AFB in Northern California. The speed limit was 55 MPH because of gas shortages at the time and I cruised at 55 by huge Saguaro cactus and froze my buttocks off going over the grape vine north of LA. It was the best motorcycle trip of my life.

You guys' videos make my day. City life is full of hustle and bustle, so its a challenge to appreciate the simpler things. Nice to see such a thing is still possible. BTW, the threads at the top of some of some spark plugs because some spark plug wires get attached with a nut in a few applications. Really appreciate the awesome content!
