Another trick is to just use the same paint you got on the pallete for details. If you got 3-4 different colours, you can just mix those for detail bits that aren't important.

Holy crap. Dry-brushing a neutral gradient before just adding in colors from contrast paints is one of the most ridiculously brilliant things I've seen. It's honestly a straight-up lifehack for those pressed for time. Like me. T_T

The advice on simplifying the color scheme was game-changing. I painted a small squad of Dark Reapers a long time ago and I used a lot of colors. I painted another squad last year using half the colors, got a better-looking result, and it took less time to finish, even with paying more attention to smooth transitions. Your videos have been extremely helpful!

My suggestions for speedpainting projects: 1.) Give yourself a solid deadline. Whether this is an upcoming tournament, or just the end of a week you took off work to paint, having a deadline helps with the motivation. 2.) Treat it like a job. I generally take time off my real job to do my speedpaints, because I want to be able to sit down for 4-5 hours a day and just paint without serious interruption. 3.) Blog your work. Either to a forum or discord server, being able to show your daily progress off is good motivation. 4.) Don't just test COLORS, test PAINTS. The order in which you put down colors can make a massive difference in speed and you don't want to be fighting paint transparency.

I started really leaning into stippling when I want to paint something really quickly as I can blend armor colors/highlights faster than I can switch colors in my airbrush. For space marines (loyal and traitor) it also gives a nice texture to the armor that can be accentuated at the highlighting step. (as always 1-2 layers of highlights only in places that are important and use reductive techniques like streaking grime or dirty down rust/verdigris to do the rest)

At the 4:00 you mention oil wash and not having a faster method to do that. Tamiya Panel Liner is a classic tool in the Gunpla World and it comes with a super convenient brush. I'll be trying it on some painted minis soon, but it should work just fine on a coated mini.

45 marines to such a high standard in 6 months seems realistic. I sometimes get demotivated when I see videos where people somehow paint a whole army in 24hrs. It’s just not a realistic goal for most of us. So thank you for sharing that! Batch painting small amounts is so much more fun as you can see progress and enjoy painting more.

Tamiya panel liners are amazing for quick and easy, eh, panel lining. Or recess shading. It smells horrible and has at least 4 different labels that explains how bad it is for you, the environment, for you again, and that it burns real good, so maybe use a mask or gloves when using it. But it sure works and gives great results for n00bs like me. But I guess it does a similar panel lining job as oil washes, but here I don't have to mix myself :)

I like a nice separation of elements on all miniatures, not just space marines, but with SM you can definitely go a bit thicker and quite dark. If you recess shade everything with black on a skin, it's gonna look cartoonishly dark

Ok, so, here's everything I've learned from an ADHD level of commitment of the past 2 years in the hobby (only ADHDers can understand): Slapchop is someones random drybrush/contrast combo. If you're happy with basic TT ready, (to the creators credit) Slapchop is fantastic, and TTready+... but only just. For anything more, there is 1 skill, and 1 skill only, that you need to MASTER (obviously multiple skills are useful, but this 1 skill should be mastered): glazing. For those that don't know, glazing is ultra thin layering. Glazing is typically the final technique used to tie everything together in every single community flogged technique. Used independently, it will provide blends and transitions of Golden Demon standard+. At the obvious penalty of time investment. But any other half decent paint technique relies on glazing to achieve quality results. And honestly, once are competent in glazing, you will realise it's potential.
