7 things I learned after doing my first Ironman 70.3

Спорт

I participated in an Ironman 70.3 on Mallorca - my first Ironman! And after the race I wrote down a few things I learned that could be useful for others out there considering doing their first Ironman. Cause there's a lot to think about!
1. Arrive at least 4-5 days before race day - especially if you’re going to a different country. If the event is local, don't worry about this one, but do arrive to the event in good time!
2. Memorize all the rules for the race. This is especially important for the bike leg, not only to prevent being disqualified, but it makes the triathlon safer for everyone.
3. Be realistic with your swimming pace and put yourself in the correct group and you’ll have an easier time in the water.
4. Have a bottle of water and a small towel ready in T1 after your swim. Use the water to wash away the saltwater from your mouth and face and get a small drink in before getting on your bike.
5. Don’t depend too much on the aid stations. Have your own nutrition and drink with you.
6. Don’t forget to fuel! You wanna fuel in small doses, but often.
7. Don't skip your brick sessions in training. Doing brick sessions are the key to surviving an Ironman if you ask me.
If you got any other advice worth sharing, please write them below! I still got a lot to learn as well, so I appreciate all the help I can get.

dont do you first ironman in salt water if you are not used to rough open water swimming (Train open water as much as possible, although I swim 4km every day, open water in neoprene is still always "frightening" for me). Train eating&drinking as much nutrition as possible on the bike. Run three times a week, minimum one long run (>1h30). Get used to looonnnngggg training session, not so much HIIT. (Relax, have fun and enjoy the show)

Thanks a lot for the tips ! How often did you do long run sessions (>1h15) during your 70.3 prep ?

I do a long run once a week - with a slow increase in km (2-3 km) every week.

Great tips! I'm starting my prep for my first 70.3 this October. Did you go with a personal coach or did you leverage a general training plan for your first Ironman? I'm kind of stuck between the two, mainly for cost reasons.

Awesome! I got a coach, which I highly recommend. You should be fine following a general training plan, but you will unlock a lot more potential with a triathlon coach.

What was your regular brick distance for half iron training

I would do a short run (5-10 km) after a long bike ride (2hrs) once a week. Just to get a feeling of what it's like to run on tired legs.

Hi Ian! My traning started about 6 months before the Ironman. I started with small and quick sessions and slowly increased the volume as the Ironman was getting closer.
