7 WORST paragliding landings of my career - WINS & FAILS

Фильм және анимация

My TOP 7 worst (documented) paragliding landings. Some turned out fine, once I broke my hand landing in difficult terrain. Lack of experience is showing. Today I would definitely do it differently. Fly fun and safe!

Just curious but every time you fly, do you always have to have someone with you on the ground to pick you up when you land? I'd so that means you can only fly if someone else is available. One more thing, have you ever injured yourself paragliding?

I love you man and I am pumped when I'm thinking about this flying and I'm learning how to fly a epsilon 9 I'm already 65 years old I'm poor and it was all the money I had to buy the epsilon 9 and the lessons. They tow me up into the air a couple thousand feet, in a great big giant flat place with a few trees but not very many. I'm old and fat and crippled and I'm flying kind of heavy on the Wing. I told the instructor there was no way I was ever going to choose to land where those guys land with all those cars around there and stuff to hit. I want to land in the great big giant flat place with nothing around. I thought I could just weight shift and fly in a great big circle about a hundred yards across. I have a board seat harness and I wanted to unbuckle the chest so I can lean Way Forward and block a bunch of are and create a bunch of drag. Most of all fly around with my weight shifted in a big circle like that until I get done around 50 ft2. Fly at trim speed. Then I will do my approach with my hands up mostly and focus on keeping the roll axis level as it flies down to the ground. When I'm one foot from the ground with my wing nice and level and point it into the wind pretty much hanging down nice and stable I'm going to slam on the brakes as hard and as fast as I can so it doesn't have a chance to get too far out of control. If I'm leaning Way Forward and I'm biting into my mouthpiece at trim speed I just have to take my medicine and do the parachute landing fall. Does that sound like it would work?

She caught some sinking air and landed on a tree. I kept looking for her 3 hours with that broken hand. Her cell phone battery died - just a message that she is on a tree went through. She managed to climb down, get to the village, find a phone and called me. In the meantime I called for help and helicopter was on the way. When I learned she is safely down I tried to call them off and pursue another emergencies. But they said they were on the way and asked if I was all right. I said I my hand was broken, but that I could get to the village by myself. Nevertheless, they asked me to wait. In the meantime I packed my glider with one hand and using teeth to zip everything. Helicopter came and roped down a medic on their second attempt. She greeted me and asked where the hell have I landed? I just nodded and agreed that the place was exquisite for landing of any kind. She harnessed me and helicopter flew us both out of there. Every time I fly over that place I look down and take a deep breath ;)

Wow. What to say. Well, thanks for sharing firstly, but there's definitely a lot of learning points from these 7 landings. The main takeaway I would hope you've learnt, is to always have a good landing option in reach - in many of the clips, you already F*ked up by putting yourself in a position without a good landing option at all. And, it seems you do it in a 'lacksidasical' way - meaning, like carelessly. Many good pilots would be sweating profusely with some of those landing options, and you just don't seem to care at all. Also, even though in some of the clips you manage to land well, you seem in some clips to have poor positional awareness - for example the very first clip - it's obvious you don't have much/enough height to start doing manuevers, and from the 2nd angle its amazing how good the glide actually is to get you close to the edge, otherwise you were totally screwed. What about pre-flight checks? Many of the clips your speed bar is not connected either on one side or both. Again, that might say that you are a bit careless with your approach to flying. Like one of the other comments said - "Interesting how everybody cheers up bad decisions here.If we would have such pilots here, many launch sites would have been closed already…" and if you continue making such poor choices you will have worse than just a broken wrist. 2nd clip, you did well for the space (Just the left side speed system not connected) 3rd clip - ( This is the worst for me. It just doesn't make ANY sense at all. You have a HUGE place to land just in front and to your left to begin with, and you chose to try to thread it in behind the hotel. WHY?! Nobody in their right mind would chose there to land, especially not considering the MASSIVE snow-covered field that you fly past. Halfway through the clip you put a text saying "not so sure" - hmm don't you think you should check out your landing option, BEFORE you are too low to change plan??! I mean, that is basic. Did you not learn that in school? Have you never learnt that at any point? It's giving me a twitchy eye just trying to figure it out. (Speed bar also not connected) 4th clip - you put yourself in that position - poor choice really, it was never a valid Plan B to begin with but you manage to stick it in ok 5th clip - Just needed the base leg turns to be a bit closer/over the hotel building and the landing option would have been fine. (Speed bar also not connected - noticing a trend?) 6th - I don't really know how you would end up with that as your only landing option in the first place, so its a bit hard to understand. It also looks like just before you hit the tree, that you let go of the brakes and start trying to pull the A's? to pull Big Ears maybe? Have you ever learnt butterfly flapping? A little bit of it could maybe have helped in this and a few other of the landings. At least the speed bar was connected in this one. 7th - Your friend goes missing - and you don't know where she is - Did you have any radio comms? Is it worth injuring yourself to try and find her? That being said, it was a little bit unfortunate the roughness of the terrain, with the chopped trees etc, but looking at the other clips, I think you were well overdue breaking something Anyways thanks for sharing, I learnt some things from the videos, hope you did too

Hi Oatey, many thanks for watching (so closely) and taking time to comment in depth. Most of the time you are right, sometimes there are reasons that are not obvious from the video: my hike and fly harness doesn't have a brummel hooks - speed system connects via knots so it look unhooked (but one time in cocoon harness you were right ;) , the big lakes are conservatory, it's forbidden to even walk on them, if we weren't shooting a video (not this one) I would have landed elsewhere. And sometimes camera lies in angles and distances... Anyway: flapping would definitely help in some cases and I don't use it enough - that's something to work on (yes I was reaching for big years). Some of it was inexperience, some going further than abilities at the time, some circumstances to avoid - but I did learn from these, mostly leaving bigger safety margin... Happy landings to you!

@@martinsulek1139 Oatey cares about you bro! And yeah fair point about the speed system, hard to tell from the video. Re: the lakes in front of the hotel in the 3rd clip.. If you had 2 choices, and the 1st choice was landing where you did but breaking your leg, hitting the car for example or the street lamp, or landing on the lake, which is forbidden, but you are un-injured - which would you choose? Happy and safe landings to you too 😊
