    I myself am not opposed to pet ownership. But there is a definite fine line between domesticated and wild animals. The only middle ground I can see where having a wild animal live in close proximity to you being acceptable is if you're a trained professional, you have all the required permits and paperwork to have possession of that wild animal, and, this is most important, the intent of having a wild animal with you is rehabilitation (for previous injury or some other factors that make survival in the wild doibtful) to eventually be released back into the wild.

    @@stevenbjerke302That's probably because, of those rare exceptions -- the owners of those caracals actually know what they are doing and care for the animal carefully. Like having a big enough yard for them to frolic in, toys that give them a reason to "hunt", other animals they can interact and socialize with, etc. People need to understand that having an animal like this takes a lot of effort, education, patience and planning.

    Speaking of Caracals, what's the deal with that one named Pumba who seems to be all over the place? I don't care what anyone says, that cat is CLEARLY under stress CONSTANTLY. I know people say that hissing for Caracals isn't the same for other cats since they have a limited inventory of vocalizations to use for communication, and while that may be true, literally all info I could find confirms that hissing still always indicates negative emotions, even if it doesn't always indicate high aggression as with other cats. It makes me uncomfortable cuz like, wtf are they doing to that cat that's it's so distressed all the time?? and why does everyone act like its just normal??

    Caracals are very, VERY defensive and twitchy, and they hate being approached. They are powerful predators, but they are not apex predators, meaning they are always on the defensive in the wild to protect themselves from even larger predators. They're not a pet you can, well, pet. They are also large enough to cause grievous harm to humans. They aren't even tame, much less domesticated. Might as well bring a cougar into your house.

    Just learned about this cat from seeing videos of them being kept as pets. The first reason not to get one makes sense when I see how sleek and lean they look in the wild versus captive ones who look like chubby barrels. Wild animals are happiest in the wild so that's where they belong.

    How do you know that?? Have you spoken to a domesticated wild animal and they expressed their feelings to you? I think the real risk is they are wild and not easy in a house so they're at risk for being abandoned. But if people are capable, domesticated wild animals are far healthier and live much longer, and objectively most often look really happy. That being said, I'd never recommend on purpose getting a wild animal for a pet

Whether that be space, a part of their diet, a way to exercise, or it may be depressed. It could also be a medical condition but the last thing that a cat would be is obese, at least a caracal pumba. It would probably lack motivation, but hey, every individual animal is a little different. Just a good rule of thumb for wild animals in this scenario

    Moreover, from the videos I saw here on KZread, caracals always looked pissed anytime a human approaches them, hissing and showing other "annoyed cat" behaviour. They are surely beautiful creatures, but no idea why anyone in the right state of mind would like to keep such destructive and antisocial animals as pets. From what I saw, the only wild cats that seem to be generally very friendly towards humans are cheetas, but even they, while more tame than other feline cousins, need way too much space and physical activity to be happy living as pets.

    Well, cats have been domesticated for centuries. I did a quick search on the internet and the statistics about domestic cats attacking humans are not alarming. It doesn't happen very often and the cats with behavioral problems are usually not causing lethal harm. As for the caracals, they are way more aggressive than cats, they have the same survival instincts of a wild animal and their attacks on humans are more lethal. We must think of them as stronger and more massive wild cats.

    I think it's closer to a Huskey. TO be clear, Huskies are not far removed from Wolves, and I very specifically choose them, as they have some of the strongest prey drives among Domesticated dogs. They ALSO cannot be healthily kept inside a home. That particular breed of dog must be socialized, trained, and managed when outside of it's intended habitat, and only *slightly* less within it. I also think it's important to clarify that I do not think most people are properly equipped to care for a Caracal, but the pearl clutching when one is seen as a pet is a bit much. I agree with all of these, but I am curious if there is a difference depending on how many generations the cats have been in human contact. Caracals have a pretty long history of human cohabitation, the royalty of India used to use them for bird hunting (since they can jump high enough to actually catch birds out of the air). I just wondering if caracals descended from those who have been with people for 500 or so year are "better" behaved than ones that are only a generation away from wild (or actually from the wild).

  • @Elliot226
    @Elliot2265 ай бұрын

    Wow I've only seen a handful of people with caracals as pets and was already like "why are they as fat as my house cat?" but I had no idea how cheetah like they were in the wild (vs like say a leopard who is a thicker breed of large cat). Due to their paw size I had no idea how drastic the difference was, and it breaks my heart. And how often these cats are hissing (with ears back and full teeth engaged) they aren't happy. So few are content with their owners, and I assume they're doing more for them activity wise even if they are on the chunky side still. But just let them live in the wild or in a sanctuary. Hell, even a zoo would give them more space to roam than a house/apartment/condo. Stop buying them as pets. Fennec foxes also have big ears and are safer exotic pets that can't eat you/maul you. (Fennec fox protectors don't come for me, I'm just saying. I'm sure there are plenty of people who beg for us to stop making them pets too)

    people romanticize living out in the wild but it’s really a hard life for them in the few places they are if not a sanctuary with loss of habitat and many are starving and any that are for sale are bred to be sold and have never been wild and would not fare well in the wild

    These kind of people don't understand that wild animals can be bred and raised domestic. Its all about the owner and the level of animal training they are capable of. These type of people rather not see humans own wild animals cause its inhumane or not safe and watch them starve to death in the wild. Guess they never seen the dude that lived with a lion pride in the wild for like 3 years, literally was accepted by the pack and hunted with them and shit.

    I get the appeal of getting a big cat, and that is what certain breeds of large DOMESTICATED house cats are for. I watched this video of a caracal biting clean through a raw chicken drum stick and couldn't help but think of what a bite like that would do to the bones in our hands or wrists. Beautiful animals, I look forward to seeing videos of them in the wild, and maybe one day catching a glimpse of one myself out there.

    A caracal is not different than a domestic cat which is a direct descendant of the African Wildcat. But because of their size, they will be much more happy if they have protected outdoor areas ( fenced areas). All cats need crude protein and that means ideally, fresh internal organs. They need high places to perch and enough space for solutide. There are many homes that can provide these things sutuationally.
