In this interview training video, interview tips expert Richard McMunn guides you through his top 7 scrum master interview questions and high scoring answers.
WHAT DOES A SCRUM MASTER DO?
The role of a scrum master is to lead and facilitate a team using AGILE principles and processes to achieve the product creation goals and objectives. Their purpose is to hold daily scrum meetings to ask questions that focus the team on completing the agreed scrum principles and project timelines and specifications.
The scrum master job role is one that requires a unique set of skills, qualities and attributes and the employer or hiring manager will need to tailor the job to their own needs ad requirements.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A SCRUM MASTER INTERVIEW?
Richard's advice, as per the information contained within this video, is to prepare for the following interview questions.
LIST OF 20 SCRUM MASTER INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
Q1. Tell me about yourself and why you want to work in this role as our Scrum Master?
Q2. Why should we hire you as our Scrum Master?
Q3. In your opinion, what is a successful Scrum Master?
Q4. Tell us about an issue you had with a stakeholder and what you did to resolve it?
Q5. Tell me how you would facilitate a daily scrum meeting?

Q14. Why do you want to leave your current employment?
Q15. What’s your style of communication as a Scrum Master?
Q16. As our Scrum Master, how would you motivate a team?
Q17. You are the Scrum Master on a difficult project when it becomes clear a team member is underperforming. What would you do?

Thanks Richard. This would really help people out there who are good scrum masters but confused in the job market and not able to structure their answers in an appealing manner. This is brilliant. Also, I would like to say that it doesn't matter if its selling tactics or not, you are trying to help people in your own way. Most of us understand not everything comes for free. If they like you they should contribute generously but some would look for freebies. Just dont let those comments effect you negatively. Cheers!

Thanks for the amazing questions and answers to the Scrum Master Interview questions. Q6. How would you deal with discord or conflict in the team? The answer is amazing but the daily scrum meeting is not for discussing the root cause of conflicts because it is timeboxed (15v minutes maximum). The discussion should behold after the daily scrum meeting (separate meeting). Thanks again

There is only one sentence - at 4:18 - during this amazing video I do not suggest with 25 years of experience as a recruiter: canditates do not have to work EXTREMELY hard. "Just" work hard. Do what you have to do as a professional. If you work extremely hard, 24/12-16hrs - 24/7days you will get a burn out soon. I never wanted to hear anything like this, This is not honest.

Quite good advice on here, so thank you for taking the time. May I just point out to any new SM's out there that the Daily Stand-up is NEVER the place to have discussions about an issue of any kind. (10 mins into the video) Either a separate get together, away from your computers, or deal with it in a retrospective if its something you can resolve amongst yourselves. Also the link takes you to nothing other than something you have to purchase. :(

That's a good question! For Scrum Master, you should focus on what qualities you can bring that other might not have (you have a real passion to develop and prove yourself in the industry) and you should focus on some voluntary work to get experience. You could always sign up to a freelance website like UpWork and get experience there. I have also got some videos on no experience interview questions: 1. kzread.info/dash/bejne/paCZp7iOqKyshZc.html 2. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oG19mthyk9W3fco.html Please would you SUBSCRIBE to my channel? Sorry, but think you've misplaced the term "scrum master" in this video, when it should've been "project manager" - a lot of your answers, whilst they are very good, are delivered in a commanding sense, i.e. giving instructions on how people should conduct themselves. The nuance in the role of a scrum master, is how to take on a more servant-like attitude, where you ask others what they would like to achieve, and help *reveal* to them through their own discoveries what the best way forward is. The example answer you gave on how to resolve a problem is dripping in "project manager" speak. No scrum master would travel and essentially blackmail a company CEO into action. It seems you've come from a background where you lead teams of people through projects, hence your unconscious bias in the answers given. Don't get me wrong, I think the video is great and full of great information, but it misses the mark in terms of the role it's aimed at.

I believe the intention of this video is not just to help people that are already scrum masters, but are also becoming scrum masters. So, the responses have to be based on previous experience, which shouldn’t be from a servant-leader perspective because that’s not how you would handle things as a project manager. As for the stakeholder, I believe telling a CEO their lack of integrity will harm their business is more factual than blackmail. I believe employers want someone that gets the job done instead of blaming someone else for the failure. I’m just getting into scrum so I don’t know so much, but I appreciate his results-driven responses

I'm sorry but if someone came for the role of Scrum Master and gave me these answers, I wouldn't hire him/her. A lot of them are Project Management answers or answers you give to a manager who doesn't know Scrum. In a Scrum mature organisation you wouldn't stand a chance. If you want to remake this video with good answers, you can contact me. I'm happy to help you.

@@CareerVidz Thanks for the tip. That would be a challange for me because I'm not a great video maker. Because you already reach a lot of people the offer still stands, if you want to remake the video I'm willing to help with input from an experienced Scrum Master standpoint.

agreed, the answer provided are a bunch of bullshit that doesn't show what the candidate's prior experience is, what they did in their prior experience. Just a bunch of ass kissing. But then again, that's what you gotta do in order to land the first job. I'm not particularly good at it so I guess I'll study how to ass kiss better. Overall, this is a great video that teaches you how to land your first job.

Hi, As a Scrum Master I'd answer very differently to the daily scrum questions. The given answer sounds like the scrum master would do a lot in a daily scrum meeting, and he/she should be in the center. So this answer could be misleading as the devs aren't supposed to give a status report at the daily scrum. This is an event where they can synchronize their work and plan the rest of the day. Also, the daily scrum should be a short meeting with the and I wouldn't overload it with different topics as this habit could grow on the dev team and results in a loss of focus. So I wouldn't start to talk about internal issues there.

I suggest you go through the scrum guide and get the official timeboxs for the different srum ceremonies good luck.

"Open discussions during the daily scrum meetings"? I don't think so - that's exactly what leads to endless, unproductive meetings and is in direct violation of scrum principles. A statement such as this will guarantee you won't get a job at my company.
