7 Tips to Creating Magical Entryways That'll Blow Your Mind

These are great tips, but it’s difficult to visualize with the pictures of grander entryways. For modest homes, there are narrow entryways or you’re just falling into the living room or kitchen. I would love to see more practical photos instead of the “Architectural Digest” style homes.

Lisa please show the entry way of just a normal 3 bedroom, 1 lounge room home. Very few of us have the grand sweeping staircase, or double doors entry. Most of them have kids, dogs, there will be no calling cards announcing the arrival. We would maybe like to think that this would be great, but realistically!!!

These are lovely entry ways but many houses don't have grand entryways. How would you style a small entry or an entry for a split level home where you have a small landing pad with stairs going up and down. I would love the history you provide and the examples but I would love to see how to implement in many types of entries.

I lived in a house with split foyer design. Hated it. You open the front door and are immediately faced with either going up or down stairs. There was no room for even a tiny stool. No wall space for hooks.

When I lived in Monterey years ago, I had exactly this type of home. When you opened the door, you hit a wall and the stairs ran up/left and then down/left. You always saw this little bare landing. I placed a rich looking narrow chest of drawers there and a fabulous table lamp with a mirror behind it. Would keep a gorgeous vase with either stargazer lillies or branches etc. Because of the lamp and lighting, everyone who saw the little landing or came in seemed so fascinated by the little display. No space for a bench tho-- guess you could tuck it under just a console...

I live in a bungalow - the front door opens directly into the living room! I've done my best to hang coat hooks and have places for shoes, but it's a small room and a small house so there's a lot of non-entryway things going on there too (TV, piano, toys...) I can't think where I'd put a mirror and I DEFINITELY don't have room for a little table or plants! I guess the upside is that you're already in the middle of the house when you walk in, so it's only a few steps to the dining room table and if we have flowers on that table they are in clear view when you walk in the door.

My daughter has a small, thin console table immediately to the right of her entry door. They use it for keys , mail etc ( random lego, or dinosaur may make an appearance) to the left of the door she has a small tasteful bench where they remove their shoes, above the bench are hooks on the wall to hold outerwear, hats and in today’s world face masks. There is a basket at the far end of the bench where shoes are kept. It looks stylish and functions for their family of 4, with 2 young boys ( ages 5 & 2 ) I hope this helps!

I love that you don't edit out your errors! It shows you're human and can laugh at yourself. You never fail to bring a smile to my face. You know, a grand entryway is the first way a visitor gets to meet you and your style. Everything in our home means to much to us. My own style veers toward grays, marble, some black/white, a sedate and restful palette with small shots of color here and there. My hubby is all about warm wood, tans/browns (I call them various shades of dirt). He is far too opinionated when it comes to furnishings, I'm used to men saying, "Go ahead, get what you want". Not him! Having some decor ideas that appeal to both cool- and warm-toned lovers would help a great deal. It took us quite a while to find some great rugs that include both grays and tans that didn't break the bank! We liked it so much we have an 8x10 in the living room, a 5x7 in the entry and one in the reading nook and a pair of matching runners in front of the sliders, oh and one more outside the sliders to act as an entry mat. Your style tips are perfect and never fail to make me imagine something bigger, better and, sometimes, more colorful!!

Related to that for me would be: How to create the sense of an entryway in a small house, where the door simply opens directly into the small living room. I need to come up with something that serves the ‘entry hall’ purposes (place for keys/mail/purse/bag/remove coat in winter) until I’m ready to proceed into the rest of the house. I moved from a house of over 2000 sq. ft. with an attached garage that led into a mud room, into a tiny 820 sq. ft house with street parking near the front door. (Unwanted divorce...stupid...but here I am...) I’ve played around a little, but...it’s just barely working. Help? Edit: I should have clarified that I’m now in a small, Midwestern village RENTAL. 😆 So I can’t count on the landlord being down for me to ask for/put in a can light...chandelier would be out of place...God forbid, the Boob Light.... You just open the door and there you are in the corner of a 10’ x 15’ room, looking at two love seats, and a chair and a half (plus end tables and lamps of course). Oh and farmhouse kitsch...😂 Just no. This is a rooster-free zone. Anyone feel challenged yet??

Thanks for the video, Lisa! Here is how my entranceway is hopeless and essentially breaks all your rules. 1. The architecture is putting up a good fight! You enter my door, and you are on a tiny platform in a passageway (facing an emergency egress door to my landlords’ suite … a door they don’t use). 90-degree turn to the left to go up the stairs, then 90-degree turn to the right, and then you open the door and you’re in the corner of my kitchen. Putting anything anywhere there would cause people to trip! 2. The passageway is pretty narrow so there isn’t really anywhere to put anything that won’t get hit by opening doors or fall down the stairs. 3. Flooring. Thankfully there’s a patch of hardwood floor at the bottom of the stairs. Unfortunately the stairs are carpeted and are magnets for all the debris that settles on the aforementioned floor patch. 4. There are no windows in the passageway so it’s super dim. I’d replace the bulbs except that they’re special motion sensor lights with weird bulbs (at least the motion sensor is practical when I’m coming home at night!). 5. There are a few coat hooks in the passageway on the top of the stairs for people’s “muttons and miffens”, but that’s pretty much all I can muster. 6. I don’t have a mirror yet, but that’s one of your suggestions that’s actually possible! 7. My landlord painted the passageway forest green … does that count as greenery? I do love this place I’m in, though it does have its quirks. Maybe I’ll have more of a say when I live in my own house things will be different! Thanks again! Love to all!

I really appreciate the historical references to the development of the entry way. A little foot note to add is that Frank Lloyd Wright utilized a cozy low ceiling entry way that would make the impact of going into the main open living space all the more dramatic. PS I must be doing something right because I've incorporated all 7 of your rules. Keep up the good work.

It took me five years to come up with a look for my entryway. Lots of things have transpired over those years. I lost my mom, and had thoughts of scrapping the makeover to move away from near where she lived. I had huge sums embezzled from me. And I've taken on other distractions. But finally, the inspiration has come. An atrium vibe, with pops of black window frames & a black bird cage against white walls. And since the hall is narrow, only a wallpaper mural on the wall will do. It's going to be magnificent!

Yay! After (in fact, WHILE) watching your ideas I decided to do something about my entry and Was lucky to instantly find a beautiful wooden second-hand sideboard for a few quid! I fetched it and threw out my ugly large old leftover "nowhere else to put it" lowboard. When my kids came home from school they actually gasped at the transformation of the entry hall! It looks so beautiful - the difference the right piece of furniture in the right place can make is amazing! Also, the hall seems bigger. I love it! Thank you for being such an inspiration!

I’m so happy I’ve hit all the marks in this video . I really struggled with my terra cotta colored tile in my entry UNTIL I changed my mind set and embraced the architecture like you mentioned. I was able to bring warm neutrals in like I wanted and threw in a couple of cool colored entry doors for a pop of color. It all came together when I quit obsessing about the floor color and just accepted and followed the flow. Love your channel and so pleased that I found you! ❤️

Great advice! I am inspired to define an entry area in my home. I, unfortunately, do not have a grand, separate entryway, but I think I can make an area in end of my long living room. Maybe define it with a small round table and a couple of vertical plants? And, I think if I place a large, single piece of art on the wall it will make it feel bigger than it is. And lighting! In my newly sectioned off 'entryway', maybe a chandelier of some sort. I'm so excited! I am sure there will be some trial and error, but it can't be less defined or less functional than it is now. Thanks for the tips!

With all the other projects I have going, that's the best I can do to expand the space a little. Plus, once summer hit, lining up a really solid, reasonably priced contractor to do back yard work has been like pulling teeth, so I've focused on other things.

@@katarinawikholm5873 Yes, I had to move my outdoor furniture off my back deck, and down into my basement for the winter. Knowing that task would be coming, I intentionally bought relatively light weight pieces, so the task was easy, and didn't take long. The outdoor umbrella I bought today could be more of a challenge to get down there, since it is so tall, so it may have to spend the winter under my covered back deck. Always good to measure before buying, but I needed the umbrella, and got a good deal on it.

I love the history lesson on entryways! There are many homes without them, but I refuse to buy a house that doesn’t have one - I call it the introvert space where we introverts can collect our thoughts before joining whatever is going on inside. I’m dealing with an awkward entryway now. It’s large enough to welcome multiple people, but it doesn’t have deep corners for seating or a coat tree. I may try a narrow table and a mirror - just to give the area more utility and some personality. Thanks for the info!

I live in a traditional culture and my husband is always busy in his office and his staff constantly need to come to the house to see him. I'm making our foyer huge, with plenty of seating. As always, thanks for the inspiration. It is good to know the rules, check my elements against them. I dream of Michael Taylor entryways. I'm working with a windowless, narrow Edwardian era entry (12" wider than the rest of the hallway). There is oak flooring; a green/butter trellis runner, pale "butter" walls; a large, rustic basket tucked under a dark wood demi lune; a tall, beveled mirror with scallops and pediment and a crystal table lamp to bounce light. It all looks best when there is a full (crystal) vase of flowers on the table.

My kitchen is the room entered into on the other side of the doorway. The main part of my narrow kitchen (galley) is on the Immediate left & a pantry & a separate broom closet door are on the right. I really love your videos. I hate sad entryways. Spaces you don't spend a lot of time in (stairways, entryways, powder rooms hallways, etc.) are a great opportunity to do something super, super bold. You can do a hallway in neon pink, because you only ever spend a minute or so in it. I hate when people say, "Oh, it's small, so I'll just paint it white." No. Those spaces are an excellent place to go hog wild and really express yourself. They're also inexpensive to do since they're small. You can splash out on materials that are too expensive to use elsewhere. Bright yellow Scalamandre zebras might be too expensive, too bold, and too busy for your whole living room. Totally an excellent choice for your entryway.

We have a floor to ceiling mirror, as ladies like to check with a last glimpse, a Rimadesio side board with marble top "misused" as a shoe storage, a Catellani & Smith lamp and a Lepli ottoman from Poltrona Frau to sit for the shoe change. Marble, silver and a pale green palette. A thing that is very important for me and the first thing people notice is the scent. It has to smell nice when entering your home.

Kept everything else toned down or quietly matching the statement and left it at that. Lisa, I loved this video, it will help me so much when designing my new entryway in Belgium (mid-century house). It's very narrow (90cm) and...rounded!, with a window to the living room (on rounded wall). This rounded wall is also in my living room...IMPOSSIBLE to design! I would love to see what you'd do with the space! Love from Antwerp ❤

I don't have a grand entryway in my apartment but I did grow up with one back home. Comple with black and white marble tiles and French doors leading to the living room. My current 3 bedroom is very large for today's standards. I can't complain. There's a small entry way with enough space for a rug and mirror and there's a nook for a shoe rack and brolly bucket which I have! The floor is tyled in neutral slate green for that area.

Thank you Lisa for giving the guidelines. Grand spaces with big budgets are fun. Everything is new or perfectly refurbished in beautiful colors. How do you create a lovely space with what you have? Or as you downsize. Regardless of budget or personal style. That’s what is most helpful and interesting. More examples of that would be great.

Thank you, Lisa! I’m a big fan of form and function; things must work as well as being beautiful! There are so many cool ideas here, and I loved the history lesson and the editing. Really fun! I’m still on the fence about the whole taking your shoes off custom. I find it very uncomfortable to walk around without some sort of footwear, and I want my guests to be comfortable. I mean, would you take off your heels if you were going to a dinner party? Or, if it was winter and you were wearing galoshes, would you bring your indoor shoes? I’ve just moved into a beautiful two bedroom apartment with a generous closet in the entry. Really looking forward to making it shine. So, I ask you, again...where to put those wet galoshes..? P.S. I vote for a September start to the Design Club. Fall always seems like a perfect time to go back to school. Really looking forward to it. 🥰

Hi. Ikea, for one, has a shoe tray for drippy/dirty shoes. I have mine tucked under my pie safe in the entryway. I'm from a culture [island] where people don't wear outdoor shoes in the house. Most people have a basket of various-sized house slippers for guests to wear in their home.

Hi Lisa. I'm with you on all your comments. Your examples of stunning room styles takes me back to cable tv shows. I have a Cape. I would love you to come to my home to get your advice on wall paint and lighting. I also need advice on where to move my up and down staircases that are in two different locations, ideas about adding a garage and a back deck, and install a new chimney and fireplace. The staircase and front entry plans are my only major problem. As is. I have displays of small collections to keep my home interesting, but the layout is not very practical. Where the front and back door are creates a diagonal pathway which I found frustrating where to place my furniture for a nice look. I want to finish my 7 layers of decorating, but I hold back until I fix the layout. I loved your comments on entryways. I have a spacious vestibule that is all white, with vinyl oak flooring to match my real red oak floors inside. I have a good floor to ceiling mirror on one side and then hanging space on the other. There's even enough room for a small chair, and a pedestal table suitable to have a vase flowers on top. I wish you could offering Zoom call appointments. Do you follow the 20/80 rule on merging decorating styles?I do, with either accessories or furnishings Thank you.

OK, because of you, I got a little table from Wayfair to go in the corner of my (very cramped) entryway. It will hold a small plant and someone's keys or small purse or something. Prior to that, all I had in the entryway was a (3/4 length) mirror on the wall opposite the closet and a carpet in front of the door.

I would say September. Not only does it seem a bit odd to start by having it once then skipping a week, but also because September is full of new beginnings (I’m a teacher so that’s probably why I think that). I’ve been known to have a New Year’s Eve party on August 31st! Plus, it gives you more time to get more issues ready.
