Danish Winter Survival Tip #1: Prepare yourself
Take vitamin D to reduce seasonal depression, use hand cream and buy a good jacket and boots. We also recommend a wake-up light for an alarm to simulate sunrise as you wake up!
Danish Winter Survival Tip #2: Make your home into a nest
Lighten up your home in the darkest days of winter. Don’t be afraid to invest in your home to make it feel cozy, even if you are just renting a room. Candles, comfy blankets, a warm cup of coffee, and good music can make you feel happy even in the dead of winter!
Danish Winter Survival Tip #3: Stay active
As easy as it is to sit on the couch from Christmas to Easter, you still need to stay active!
Winter is a good time to stay fit by working out in a gym, swimming, or playing indoor sports like badminton. Less into athletic endeavors? Find indoor clubs like knitting or card games.
Danish Winter Survival Tip #4: Be a tourist in your own town
Explore museums, grab a book or sit in a new cafe - just get out of the house and check out a town or neighborhood you wouldn’t regularly go to. With tourists gone you can take your time in peace to explore museums or try a new restaurant.
Danish Winter Survival Tip #5: Outdoor time is important!
Bundle up and go for a walk, either through the city or out in nature. Danes claim cold air is good for the lungs and it helps break up the monotony of sitting at home and watching Netflix on the couch. It also makes that warm cup of coffee or tea all the better to warm up! You can even try winter bathing and jump into the sea!
Danish Winter Survival Tip #6: Escape Denmark!
Danes are some of the world’s most avid travelers, and winter is no exception. Many Danes will take a ski holiday, or look for some winter sun. There's no shame in getting away for a week, plus it gives you something to look forward to!
Danish Winter Survival Tip #7: Get Hygge
Making a hyggeligt night is how you survive Danish winter! A few friends, board games, candles, and some bottles of wine make for a perfect night. Take advantage of a slower period to hang with friends and family with fewer distractions while everyone is in town.
Final Thoughts
The key is also to remember that summer is just around the corner and Danish summers make the winter worth living through!
Keep a positive mindset that this is the time of year to recharge and self-care so you can be ready for the craziness of summer!

I agree: we have such traditions that help us approach seasons prepared. Look for Kaffe Fasset's books in the library for self-made (knitted and crocheted) inspiration against gloomy grey and brown. Winter pottering is different from summer pottering. Why not try to make a cushion or two, or a scarf, or a ski-cap. My hubby just knitted his first fisherman-style beanie. There are great shops for yarn in Copenhagen, but the yarn needs to be at least 75 % wool. Good luck!

I love Danish winters for all the reasons you mentioned...the cold, the dark, the wet and for the hygge that comes with it 😊 Made me smile, to see the progression of candles, blankets and dimmed lights....the only thing missing were some home-knitted socks (which are a big thing in the Scandi countries, too) Would love to spend an evening of wine and games w. you two! 🤣 hello from Hundested 🌸❄

I've watched every video like this and plan on watching them all over again a couple more times. I've lived abroad in Australia but it will definitely be a different beast in Denmark.

    1) You are *not* allowed to make right turns on red lights. 2) Every price tag you see in a store is all-inclusive... *Except* for beverages. There's a bottle/can deposit per item which is not listed on the sticker price. You get it back when you throw the bottle/can into the designated machine at any supermarket. You can see the deposit amount for each type of bottle/can on the plaque at the machine if you're in doubt (it maxes out at like 50 cents for a big bottle, so it's mostly a non-issue). 3) Building floor-count is "minus one" compared to in America. We have ground floor, *then* comes first floor (up), second floor, etc. Ground floor is marked 0 or "stueplan" in elevators. 4) Yields are not full stop. They are yields. But you are obliged by law to "creep up" at a pace that makes it clear that you actually intend to stop if required. Zooming up to a yield and slamming the break gets you a hefty ticket (and probably fists shaking and/or flipping of the bird). This applies to bicycles as well. 5) Stop signs are very uncommon. When you see a stop sign you should read it as: "I will not be able to see why this is not just a yield until I'm *at* the line!". Seriously. If you see a stop sign there is a nasty curve or blind spot ahead. 6) Because of 2) we do not tip in Denmark. The waiters get a decent wage. The fancier the place the better the wage. Though they tend to try for tips if you sound foreign... Which many Danes find distasteful. If you wouldn't tip the cashier in the supermarket you wouldn't tip a waiter! :P 7) The age of consent is 15. If you're over 20 yourself you promptly read that as "the age of consent is 18". Legally allowed and morally defensible are not the same thing, but it is understood that teenagers are gonna teenage no matter what the law says. It is also understood that adults should be adultier about it. 8) We do not have a concept of "legally drunk" vs "over the legal limit" in the *general* sense. As long as you're on foot, obeying all laws and not being a dickhead to anyone you can be as drunk as a sailor on shore leave. The alcohol limit for driving a car only legally extends to bicycles too, but the cops pretty much interpret is as "anything with wheels". So leave the skateboard or e-scooter at home if you go to the pub. 9) You do not have to put alcoholic beverages in a brown paper bag when drinking in public. Drinking in public is not associated with any kind of stigma. Like, at all. 10) Prostitution is perfectly legal for both client and service provider. Pimping is strictly prohibited. Street trix are generally drug addicts and have a pimp "for protection". Use a proper service instead. There is still some stigma in some parts of society when it comes to this topic. So don't tell your boss. 11) Don't use cash if you can avoid it. It holds up the line and they take even debit cards everywhere. 12) Get a bicycle ASAP. There are bike lanes everywhere in the cities and it is often faster in rush hour than motor traffic even if you just trot along at a composed pace. Helmets are considered good style but are not legally required (yet? - I think there's been talks about that again). 13) Take bluntness as a sign of confidence. If people are tiptoeing around you it's because they're afraid of how you might react. And this goes both ways: if you're gingerly dancing round the topic people think you're scared of their reactions. We're not too unlike the Aussies like this: You call people you like cunts but you say "the gentleman over there" about the tool you can't stand the sight of. 14) Personal space is a thing. The 'rona restrictions on distance didn't change things all *that* much for most people. It only annoyed those who hadn't gotten the cultural memo already. If you breath down someone's neck and they turn around and give you the "I'm Batman!"-stare you're standing too close... 15) The police is court and professional. They do not use a speaker to tell you to show you their hands or anything like that. If they pull you over, just roll down your window and stay in your seat. They will just walk up to you and state their business. Either your tail light is broken or they want you to blow in the alcohol thingiedingie. They all speak English. 16) Nearly everyone speaks English and will gladly translate instruction signs for you. 17) Standard beer strength is a wee bit higher in Denmark compared to the US. Unless you're 6'4" and full of muscles you can only have one beer and still drive. 18 year old little pretty high school girls can drink you under. I've seen this happen to a couple of big burly US Marines and it wasn't pretty. Consider yourself warned :P 18) Mike and Derek are generally spot on in their observations of Danish culture. It's really funny to hear them point out things we don't ever think about because to us these things are just "the fabric of reality". Don't hesitate to ask about specifics. I'm usually on youtube once a day and I'm a weird kind of all-knowledge nerd, so if I don't know I'll sure as hell find out quick enough since I can't stand not knowing once a question has been asked.

As a particularly sensory sensitive person (stressed by bright lights, garish colors, loud/clashing noise, and chaotic movement around me), Danish Winter is actually the better time of year for me; less sunshine means less color and light, the gray cold weather keeps people indoors and streets/shops less crowded and everything just gets quieter, smaller, and easier for me to deal with in the winter. Of course, I was born and raised in Denmark, so I'm pretty well adapted for it.

Long walks at the beach/in the forest are really nice in the winter in DK. My favorite memories of winter in DK is walking long walks with the family dog (newfoundland dog) at the west coast of Jylland in very windy weather and coming home to a warm house, putting on a movie + pyjamas + a blanket + hot cocoa. Oh and a nice tip for when you are cold or similar, tumbledry your duvet and voilá - a nice warm nest for hygge. My mom used to do this, back when I was a kid, when I had been out in the winter snow. It's such a great feeling.

Regarding the dry hands, it is actually more a matter of exposure to cold air and the temperature differences, that if causing your hands to dry out. Therefore the best cure, beside treating your hands to a lotion is using gloves while outside, especially for biking, ensuring you dry your hands well after handwash (and carefully with paper towels), and use perfume free lotion (since the perfume can itch the smalll cuts on your dry hands and make it worse)

I love the dark mornings 😊 I am not at all a morning person and it takes me a while to actually feel awake after I get up, but when it’s dark outside I can sit quietly, eat my breakfast and drink my tea, with a lighted candle on the table, and it’s ok to not be fully awake and active because it’s still “night” outside. Another great thing about dark mornings is that almost everyday you get to watch the beautiful sunrise and welcome the day 😊

Had a good laugh, when you pointed out the mispronunciation of 'hygge'. Americans pronounce it with the Danish sound for the vowel 'u' - 'hugge'. Here is a trick for Anglophones to learn the right way of pronouncing the 'y': Say the English word 'mean'! Then, focus on how your lip position changes if you say 'moon'. Now, keep your lips in that position - and say the word 'mean' again. No change in lips from when you said 'moon'. The sound coming out of your mouth is something like 'myyn' - and yes! THERE is the vowel 'y' in Danish - used for the word 'hygge'. Now, what is left for you is to remember the lip position every time you want to say the word!!! ;) (It helps thinking that the lips should be more pointed as if you were about to give a light kiss!)

It is fun to see what you think about our long dark evenings in the winter. Yes, it is hard to get up early in the mornings. As a Dane I can recommend long wool underwear between underwear and your jeans or shirts. It helps you to stay warm. Winter is the time of the year where you make all the things that you don’t make in the summertime. It can be things inside your house or apartment like organizing, cleaning or other things that you don’t do that much in the summertime. In the summertime you want to be outside as much as possible. It is very nice in the wintertime to sit with a book, a cup of hot chocolate and some candles around you.

Part of the reason why people do like living where they live, MORE (especially if the weather where they live is most inclement, much of the time) is because they have the where-with-all and means to get away from where they live, often enough to have their batteries re-charged. IF you live where it is cold, and you can go to Hawai'i, say, twice a year, then coming home will be all that much more welcomed.

The white walls things, that people may not understand is because it is very dark here in the winter, by painting walls white you exploit the light better. About the cold. It does drop below freezing from time to time, but most of the time the weather is around freezing in the winter, so you get a very humid cold, that is way different from the dryer colds in -7 celsius and below. Combined with the always windy weather here it does cool you down very fast. If staying outside for extended periods of time, wool is the way to go (it doesn't really gets cold when it becomes wet like cotton would). We do use the new years resolution method to stay in shape in the winter, which is why fitness and gyms are filled in January.

Since you two phenomenal trotter and pioneers live in Copenhagen, my sincere wish is that you'd help making Copenhagen a hub for train-travel in Europe, criss-cross. It is more climate-friendly than flying. Take a train to the south and try out for example Freiburg and Basel. If you start with an afternoon trip you could go to Hamburg first and then take the night-train from there. Spring comes earlier around the Alps and the mornings are brighter even in the winter. Both Basel and Freiburg are interesting towns/cities, and the Alps are near, with bright snow, or great paths to walk. Food is great and the feeling is historically&culturally rich and cosmopolitan. I was very impressed by both. Put on your magic robes in the sleeper and you'll wake up 1000 km further south!
