    Wishes and Ifs. This 2011 team could have won a National Championship if let Russell Wilson be the focal point of the offense and not M Ball. I remember he’d only get to throw on 3rd and Long. Oh well Alvarez got to cash 4 checks that year: 3 of which he priced and signed.

    By far the most versatile QB(arguably the best QB) Wisconsin has ever had. I've been saying this for years now, they really need to recruit more Dual threat QBs. Success leaves clues.

  • @frenchfrey65

    @frenchfrey65

    3 жыл бұрын

    They don't necessarily need to recruit Dual Threats, just BETTER QB's! Prior to Graham Mertz, the last 4* QB the Badgers recruited? Bart Houston, and he lasted a half a season before being benched for Hornibrook (3*). Badgers are more or less known for preferring 3* guys, walk-ons, and transfers instead of even trying to get a 4* guy or better. Jon Budmayer (our QB coach) was another 4* guy, but injuries prevented him from competing. Now we have Mertz (4* grade 86, highest grade QB we ever got), and they're not even trying to get him to start asap because of Coan (3*). It's frustrating, it's that kind of lack of risk taking that's holding the Badgers back.

    @@frenchfrey65 My point is, if you look at the Era that CFB is in, majority of teams that make the playoff or Win the playoff have a QB that is a dual threat or is fairly athletic when he needs to be. Badgers recruiters don't prefer 3* QBs or transfer, they just know that committing resources to 4-5* QBs typically wouldn't convert regardless because of the brand of FB at Wisco(Run heavy). Coach Chryst is heading in the right direction, you can tell the play book is changing - it was a lot more balanced and made the pass game a much bigger part of the offense a season ago. He is working to adapt to the current CFB environment which is a lot more than we've seen from former HCs who were ok with going to a NY6 Bowl game and calling the season a success. Chryst is setting Wisco up for long term success right now, look at the Classes he's bringing in. I want to see Mertz on the field just as much as any other Badger Fan but I don't mind allowing him to develop his mind and body for another season. CFP appearance in the next 3-4 Years, mark my words.

  • @frenchfrey65

    @@jusanothacritik3116 Oh yeah I've been watching closely at our recruiting classes, even though we still don't get 5* guys, the Badgers are making recruiting look SUPER easy! Out of 19 OL, only 4 are not from WI, and the furthest away is Tippeman from IN, when we had Gary Anderson as HC, he got Micah Kapoi from Hawaii!? Chryst is putting WI back on the map by recruiting instate and I love it! Our TE's, FB's, OL? Almost all from WI. Just need to start recruiting more front 7 guys from WI. And unpopular opinion, not for talent reasons, but we should switch to 4-3 instead of 3-4 defense, in terms of resources we can't continue to play 3-4. I'd explain more but this is getting long to begin with! On Wisconsin!

    I remember watching this game with my dad (a Wisconsin grad of the 70's) and he just had the biggest smile watching Wilson play. Wisconsin would be so dangerous today if they had QB's with even 70% of his talent and a burner on the outside. Always have a good o-line that can give protection, gives a little time for the speedster to move downfield, opens up TE's in the middle, and if nothing else a QB who isn't part elm tree to tuck it and run.

    So much has happened & changed since this has happened: 1) Bret Bielema is the current head coach at Illinois 2) Luke Fickell (interim HC at Ohio State in 2011) is the current head coach at Wisconsin And this was still a thing: 1) Jim Leonhard (Badgers DC) was still a player in the NFL 2) Paul Chryst was still the OC at Wisconsin The list goes on, however a decade plus later, and things already look so different.
