I'm glad that there are a lot of options for Americans to move to the Netherlands! I really like that last option. It is definitely the easiest, but of course it does not come with the perks of living there full time. I'm not sure if I would move to the Netherlands, but it would be fun to live there for a month or two!

I would really like to the Netherlands from the US because of so many things that are going on here that I can’t handle anymore. The biggest reason is that I’m a 64 year old visually impaired man, and the United States is not set up for people who are blind and visually impaired. It just isn’t, and I have trouble coping with it anymore. I want to be in a place that I can walk to everything I need, I can bike to everything I need, and I can use the transit services to everything I need. All without fear of being hit by a car, shot, or any number of other things that go on in this country. Is it possible for somebody like myself to be able to move there permanently? To put it in blunt terms, the US is so incredibly hostile to the blind and visually impaired, it isn’t even funny.

I think it depends on your specific situation. They allow themselves 3 months to do the application, but if it's a slower time of the year, it might be faster. Unfortunately, I know someone that it took longer than that. For me as family of EU, I was allowed to work while the application was in process. The IND has a chat on their website now. I will refer you there to ask about your situation. Always best to get the info directly! Good luck! Edit to say that I was already in the country when I applied and I don't have any experience about doing this before moving.

My specific situation as an American applying as family of an EU citizen in 2014 was that I set a meeting with immigration before my 90 days expired. At that time, they gave a big sticker in my passport so I could stay for 6 months while it was being processed. It took about 4 months. I am only ever comfortable sharing my experience and not set expectations for others even when the situation is similar or the same as things can change over time. The innovative business is something else, that is open for entire world. DAFT is easier and only open for US citizens (or Dutch citizens who want to move to the US). If you want to open a café as in a pub, you have to invest some time in how that works. The licences for cafes are limited and mainly owned by breweries, it is kind of complicated as breweries have all kind of weird rules, but that is only if you want to go for a place that is open late and mainly for drinking. A cafe that is more food oriented and closes early is totally different and much easier to start.

You can do the last option as a non-EU citizen of course. However, you absolutely can NOT work here in those three months. EU citizens have it easier to immigrate to the Netherlands. However, if you don't have a job after 3 months, the Dutch government will ask you to leave the country. (Unlike the UK government did when were a member of the EU.) I believe there are age restrictions for non-EU citizens. I don't think you can't come to retire here. But I am super sure about that.
