700HP Turbo Ford Lightning vs. Pink FlareSide | RadVentures
Why is the '90s Ford F-150 so iconic? Ryan Symancek takes two of these great trucks-a classic Flareside and a turbocharged Lightning-on an adventure to find out.
As the ninth generation gets more sought after, examples of 1990’s F-150’s are getting harder and harder to come by. Ryan purchased this pink 1992 Flareside for $1500, and he uses it daily to get work done.
Having grown up in rural Pennsylvania, a beat up old F-150 is a familiar sight for Ryan. However, this Flareside is more than just a work truck. The flared bed and pink paint give it a sporty vibe, that other rusty examples don’t. Don’t be fooled though, this is a trim package. It’s all stock.
Ford made another truck with SVT in the mid-90’s that is a true sport truck, and it’s called the SVT Lightning. After getting his chores done, Ryan heads to Monticello Motor Club to see the finest example of a Ford SVT Lightning the world has ever seen. It also just so happens to be recently turbocharged and producing 700HP! It’s gonna be a good track day!

This is the best KZread car series... I seriously have watched about a billion hours of car content this year.... and joy here is so amazing...
Back in 94 I had a red one, it was a lot of fun and it's one of the few vehicles I wish I never got rid of. At the time I was commuting 70+ miles a day and 10-12 MPG was just killing me.
as a lifelong blue oval guy, this video was amazing... what a wishlist truck the gen. Lightning is.... esp. that particular truck
Hands down my favourite series, Ryan does a fantastic job and tells a great story.

I had a ‘95 xl. i6, 2xd, 5m. I bought it with 200k on it, with a stripped out oil plug that had been jb welded in. I put another 100k dailying it 50m a day over a steep 1,500’ mountain range nick named blood alley. I could outpace most sports cars just because I knew every bump and elevation change like the back of my hand. I changed the oil filter 2x until It got to the point that I just wanted to kill it so I could have an excuse to buy a new truck. I gave up when the odometer hit 300k and gave it to my uncle. He’s still driving it around town and on his ranch. That gen F150 was so dependable, light, torquey and communicative at its limit. Definitely the best vehicle I’ve ever owned hands down.

I had basically this same experience with my 93 Bronco growing up. Barely serviced it, ran it hard and fast... rolled it once. Still ran like a champ. What awesome years for these trucks.
My first truck was an 89 F150 2wd, I've had 4 rangers 88-94 all 2wd 4cyl 5spd , and currently have a 95 F150 2wd, an 01 F250 V10, and still have the 88 Ranger. I love old Ford trucks.

My 87 4WD Ranger was one of my favorites. It was light blue when I got it, single cab with the 7 foot bed. It was in pretty bad shape, but damn would I love a clean one of those now.

@@RyanSymancek I inherited my 88, it only had 25k on it but it was never washed so the body is pretty rusty. It had the original Firestone tires on it still 😆 its Tan with the bottom half Dark Brown.
Not gonna lie, maybe one of the greatest pieces of content ever created. Maybe because i have always driven Ford trucks. Maybe it's because I am 46 and my mind still wanders back to those better times. Maybe it's because I have been enamored with the first Generation Lightning ever since I first saw that red one at Jannell Ford in Hanover in '95 (we all used to stop by and look at it until the sales guys told us to leave). I don't know and I don't care. Job WELL done!!!

Thanks Seth! I have also always loved the 9th Gen F-150s, since before I could remember. This was my first time seeing a first gen Lightning up close, and they look insanely cool in person. When it showed up on the trailer we were all floored by how flashy and sorted it was. This one, of course, is extra special.

The 1st gen Lightning also had the 4.10 gear ratio. Thats the perfect1st gen Lightning, Only thing I'd change would be delete the racing stripes and put 20in 2001 style Lightning wheels on it. I'd like to see a 1st gen Lightning with a Flare side bed!

I’ve loved the lightning forever. This is an incredible example and I’m stunned at the cool factor. I’m in love for sure.
As an owner of a '91 GMC Syclone, I have to say this is one awesome truck!
I have the same flareside just an extended cab. She doesnt go anywhere fast but she always starts up when asked
I normally can’t stand most car videos on KZread but these hagerty videos are great. Laid back, not flashy, extremely well done, non-cringey hosts, cars driven how/where they should be. It’s something you can watch on a Sunday morning and not feel A.D.D. whiplash
As a lover of the OBS generation trucks, this is amazing I have a pair of 1997 f250HD trucks one with a 460 (my grandpas from new) and a 7.3 with a zf5. Great video!
You guys seriously have to do more features like this, awesome production, awesome host, it inspires me more to keep loving my classics!
When I was in high school in 1992 I got a regular cab long bed 1989 F-150 XLT Lariat 4x4 with the 4.9 liter straight six and 5 speed manual. It had the dual gas tanks and I loved it. I could go over 500 miles before refueling and back then gas was less than a dollar. Nobody cared about fuel economy really. Great truck. Wish I had kept it.
By far one of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time.
Totally rad video. Love the 90s stuff. Keep'em coming
I wanna hit up drive thrus with this guy in the Flare Side. I was never a truck guy, but everyone I knew in rural Florida panhandle had a pickup. Nostalgia off the charts. lol.

Great episode. My 1st truck was an 83 f 150. My 2nd truck was an 01 SVT Lightning. I miss them both after seeing this.
Love this video! And gotta love my 92-96 f150s too lol. These trucks are definitely becoming timeless classics.
Here's the best thing about your work, Ryan: Clarkson and Hammond would approve. You DROVE that FlareSide until she quit. May would be puzzled as to why you drove an F150 around the track, but as an American, I know the reason...we blow stuff up. That's what we do. Kudos, amigo.

I bought a new ‘95 Lightning January 1996. It was white. Bought the twisted wedge heads, cam etc but couldn’t get the aftermarket Mass air to work right so sold truck, bought ‘96 Ranger installed 5.0 with TFS heads then added a supercharger. Did like the Lightning tho.

Great video. I also have a 1992 F150 Flareside. Except mine is white with the 4.9 liter 6 cylinder and 5 speed manual. Mine also has about half the mileage that yours does and I only have the single tank. With the single tank the range isn't great; I have to fill up by 200 miles or so. You say you have low oil pressure. That could be because of the gauge; they are notoriously inaccurate.
@RyanSymancek
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah after all the abuse we put it through, I have a feeling that the gauge is somewhat inaccurate. We never did put a proper tester on it to see what it was reading. But also, pressure still is probably terrible, considering all the leaking and burning of oil. I'm sure bearing tolerances are crap too! It'd be good for a rebuild or someone who actually wants to the the time to make it nice. Frame and body are actually really solid for it being a New England truck! The I6 5spd sounds perfect though! What great trucks!
This is the best video I’ve seen in a long time I watched the whole thing 🤘

Making me nostalgic for my high school truck which was a 91 Supercab 5.0L 2wd. Slow old turd, but it was pretty imaculate and well kept (previous owner was an old man, then my uncle).
That was entertainment, those trucks were full of character !!
Somebody needs to build an 87-91 F150 lightning, like it would’ve come from the factory, something that Ford should’ve built
Incredible content Hagerty!!
Another great one! Keep them coming.
If I were driving the lightning following the pink monster I would really be worried about the parts falling off and hitting my truck

Season Two of Hagerty's shows, with all new episodes from Cammisa, will debut at the end of the month. Until then, Jason's taking a little break, but he'll have one more video this season. More to come!
i owned and street raced a 94 lightning in the late 90s early 2000s on Telegraph rd in Detroit. with no cats, dynomax race magnums, and a chip, that thing smoked any chevy or dodge pickup out back then, the 454ss and the dodge indy 5.9 pace trucks. i could put a school bus on either one especially the chevy. this white truck is badass man! i probably would just go with white and no stripes or graphics other than the factory lightning stickers, shelby stripes are cool on shelbys.
I wouldn't mind seeing a Flareside done up like that white F150.
That's was such good viewing filmed so well I cauld watch this stuff all day everyday need more
I love the 92-96 f150 single cab short bed 😈👌🏼
So cool, great video 🤘
As a past owner of a stock 2000 L and a built 3.4L whipple charged 2001 L this was a cool vid.
Why isn't this channel the best in the world... Amazing 🔥🔥🔥🔥
That was fun. Nice film.
those 9th Generation F150s are still cool as hell to this day. Long Live.
What's interesting is that Hagerty shows all these cool, older, modded cars and yet they won't cover them. I got a quote for my '91 Syclone and they asked me to remove the carbon dioxide bottle out of the bed that I used to spray on the intercooler even though it wasn't nitrous and didn't spray in the motor. I removed it, took pictures, and sent them in. I never heard back from them and I called twice to follow up. They just decided not to cover me and didn't even give me the courtesy of saying no to me. So, I called Grundy and they took me right away and for half the price.
This is my new favorite show!!!
I'm a GM guy..but that is a sweet truck. Good job to the builder Travis, and thanks for the great content Ryan.

Maybe it isn't stock ring gap? They might be talking 700 estimated crank also...who knows the windsors are pretty stout...use good fuel and don't worry about spark knock.
Great video, as nice as his truck is, I was reminded why I don't like flare/stepside trucks. Looks like Ford ran out of F150 beds, tossed on a ranger bed, and used dually flares.
Here's the numbers of the lightnings myself I own a 95 red lightning Production totals for the first generation are: 5,276 in 1993, 4,007 in 1994, and 2,280 in 1995. The color breakdown is as follows: 2,691 black and 2,585 red trucks in 1993; 1,382 black, 1,165 red and 1,460 white trucks in 1994; and in 1995, Ford built 824 black trucks, 695 in red and 761 in white. Total production for first-generation Lightnings was 11,563,

They were rated 240 horse 340 torque stock but they dyno around 220-225 to the tire bone stock through an auto trans and the stock 410 gears so it was def making alot more than 240 idk bout 290 tho lol. The windsors are pretty stout having a turbo on one is a good idea that is sick.
I love the truck I would ditch the stripes black the windows out and tint all the lights....and I woulda went t56 over a tko 600 but its still really badass that it is manual swapped.
