@@brandon8900 it all depends. It was warm today here in PA but we are just coming off of frosts so it can fluctuate anywhere probably from lower 40s to 60s

Also of note, keep the weather in mind. If you live in a dry area you'll likely have to water on a regular schedule, but if it rains often in your area then you run the risk of over-watering if you don't account for it.

Same ❤ just harvested 3 lbs of potatoes from 6 potatoes in 3 5 gallon buckets. Can't believe it 🎉 I'm glad he said cucumbers are always wilting, because mine are growing the cucumbers... but the leaves look sad. That's why I'm here. Am I over or under watering? Do they need food? Is it the darn heat?!? 😂😂😂 Just counting this as my learning year, and snacking.

I'm glad to hear you say "gardener's intuition." I've only really been growing anything for the past few years. Although, I've been thinking about it for a number of years that borders on ridiculous. A lot of what I find myself doing has felt like instinct. So, thanks for confirming that I'm not kidding myself! 😅

I always do the water wait water, first garden this year but after checking the soil and seeing how dry it was it made sense to let it soak in a bit.

We have clay-heavy soil, so we don’t even have a choice in the matter. If you don’t water-wait-water, all that precious water will not go into the ground but run off to who knows where. And since climate change brought us actual droughts that’s just a no-no.

Hearing you say that you've killed a million seedlings weirdly made me feel ready to start mine. I was recently told that I shouldn't be embarrassed by my black thumb because practice made perfect. I should have trusted them! I figured people were just born with this weird third sense that I cannot tap into.

Great information Kevin. Watering seems to be art, science and experience combined. I'm a container and food scape gardener in Zone 8a Central Arkansas. I find the daily walk-about in the garden helps me connect to my gardens needs. My philosophy is regular tending to your garden whether you do anything else or not. Happy Gardening.

I have a 9,000 gallon fish pond in my yard. I regularly use pond water on my gardens. I agree, don't waste the fish fertilizer.

Lets, get into it.

I honestly don't mind watering on the leaves, because if you think about it in nature a plant has leaves not just for capturing the sunlight, but the structure of a leaf is in a way that allows water to drip down to the drip zone, where the roots are of a plant. I still hit the roots for sure, but getting the leaves wet mimics what happens in nature and allows water to drip down from the leaves right where the plant actually needs it (after all it grew that way for a reason) we dont know where the roots are, but the plant does!

Not sure if it was mentioned. The best water is harvested rain water. If you must use tap water, leave it in barel few days to vaporize all chlorine. The water from deep well is not perfect too because of salts and low temperature which some plants dont like.

Most cities now use chloramines instead of chlorine. Unfortunately it's way more stable (which is why they use it - it remains in the water all through the distribution system) and doesn't off gas quickly like straight-up chlorine does.

The struggle is real with consistently water for me😮😊

In my experience I’ve learned to water anywhere from 5%-10% container size every time I water. Keeps from over watering and run off. I usually keep closer to 5% unless it’s starting to get really hot out or if the plants are starting to out grow the container and have big thirsty roots.

if you overwater, buy a moister prob that makes a huge difference.

I use a watering can during the time of potential freeze. During the warm months I run a hose from my kitchen sink, out the window, and to the garden. I rent my house and dont have an outdoor faucet so I do what I need to haha

Can you do a video about watering indoor seedlings? Whether to fertilize lightly with every watering, or to alternate plain water with fertilizing water (eg fish emulsion mix)? That kind of thing. We use self watering, wicking and buried terracotta systems. Very very hot and often dry area.

I went to walmart, cause my hose was leaking all over not just one pinhole but dozens, way to far, but it was ancient, my grandma bought it decades ago and it sat years before i started using it. I can tell you without a doubt, at least for me, since i use containers and don't really use the hose that often, except when i'm out of rainwater. I bought one of those "retractable" hoses, and i have never been more satisfied in my life. Like i said i don't use the hose that much, cause all hail the watering bucket, retractable hoses are fun, they just are, give them a shot if you don't need a giant hose.

Before you had you water storage, did you use filters for city water? What is the best thing to do for my garden water if rain water storage isnt an option yet?

Thanks for mentioning that. I'm new to gardening. I live in the northeast and never would have thought of that. I'll have to check that out here.

In my experience, overhead watering of roses is a sure fire way to getting black spot and powdery mildew. It really isn't a good idea to get the leaves wet, or allow water to splash from the soil onto the leaves. My favorite way to water is with a soaker hose fastened down with landscape staples under the mulch. Turn it on for however long, shut it off, easy peasy.

"How do you know when a plant actually needs water." I like Indicator plants my fav. being Brunnera. When it looks like it needs water that tells me that all the other plants I have need water. Since Brunnera isn't a native of North America I wouldn't mind a native alternative. Do you have a suggestion?

Also some plants you shouldn't water too late in the day because they might catch diseases that way when the low temperature hits. I've learned it this summer and turns out I've been hurting strawberries for years

I water before work! It’s calming to be out watering my seedlings and new plants during spring in my Epic Gardening Birdie’s bed, knowing I don’t have to break my disabled back to enjoy growing things. Wish I could get another Birdie bed, because they TROUNCE the competition beds, while the beds let them drain even in my marine coastal environment! 🌱 🪴 🍅 🫑 🥬

I have had such a hard time finding a smaller watering can for my indoor plants that isn't that one spout, which is too harsh for young plants. I did find one with a rainfall type spout.....and it leaks out the bottom of the spout. You'd think nice little watering cans for indoor use would be easier to find given how popular indoor plants have been lately, but nope.

What connector are you using on the hose at the 2:31 mark? That looks really convenient.

This is a dumb question but, how can you tell if the soil is wet? They always say to check by sticking a finger in there. For some reason though, I feel like my fingers cannot tell the difference between wet and dry soil unless the soil is, like, BONE dry and blowing in the wind.

When Kevin is demonstrating how to check for humidity (sticking the finger into the soil of the Yerba Buena pot), just the tip of his finger came out with some dirt. That is because humidity was that deep but no humidity on the upper layers.

Almost all plants uptake 90% of water from their roots including vines, so you should water the roots. Keeping leaves too wet can often lead to fungal infections like downy mildew. Hope it helps!

or like me with the watering of seedlings .. i tend to "love" them to death .. definitely over water, then i let them dry out too much .. uggggh .. trying to get the sprouting and then caring for the seedlings alone is going to be the hardest i am learning

💯 recommend a bosmere haws 24’’ brass watering lance! It is well worth the money! Trust me!

Can someone pray tell me what the name of the watering attachment Kevin demonstrated at 3:15? I need a link, pronto!

Does anyone have a tip for potted plants that start to solidify on top? (Also what causes this?) it happens to indoor and outdoor,mulched or not. For instance when I water one plant, it sits on top for much longer than the other pots, and when it finds it ways down one hole, all the water “drains” through that hole and reaches the bottom before it reaches the other half of the pot. I can feel in the smaller containers one half might still be dry. I have to physically tip pots at times or even poke my own holes in a circle around the plant. Raking the surface seems only a. temporary fix. Any tips to make this easier for myself?

I don't know for sure, but it sounds like you have a heavily peat mix. Peat can be hard to rehydrate once it fully dries so I'd encourage you to either try bottom watering and letting it soak in a dish for a while to give it more time, or water more frequently so the soil doesn't dry out as much. Some soils become hydrophobic if they dry out completely, and getting them to absorb water again is frustrating. I've found success with putting the whole pot in a container of water about half-way up for 15 minutes or so, then taking it out and letting it drain so the roots aren't sitting in water too long. You'll then need to water frequently in small amounts from the top for a while until the soil there starts wicking again. It can take a few days. It's not a bad idea to restart the soil life by adding a little dirt from a healthy garden bed or container.

Question, If you are on city water is it really necessary to let the chlorine evaporate before watering your plants with it?

In many cities, yes, especially if you can smell the chlorates straight from the tap. Chlorine destroys organic matter. Older plants are less susceptible, but I always dechlorinate for seed starting. I saw a significant increase in germination rates and reduction in damping off once I started doing it

My watering can is a dripper.. not in a good way. I have a use for 25 foot hoses.. as leaders for soaker hoses. feel free to send me any you don't want. I like them better than the drip irrigation systems for setting up and moving them.. less time bent over. ok.. I'm having wand jealousy.. I don't have one of those yet but I have a nozzle that does the shower thing. This year, I have a bunch of grow bags and I'm watering both the plants and the outside of the bags so they last a bit longer before the dirt turns to dust.

I'd like to drip irrigate my container garden, but I live in a 2nd floor apartment with no water sources, other than my watering can... Are there any drip irrigation systems for my situation?

Watering the leaves too much can cause fungus and downy mildew to take over
