    I drive for a local fuel distributor, I currently drive a 2017 International LT DayCab. My last truck was a 2010 Maxxturd with the 12.4 Liter Maxxturd Diesel Engine. The 2017 that I drive now has a Cummins 15 liter, it is a great truck, this engine is pretty loud, but overall it very nice, then low end torque is especially impressive. I have begged, threatened to quit, threatened to quit and take half there driver with me, cussed until I ran out of cuss words..............all to try to get them to buy me a Kenworth, a Freightliner, a Western Star.....anything but a damn Navistar, they refuse. I hate them for this, I am the senior driver, been there for 14 years, I make exceptional money, but I still might quit if someone would buy me anything other than a damn International. I once owned my own truck, and I would not hesitate to have KT rebuild my engine. Half of the problem that I have with my shit spreader is the fact that the International shop is over worked and poorly motivated. The other half of my problem is the tire shop that this dealership uses is COMPLETELY incompetent. I have taken my truck to the shop on two thursdays in a row, just trying to get them to balance my steer tires, my steer tires still have 0 weights on them.

Perhaps money out of his pocket initially, but in the end, he's built a better product, feels better about it and no doubt has gained some additional jobs because of it.

    You might "say" you're not mechanically inclined, but you are fascinated by this man's humble, but OCD approach to his quest for perfection. The more you watch, and the more you listen, the better you understand something that you thought was beyond your own percieved abilities. I'd bet that once you took on a project (not a 700hp engine rebuild, lol) you would figure it out and finish it perfectly. I'm a 73 year old retired industrial electrician (marine & oilfield) , and have had the pleasure of servicing enormous types of rotating equipment. But I've never worked a day in my life, because I'm at my best & happiest when I have tools in my hands. Now think of something that you'd like to fix, and go fix it. Well done in advance. Cheers.

    I recently read an article on FB regarding why most semi's have a six cylinder engine. I was stunned. I figured they were at least V-8 or more. It turns out the narrow block makes for easier maintenance and a sharper turning radius. They just build them with GENEROUS sized cylinders. And also, they can add a turbo if they need more grunt. My first full time job was working at Fairbanks Morse in Beloit, WI. They were building diesels for the navy that made 1,000 hp per cylinder. I was told it had two crankshafts, one on the bottom and one on the top. The pistons came together in the center and that was where the injectors were situated. I think there were four of them. Two on each side. I grew up two blocks away from where they tested engines. When us kids weren't making too much noise, we could here those big diesel engines chuffing away. The pistons in the one you were rebuilding have to be huge for it to be a 15 liter. Had to chuckle as you turned the crank you said, "I've got spinnage". Right away I had visions of Popeye helping you finish the assembly. Sorry, couldn't help it. I was born in 1946 so I grew up with Popeye. This was a great video, clear and educational. You do great work. Its a shame auto makers don't build their engines to accept liners. That would greatly extend the usable life of the engine but then they wouldn't sell as many cars. And too, the engines of today really do last a long time. Most of my friends have cars with 160,000 miles or more. They take them thousands of miles on vacation with no worries. The joke about the breaker bar, vs torque wrench was a good one. Let me see, a six foot bar times my 180 pounds should come to about 410 foot pounds. With a lot of practice a man can get really good at feeling torque. I worked at an auto assembly plant as a trouble shooter when something went wrong. If an inspector found a problem I had to buzz over there with a crash cart and fix whatever. Bolt didn't go flush in the trans? I would back it out and run a tap in then blow out debris, install new bolt and save it. Wrong transmission? I had to remove the trans when engine got to a middle area and put the correct one on. The engine and trans were on a pedestal before stuffing into car so I could do that before insertion. I got a feel for the tension such that I challenged a coworker to come behind and check the torque I applied with my 32 inch ratchet. On twelve bolts I was within specs, plus or minus five pounds. Some were 15mm some were 18mm. So I had be accurate with the two different torques. That was 22 years ago before I retired, I doubt I'm still that accurate. I'm out of practice, now use a clicker wrench on everything just to be safe. I have a nifty diesel in my 2005 Jeep Liberty. Four cylinders, 16 valves, a turbo, intercooler, and it uses a really powerful lift pump to create 20,000 psi on the fuel. That is fed through a common rail to each cylinder, the injectors are operated electronically by a minicomputer. The intent is for the fuel to enter the cylinder as a very fine spray, almost a fog. The computer can adjust the instant the injector opens to get maximum power or minimum fuel usage. Supposedly, it only has 162 HP but can create 300 lbs of torque at 2,000 rpm. Not bad for a 2.8 liter four cylinder. It now has 262,000 trouble free miles. If I'm easy on the go pedal it can get 30 mpg on a calm day. if it's windy from ANY direction other than behind, it takes a hit down to 25 I suppose due to turbulance. One time pushing through deep snow in all wheel drive for about 200 miles it only got 15 mpg. I noticed that fuel gauge dropping at about twice the normal rate. I pulled a bottle gas truck out of a snow bank one time. He could not believe it. But there was a bare spot on the blacktop, with all of my tow straps hooked together, I was able to get one tire on the bare blacktop. I was told the transfer case creates a three times reduction so I'm guessing it was putting about 800-850 lbs of torque to the wheels. Diesel power has such great promise, lots of torque, long life and it can be operated on numerous types of fuel. There is a video on YT of a guy who makes diesel fuel from alga in a big greenhouse. It burns clean, NO POLLUTION because it's vegetable oil. He is the CEO of Valcent industries. I haven't been able to get any of his alga fuel but my little diesel sure likes the biodiesel I get in Monroe, WI. It varies from 5% all the way up to 20% depending on their production. The biodiesel does a good job of lubricating the pump and other parts. It feels slippery if I get some on my hands. It runs quieter on the biodiesel as well. That is a real issue since they removed the sulfur. Not sure how sulfur lubricated the parts but at least the biodiesel can take up the slack. Thanks for showing us what a REAL workhorse diesel looks like. That was an awesome video.

    @patrick11169

    depends on whitch way its outta spec, if the clearance is too small, bore the bearings, with em installed, until their to size. if too large, bore gauge and figure out if you have a out of round, order oversize bearings and bore to size.
